[OFFICIAL] LG G3 Updates/Speculation Thread

In response to nickdalzell:
Dude you need to chill. People everywhere are reporting buggy builds and devices that are undesirable after updating. You sure you want that? You want a phone that is less functional than the one you currently have just to get what...different aesthetics? Wow...

I's funny to read that some are mad because they want to update, while I wait to install it to be sure it's bug free. I got the update to LP notification a week ago and it is not even tempting to install it. Just wait and you will also receive the update, with probably a lot of fixes. That way you will enjoy it a lot more ;)

I'd rather get it while it is current than a year later realizing people are playing with the next version. I got a flagship but the rate of updates leaves me feeling behind a ton. I despise flat design which is why I want LP as fast as possible. But I'm also so sick of the tons enjoying it while I sit with ZERO confirmation that my variant is even getting updated. Why not wait until everyone can use it and then release it? HTC does that. What good is paying $700 for a device and being stuck on the OS it came out of box with?

If I can get the 3D polish sooner rather than later why not? I've hated flat UI ever since iOS 7 was released.

By the time my device gets the update, people will be posting screenshots of Android M&M. Wasn't being late to the game a part of the Apple life?

LG doesn't do soak tests that I know of. Sites would mention it if they did. I'm not even sure my model will ever get off 4.4.2. And as it stands, compared to the leaked screencaps and those posting here bragging about it, my device UI is puke.

Myself, I usually hold off on updates, until I'm assured that it's all working satisfactorily and reliably, and there are no adverse changes made to it, e.g. Tapatalk 4.10....NO thanks! Nick you mentioned about an app breaking in another thread, Mafon, which stopped working with Kitkat, and hasn't been updated since. I think it's a good reason not to update, especially when my favourite apps stop working. I've got an educational game now, I use frequently for warmers in my classes, it doesn't work with ART and Lollipop, and hasn't been updated yet.

LOL dude come on. You keep trying to tell us how many people are "enjoying" L but I've heard nothing but bugs about it. Until it's stable and usable without defects, what good is it? You want it for aesthetics. I get it. But I really think you'll be sorry. It's kind of a hurry up and wait situation. You hurry to get it, then wait for it to be usable. Have fun.

I'd rather have it before it is a year out of date. I see zero mention of the VS985 in any of the update news. If I want to keep this thing it needs the update. Otherwise I'll sell it.

I can assure you that I will seriously avoid LG, Samsung and any OEM who has something against the USA in the future. Id at least appreciate having the choice to update. Not consistently supporting all owners of the G3 is indeed bad business. Paying $700 and having the one variant with literally zero support should make anyone upset.

Get an Oppo or a Vivo, they don't discriminate against the US, Except for China, they discriminate against the whole world for updates....LOL

<Another verse of the same song>
It's not the USA, it's VZW isn't it, with their unique and customized "VS985" G3. AFAIK no other carrier has that particular variant, even China Telecom doesn't have that one, who are also CDMA/EV-DO.

If it were Verizon why isn't any USA variant updated yet? And how is it that HTC is getting the M8 updated much faster than the LG G3 here? It has nothing to do with the carrier

Whatever the excuse I won't buy any more handsets in the future unless they give every country support at the same time. I'm sick and tired of this crap where other countries get the option to upgrade and the USA gets it a year out of date or worse, never at all.

Besides there isn't any processor or skin differences in the VS985 vs. The D850 or so on. At the least they should provide the ability to flash it to ours using their own tool. Heck even custom ROMs love the international models better and shaft the USA.

Soon as I prove the M8 gets lollipop and the G3 remains on 4.4.2, four versions behind I'll sell the G3. I'm not getting the support I thought I paid for and fell for all the Android blog sites saying how it's getting lollipop by the end of the year or before the Nexus, which were nothing short of lies.

Meanwhile I deal with the likes of 'kachow ' here and the tons on G+ posting their screen shots of their G3 running Lollipop while mine lacks all the cool new features

You paid for the phone and the services provided by your carrier. Android is Open Source and therefore 'free', you didn't pay for it. ;-) ...please Santa, give him a fast sale or update his phone. I'd give you my update if I had one!

...and here's the chorus... :D

Said before, many devs are in Europe, Russia, Asia, I know for a fact there's many ROM devs are right here in China...and obviously those devs can't make things for USA version phones...because they don't have them. Besides the processor and skin, the basebands can be different, e.g. North American specific cellular bands and modes. And devs do have to ensure compatiblity to make sure users phones are not going to break or become bricked.

It's the policy of LG to do regional roll outs. Because of all the variants they have to deal with. Poland first, USA last, that seems to be what they do. Next time you know, don't buy an LG, or at least make sure you get a phone that's not carrier specific.

Yeh and many are also screaming about their favourite apps and games being broken as well. I got no intention and interest in upgrading to Lollipop for the time being, not until I'm sure that the apps I use for my work will be OK, and at the moment a couple of them are not. It was the same when Kitkat first came out, took devs a while to get their stuff updated, and there's some that were never updated.

FWIW Cyanogen(a US company) does ROMs for the Verizon VS985, they definitely list that model.

PS there's a bunch of international users over on Oppo Forums, howling that they want Kitkat, never mind Lollipop...LOL

It's Samsung policy to do regional rollout as well. I won't buy any new device unless the world can update at the same time. For now, it means Motorola and HTC.

