Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Im not having a giggle at you i just posted what was in the "automated" email and quite a few people got similar emails stating end of april. Amazing how people react when there told they have to wait a lil longer, reminds me of my 4yr old kid.

Heh - other way around I think my friend. I've grown so tired of the weekly HTC release date leaks that I've resigned myself to it appearing in May/June - but nevermind eh/

Oh, and in that case I see why no reason that whoever/whatever you spoke to was simply wrong. There is plenty of evidence that random posts proclaiming HTC sourced release dates are wrong, and no evidence to date that they are right. Simple innit.

Hmm, if that's the case I think it may be time to consider rooting, either that or a pretty hefty petition to HTC to remember the 2009 phone of the year (as awarded by many websites and magazines) should NOT be forgotten....

A big part of getting the Hero over other phones was the software was supposed to be getting kept up to date, turns out that was BS. Such a shame that hTC have dragged their heals on this update issue, and it's worrying that either it's taken this long because it's been a harder job than they expected (which has me worried about whether it'll work right), or whether the delay has been a business decision, hoping people will get bored and buy another handset. Maybe I will, but I wouldn't bother buying another hTC if they're not going to support it with updates etc.

I can see it being July, with 2.2 out there, iPhone 4.0 on sale, and I'll finally get the upgrade I expected 6months earlier and it'll be buggy as hell and hardly worth it.

Android 2.1 upgrade delayed once more FOR Hero users! | T3 magazine

I'm hardly surprised by this... I got fed up with waiting and got rooted and rom'd anyway.

I guess there's the argument that we are 'lucky' to be considered for a free upgrade, but this has been whispered now for months and months. Now it looks like it quite possibly won't happen.

Surely HTC have greater priorities with 2.2 being developed now and Hero users are to be left behind (well behind).

I seriously feel let down by HTC this time.. I know they didnt promise anything but the April 26 email and April 30 for T-Mobile G2 seemed legit to me. This looks like a genuine delay in HTC's part. I feel very bad for those who cant send MMS bcuz theyre stuck with a faulty phone for another 2 months. As for the rest of us, we're missing out so many features i.e. Google Nav, Earth, Gesture, Goggles just to name a few. If we were at least updated to 1.6 last September, none of this would happen. :(

Latest news from Engadget say that Europe won't be getting the Android 2.1 update until June. This was apparently said by a Google Rep and was followed up with HTC. It is free, though and is said to be "early June".

:(

I think it's a shame and it puts a big black mark for Android against its biggest competitor (hello iPhone OS).

Hopefully Google will come good on their future plans to help limit this segregation that's appearing in Android devices.

I'm just so relieved I've now taken the plunge with a custom 2.1 ROM - I'm so happy with it, and there is now one less thing to annoy me. I'm now just about to go and play with Google navigation:):)

Well, if it's true that June is the new date for 2.1, I'm going to root very soon. I'll spend the next couple of days reading up and will aim for the weekend. All these recent threads about this rom and that rom being so good have got me itching again hehe.

And so I wonder... is the Telus HTC Hero considered a "European Variant"? or does the "first week in may" still hold for Canadian Heroes...

Yep i had enough too im gonna learn how to root and root it. once my contract runs out it will be cancelled and i wont get another android phone. I hate to say it but this is my first and last android, i also have an iphone and to be honest i never had any problems with it at all and i had sooooo many with this handset. the android would smash iphone all over the place if it just done what its suppose to and had access to all apps, after all thats what i got it for!

Can we believe that website though? If it is true I will either root the hero and go with the custom firmware option or get the HTC Desire :\

You do realize that probably most of the topics next year will be about the lack of update to the HTC increedible and HTC evo 4g, don't you?

Mate - don't blame Android, blame HTC.
