I'm not sure what 'A6262' is in reference to, but what you need to find out is whether the phone is branded or not. If you go to Settings >> About Phone and tell us the Build Number from in there we can figure that out.

So long as the official update has been released for your hero (Orange branded phones don't have it yet, for example), then you should just recieve it like anyone else. The OTA update process works via the internet, not your network, so I would expect it will work fine even in America.

You're never going to get 2.2 on your hero without using a custom firmware.

EDIT: Looks like A6262 models are all unbranded, in which case you should've recieved a notification about the update already on your phone. Make sure your phone is set to check for updates (can be found in the settings), and set the date forward 2 weeks. That should make it check again.

Hello everyone,

I have never posted before but I have had this thread bookmarked and read it every week or so hoping for the update to be live on my Orange UK HTC Hero.

Well this morning I woke up and I can confirm that the update on Orange UK is live.

It downloaded the OTA update first, and is now downloading the full update over WIFI.

Just thought I would let everyone know, as this thread has been great.

Phone is fully updated, and with working sat nav, wooo.

It's a quite nice GUI overall.

software information reads:

firmware version: 2.1-update1

:D

I live in Australia but was sold a hero from South Africa no happy that I am still waiting for the 2.1 update when the Australia version is live, I contacted south African HTC they said there still making it witch is bull shit why HTC make each region recode Android to add scene

I'm in Australia, using an unlocked A6262 Hero purchased here. Still have not received notification of the OTA 2.1 upgrade (available in Australia 2-3 weeks ago).

I called HTC who said the phone had actually been imported from Malaysia (the OTA was released there a few weeks before Australia). They recommended I set the date forward and reboot. Of course I'd already done that many times with all combinations of a few weeks to a few years. (I've also tried with phone set to "auto firmware download", as well as "prompt before download") . Still, I tried again. No luck. They said my next option was to take it to an HTC Service Centre. That probably means being without the phone for a couple of weeks, so I'm reluctant.

Anybody have any other suggestions?

Folks,
I bought my Hero (GSM) in oct 2009 in India. It is unbranded / contract free / unlocked (what ever term is used. infact none of these smart phones come tied up with a carrier in india, pay full amount and buy one which is good ). It had a build# 2.73.720.5, baseband versio - 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18, Kernel version- 2.6.27-8dd6deeehtc-kernel@and18-2

Since Jan 2010 I have been travelling and currently in the UK, and would be in the UK till 2010 end.

I know for fact that Hero is getting FOTA upgrade in both India and the UK. Both started already in july itself.

When i first contacted HTC UK support, they took my phone serial no and said i will get an upgrade.

I waited for one in the UK. but after a long wait (yes it involved turning on wi fi every day in anticipation and anxiety), nothign seemed to happen and so contacted HTC UK support again. Now They said they were unsure and i need to contact HTC india support.

I contacted HTC India support, and they claim, I will get my upgrade in the UK if i do the following:

0. Backup phone
1. reset phone to factory settings
2. change date to , i think it was 9th july 2010 (need to check mail for this)
3. wait for update and they cliam i will surely will get one this way

I am a little bit sceptical to follow this unless i am sure as it involves restoring to factory setings.
Can any one please confirm if this has worked, or should i be the guinea pig :)

My girlfriend has bought a sim free htc hero, is it possible for 2.1 to be put on it, how do i go about it,
the build number is: 1.76.405.6 146733
kernal version is : 2.6.27
software version is: 1.0.0.a6288

hope this helps, thank you

Hi, ratdroid
I had the same idea, and the same reluctance to doing a factory reset. I guess one of us should be the guinea pig. Let's toss for it! I'll pick heads (assuming as a rat you'd like to keep tails?)... TOSS... oh... heads up... looks like I win :). Are you up for a reset?

gaff_l and all,

Good news.

I followed Indian HTC support advice and here i have brand new eclair on my hero. This is what I did, please go through:

1. Got sprite backup from market ($ 4.9) and backed up all of my mobile. This is optional. For me, all i was concerned were my contacts, and I had a back up of those already on my outlook express through HTC Sync. But for redundancy sake, I did the sprite back up as well.

2. Did a factory reset, with erase all data.

3. The moment, hero booted after factory reset, there it was- the notification for OTA. That was the notification for preparatory setup. This took hardly 5-10 minutes on a 5mbps wifi connection.

4. The moment preparatory download was done, there was notification for main android 2.1 update OTA. This now took 10 minutes for download and further 15 minutes for installation and bootup.

5. So after a total of say 25 minutes, I had eclair on my hero.

And There was no need to change the date to 9-june-2010, as suggested by indian support (probably because we are already in august, which is well beyond 9-june)

6. The only thing left was getting the contacts/appas back. I got my contacts back from outlook express via htc sync. SD card data was obviously intact. Hardly 5 minutes for setting up google single sign on.

2.1 is uber fast and awesome. Few things i would suggest are:

a. google gestures. can search almost everything - address boiok, music etc by gestures and no need to type.

b. google voice search. to my surprise, was amazingly accurate. i tried long strings with my indian accent and amazing accuracy of 90 percent atleast i would say.

c. google picture search.

d. dolphin browser. the browser itself has gesture support. which means drawing a b with your hand on broweser opens bbc webpage (you got to setup your gestures for this)

e. google maops with navigation.

Hi - just wanted to say that I'm another Orange hero and it updated fine this week - thanks for all the useful info here. As ever, everyone has been really knowledgeable and it's been an amazing help.

Well... thanks for doing the reset and posting your results here, ratdroid.
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me... factory reset, all data deleted and still no OTA! Looks like I'm going to have to resort to doing my first custom ROM to get 2.1.

Maybe you guys didn't notice but there was small OTA update (~5MB) for HTC Hero that brings back G-Sensor calibration tool and people on XDA say it contained some bugfixes.

New build number is 3.32.405.2:

The Market has been FUBAR for the past 72hrs. :(

Initiating a download and then restarting your handset sometimes allows the d/l to complete. It's not a 100% reliable solution but it has allowed me to update a couple of my "essentials". Another possible solution I've seen is that enabling Airplane Mode for a while and then switching it off kick-starts things.

Connect the phone to WiFi and set the date at lease one month forward. This "tricks" the phone to check for updates right away.

Tried this to no avail. Put the wifi on changed the date and nothing happened. Left it an hour or so with no success. Turned phone on and off and changed date but still nothing :S

Where do I go from here?

Here, to download a more recent version of the 1.5 firmware.... that version you're running is the original release one! Once you've updated to 2.73.405.66 the OTAs should make an appearance.

Hi,

I downloaded the software however when installing on my phone it starts installing then the phone is put into boot screen and the usb connection is lost and it comes up with error [171] usb connection error. I know the usb works fine though as sync works and i can transfer files onto memory card, any ideas on this?

it comes up with error [171] usb connection error

Try uninstalling HTC Sync, reboot the PC then reinstall it.
Ensure "USB debugging" is enabled on the handset.
The connection must be via USB 2.0; I advise using one of the backplane ports directly connected to the motherboard for reliability.
