***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

I don't think Verizon can FORCE an OEM to lock their phones down, but they DO reward OEMs for doing so... hence Motorola's preferred status.

I disagree. Verizon doesn't have to let any device on their network they don't see fit. They have 100% control over this. The question is does Big Red care? I think everyone is opening up to making phones available to the modding community with the expectations of limiting or voiding warranties.

Edit Addition: In regards to Motorola getting preference for locking their bootloaders, that also doesn't make sense to me. Motorola is the first vendor to release a device with an unlockable bootloader on the Verizon Network. If they are preferred, their preference could be linked in the quality and sales figures of their devices. Moto has had much better build quality over the other vendors. I own a HTC Incredible and it is an awesome phone but it feels cheap compared to the OG Droid. Moto has managed to have a solid handle on battery life compared to the the other manufacturers with HTC being the worst.

I've been stalking this forum for about a week now and wanted to thank Blue/Chief for all the useful info/links.

I'm still on an original iPhone (I was in line at 4 AM years ago), and am finally ready for an upgrade :). I'm grandfathered into AT&Ts unlimited, but am ready to jump ship to big red, mainly for their network & 4g LTE. I dont use enough data for that to matter.

I've been dead set on the Bionic since about May, but with all the delays, and rumors about the Vigor and Prime, plus the $300 pricetag, I think I'll stay month to month until one of those beasts hit the market. My drop dead upgrade day is probably black friday just like Blue, and I can't imagine all the big hitters won't have their phones in the stores by then.

So please, keep the news coming so I can just come here, instead of reading Google/News every morning for the latest updates :D

We'll do our best, Homefrrie, but I probably should get some work done, too. ;)

Welcome to the forums!

Welcome to the forums and WELCOME TO ANDROID Homefrrie! :D

Glad to have you as part of the conversation... and if YOU find anything, feel free to let us know about it. Together we'll travel this road all the way to launch date and then some.

Thanks guys, and Ill definitely post any links on useful info that I haven't seen posted already.

Obviously google is my friend, and I'll read up on rooting, but for a quick reply, is that basically the same as jailbreaking on Apple?

My iPhone has been jailbroken since it was first possible, and I've been spoiled with Cydia & the customization that comes w/ jailbreaking. From the limited articles i've read, rooting is basically the same.

I guess my other question is, for those who have seen/used Cydia, are the 3rd party apps as abundent on a rooted Droid as they are on jailbroken Apple phones? I have access to thousands of ringtones, wallpapers etc.. and am hoping for the same once I move to Droid.

Yes and Yes.

Rooting simply gives you access to the phone's "root" system files. You can delete bloatware, overclock the processor, or even install a whole new operating system (we refer to them as custom ROMs). I've been rooted and ROMmed since Dec 09 and have never looked back... but if the Prime comes out with ICS and stock vanilla, I'll likely not root simply because I won't have to.

Third Party apps are more than abundant for Android. Just MAKE SURE you have Lookout Mobile Security or some other malware detector on your phone before you start installing things! The last thing you want to do is have some bad code mess up your phone or spam all your contacts with nefarious messages.

EDIT: By mentioning "malware" I was referring to third party apps that aren't necessarily in the Google or Amazon Android Markets. There are several "warez" sites that offer paid apps for free... but remember, the only free cheese is in the mousetrap and those free things may be laced with malware. This is becoming a well-publicized issue in the Android world, and malware is virtually unheard of in the Apple kingdom. Don't be paranoid about it: just aware.

I'm not very familiar with iPhone's Cydia. I jailbroke my wife's iPhone 4 so that she could tether her iPad (which she rarely does) to it, but that's all I did.

On my OG Droid, I installed a very basic "Froyo" rom on it and deleted a bunch of bloatware. I also overclocked it and it runs really smooth.

I've never heard of anyone getting malicious apps, but I also haven't been in the OG Droid forum for a really long time. I'd take Chief's advice, definitely, but you shouldn't have to be petrified of getting any viruses.

Whenever I get an app, I always read the comments. That alone will save you a ton of headaches in case there is a virus floating around somewhere.

