Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Been as though there would be the HERO, LEGEND and DESIRE for HTC using the Android OS and the last two have just come out (where HTC want to sell more of ) then it sounds like they are going to keep these two latest phones with a better OS than the HERO to keep their sales up. So only when the new 2.2 OS comes out then the HERO will be updated with 2.1 OS. Just a thought because this has gone on for a very long time and they seem to come up with many excuses.
 
Just about to complete flashing of Villain 5.3 (with full live backgrounds).

Will update once its finished. :D
 
Live backgrounds seem to put alot of strain on the cpu. I'm not hugely fussed about it tbh. Again it could possibly be something that can be optimised. I don't know so don't quote me ;)
Speed doesn't seem to have been hit with this new update, when not using the live backgrounds ;) Jus making that clear. lol
 
I got the same standard email reply, but to be fair to HTC this is the first time I've actually heard something approaching an official date.

We Hero owners are getting 2.1 but as ever it's a waiting game.

If we will get sth. in june, that will be the preparation update. There is no date for the official update, so... christmas? anyone? :D

I could not wait anymore. rooted and installed a custom Rom.

Brilliant i have to say.
 
HTC are a business - they will be making money through new product launches and not long-term ongoing updates of existing hardware. Sad but true, but I don't think we'll see an official update to 2.1 for long time, possibly at all. There will be another delay in June, I'm sure of it.

Still, I've also taken the plunge and rooted my Hero. I'm now using Villain 5.3 and I think it's fantastic.
 
I would have thought that if HTC get to see this villain 5.3 Rom they will throw their hands in the air and give up. :)
 
what's this villian rom? What does rooting your hero mean? I've got a hero 1.5 so I'm guessing you guys have customised your phone to 2.1... but how did you do it?

Is it 'safe'?

Rhys.. looks like were gonna have to root it and install a custom rom..i have tried learning how to do it but you might have a better grasp at understanding the process. :p you jailbroke your iphone so im sure you could figure this out...the only thing i would be worried about is a rooted phone stable? also i would love to save apps to the SD card is this possible?

T-Mobile UK seem to think the 2.1 update is coming "shortly".