I think it's odd though how the Verizon Moto X has Android 5.0 despite being on the 'evil' Verizon. I've had nothing short of excellent service from Verizon...don't understand the hate.

I count 15 different lollipop vs985 support threads on XDA, for third party implementations. Lots of choices if you want to experiment.

Do you want some cheese with that whine?

All I want is consistent updates in Android. Apple does it, but somehow Android is a big mess where only the international model owners get updates in reasonable fashion. Yet I have no reason to complain? When I'm not satisfied I say so. I would expect anyone unsatisfied with the support of their brand new product to voice a complaint. Or have we all become that apathetic?

For the record, TouchWiz exists in the UK as do carriers so please enough with blaming Verizon or the skin of the device. It doesn't make it any more valid now than it did the 100 of times I heard it before.

As many of us have said, go look at the overseas users in other forums (not just here) and see how many hate it. Bugs, blu-tooth issues, wifi issues, battery issues. That's what you want right now? Just so you can say you have the latest and greatest? Do you realize that currently LP is NOT the major OS running on Android phones? It has such a small market share because it JUST came out not two months ago.

Heck, KK doesn't have the market share on androids. Currently, that is JB. So, please don't act like your phone is the only one with LP. It isn't. It also isn't the only newer phone without it here in the US or abroad.

I would rather they get the bugs worked out overseas and then release it here in the states, rather than release a buggy version that makes everyone go back to KK and possibly never go back to LP.

If you are so inclined as to wanting LP right now, go get a custom ROM installed if you are so impatient. You might be happy with it, you might not. But, what you get right now on the custom ROMs is pretty darned closed to what is currently out there for the overseas LG G3 users. It is a work in progress. It took Kit Kat about a year to mature AFTER it was released.

I just don't understand why you feel you "deserve" it right now. It will come. So we don't get it like the overseas people. So what? Again, they are getting the 1.0 version of LP and believe me, it was NOTHING to sneeze at. Buggy, battery hungry at times, and just plain not responsive for normal things, like keyboard input, etc.

I have reinstalled LP 5.0.2 on my 2012 Nexus 7 and let me tell you, it makes a world of different from the 5.0 release, which was unusable on my N7. I didn't wait to see what everyone else said when it first came out, so I just blindly installed it. Never again. I will wait and see what everyone else has to say and then decide if it's worth it.

From what I've read on the G3, it's not worth it right now. Some people are getting better performance on the custom ROM versions, but again, they are still having other issues with radio signals, battery life, etc.

So, be careful what you wish for. I hope that when it DOES come to the G3, it's 5.0.2 or later with a lot of the bugs and performance issues worked out. Otherwise, it's a waste of my time.

Sorry, not true.

Lots of sites track update history - overall, Verizon is very much at the bottom of the barrel among the majors, only occasionally having rapid updates on select models.

Until recently, Samsung was holding the top spot in the USA.

And unlike overseas carriers either shipping out GSM updates untouched or simply referring to the manufacturer's site for them, updates are regularly held back by US carriers under the claim of quality testing and yet somehow, they ship no bloatware before it's time.

These are all matters of public record.

You're free to not believe it but in so doing all we have left is a horse beating.

He's dead Jim.

Let's move on. ;)

All I want is consistent updates in Android. Apple does it,

Apple does it because there's like only one version of the iPhone. An iPhone 6 you might get from Verizon or other US carrier, is the same as anywhere else. But if and when there are issues and bugs with iOS updates, the whole world is howling, and not just Poland or whatever.

Anyway as EM has already hinted, this horse is well and truly beaten to death.

Downloaded 5.0 OTA tonight.

Don't get too impatient, the LG skin is still pretty heavy, it still lags like mad and other than a nice new keyboard, new notifications and some other tabbed stuff it's the same.

I'm going back to Nexus devices!

What country do you live in?
Norway was supposed to get 5.0 OTA last week of November or first week of December.
Still we don't have 5.0 OTA.

I am hoping it will come soon.

Per Phandroid (site that hosts these forums), a future release of LP will fix a memory leak that has been plaguing LP. Hopefully, this will be the version we eventually get for the G3 here in the US. Definitely need this fixed:

http://phandroid.com/2014/12/29/android-50-lollipop-memory-leak-bug-marked-future-release/

Here's another article detailing more of the issues for all the Nexus devices. And note that not ALL Nexus devices have gotten LP yet:

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/12/30/nexus-lollipop-problem/

I have 5.0.2 on my Nexus 7 and even though performance is good, I have noticed that after awhile, the tablet will just freeze and other times, randomly reboot and that seems to point to this memory leak. However, this is not my daily driver device, so for me, upgrading it to LP was not an issue. I'll still stick with it on this device as it runs fine for the most part. It's just after awhile, it does tend to slow down and then randomly reboot. And I saw this on my previous phone when I installed CM12 on it.

So, a perfect example why having the bleeding edge version of something is NOT always the greatest thing, and why it's better to exercise patience.

So, I definitely do NOT want LP on my G3 yet. Let's wait and have it fixed per the article above and then release it. My phone is so stable right now on KK and it NEVER has rebooted. Heck, on other phones, I've had to reboot a few times a week to increase performance. Not with this phone. I haven't had to reboot it myself at all to make it perform better and it's never rebooted on it's own. Now that's stability.