I agree with Chief. I won't have any reason to root immediately after purchase. I usually wait anyhow so that I can get a feel for the device as the manufacture designed it. When I switch to a ROM, I can better tell if it's a phone issue or a ROM issue.

The only reason I can think of for people to immediately root is for wifi tethering.

My guess is that the VZW exclusivity is for subsidized phones only - as a dev, you'll still be able to buy directly from Google as in the past.

There is no way that Google is gonna let that slip through their hands.

Mark my words.
What advantage would exist for Google selling a phone that can ONLY be used on the Verizon network?

Not seeing it.

Nothing indicates that the Prime won't be on other carriers eventually. Just like Honeycomb was "exclusive" on the Xoom, but now it's on others, including Samsung Galaxy Tab.

No one seriously believes that the Droid Prime will be the only ICS phone available over the long term. Probably just for a few weeks or months for an initial push against iOS 5.

So let me get this straight. The Droid Prime is going to Verizon and the Nexus Prime is for the other carriers? Is there going to be different versions of this phone? I been reading into these different rumors. I mean has all this been confirmed?

I haven't heard ANYTHING about the Nexus Prime going to any other carrier than Verizon. Droid Prime and Nexus Prime are the same device... but some sources are under the impression that Verizon will brand the phone.

The real debate is whether it will be released in Nov/Dec or bumped up to October to compete with iPhone 5. That's what we're all hoping for :)

Cydia = App Store for 3rd party developers. Chief pretty much answered it for me.

Cydia is an app that sits on the iphone desktop.. run that app, and you have about 40 sections of 'add ons'. Ringtones being one, wallpaper, icons, screensavers, games, GPS apps, communication apps, etc.. etc...

All of the apps that Cydia offers are also tested clean I believe before they're allowed to be downloaded, but I'll definitely stick to the original software that the Droid will come with (until a easy, safe, root is discovered, at which point i"ll root the shiz out of it :D)

And while the news is that the Droid Prime is what's been leaked since June, meaning the first device with ICS, the speculation is that there will be more "primes" on other carriers, most likely under different names, like what is happening with the SGSII on the other 3 carriers soon.

(Incidentally, I doubt the "Nexus Prime" was ever going to come out under that name, unless Google wants a lawsuit from Hasbro. The Real Nexus Prime)

Of course, nothing's been confirmed. Except that a phone that goes by the model SCH-i515 has gone through bluetooth certification.

Coupled with the fact that the same model number leaked in the BGR report yesterday, it appears that this will be the first ICS phone and that it will be on VZW.

This is all very confusing, but hopefully it will all be cleared up within the next 30 days.

Wait so if this phone does come out as Droid Prime on Verizon... does that mean it won't be a pure Google phone? (Thus no fast updates)?

+1!! :D

To me its between Vigor and Prime if it indeed comes in October. I dunno. It may all just come down to battery life at this point but I do know I can't go into Christmas time waiting on a new phone. My X is on its last leg and I HAVE to get my GF off the Sprint network...SERIOUSLY!

I'm in the same boat. Vigor or Prime. iPhone 5 is a possibility, but a distant third.

The only difference for me is, i think Black Friday is it.. there should be enough diesel phones out, along with deals for BF, that i'll def be picking one up that day if I haven't already.

Other than an actual release date, that's the biggest question. Google might have been able to dictate to Verizon that it's to be a pure Android vanilla phone with direct updates from Google.

OR

In exchange for the moniker DROID, which virtually guarantees that it will be well-known and well-bought against Apple's iPhone 5 (which is also rumored to drop in October), Google might have agreed to let Verizon bloat the crap out of the phone.

I don't necessarily see either development as a disappointment. Samsung phones have always been easily rooted. So whether it has to be rooted or not, I see the Prime getting fast updates as they come available.

Interesting. Isn't the HTC Vigor rumored to come out as the Droid Incredible HD though around October?
I hope they keep this pure Google. Nexus has a big selling factor to us phonenerds!!! :P

SGS2 on Sprint pictures, spec came out today. It has 4.52" screen. Seems like Sammy is pushing screen size up across the board.
So Prime will have 4.6" screen as reported before? I understand it needs a little larger space to have bottom software buttons on ICS, but 4.6" seems a bit too much for me unless bezel around it is tiny enough.
