Meanwhile . . . over 300 million miles away, after a 6 billion mile journey, an unmanned research vessel was able to land on a tiny comet. Back here on Earth, Google and Motorola can't manage to supply a freakin' cellphone or even to effectively communicate the situation to waiting would-be buyers.

I just successful ordered a 64g white. Doesn't ship until the 26th though. I hope to pick one up in NYC next week and cancel.... but at least I'm in line. What a soap opera.

Is this Google's (and the carrier's) way of making us sitting in line for hours waiting for a phone? Their version of an iPhone frenzy?

In fairness, the Moto store has had the 32GB version in stock for hours (and still does) in both colors. The 64GB units just seem especially constrained.

Edit - Also, as much as I loathe the whole "look at me, I'm so cool waiting in line for an iPhone" thing - those folks at least have a fairly good promise of that phone actually being available when their turn in the line comes up.

These reviews are bad. Some try to sugar coat it, but there are a number of major drawbacks that IMHO are unacceptable at this price point:

  • battery life is sub-par
  • screen brightness is nowhere near as good as Note 4
  • internal storage is REALLY slow for reads. Slower than Nexus 5 and 3x slower than the Moto X and Note 4 (this is likely where they cut a lot of the costs)
  • lag where the N5 doesn't lag (as reported by ARs and the Verge. this is ridiculous that it's lagging while the N5 is able to run Lollipop without lag. An SD805 + QHD should not lag.

Way too many trade-offs for the price while, for me, also compromising on the size.

I may just take the order and then see if I can live with some of this stuff, since I will have 14 days to return. But damn I'm really discouraged by these reviews. :(

There was a software update yesterday so some of what they are saying could be on an old build. The reviews to me seem to be 50/50. The Verge and Droid Life are fairly positive.

For me, They can mention Samsung all they want. I don't want anything from Samsung that is a phone...and tvs.

From what I'm reading its a solid phone. No, its not going to have the helpful/gimmicky phablet features of the note (S-pen, multiwindow, ect) , but we knew that going into it.

Ars seemed fairly critical, but lots of others have been positive.

Tech reviews are, for the most part, a colossal waste of time. They are always slanted one way or another. I've read several over the years that were actually full of intentional lies. There is very little objectivity in the tech media. Everyone plays favorites with the brands the like and tries to damage the ones they don't.

I've read more than one review saying that the Note 4 screen is brighter than the iPhone 6 Plus. That's hogwash. I held them side by side. Both on 100% brightness. Its not even close. The iPhone kills the Note. That's when I realized that you can't believe what you read.

Do Tmo stores (or any store) have their demo units out or are they still waiting til next week to bust those out too?

I ask b/c I would go to my local Tmo store, even tho im with vzw, to get a hands on but I cant get anyone there to answer the phone...

I have read a few very complimentary reviews, none so much as Forbes. I like Forbes for a lot of their writing/writers. Here's the "bottom line" from the Forbes review.

Seems like a lot of reviews are conflicting: some are saying it has average battery life, while others say it is excellent. Camera quality has the same type of ranges, as do other things like call quality, audio quality, etc.

As has been pointed out, all reviews are going to come with some sort of bias, not to mention the fact that Google could easily push out an update to fix most of the perceived problems, and we'll get it a lot quicker without having to worry about carrier interference. Since the phone hasn't even come to market yet, I'm still not even sure these reviews are using the latest software builds - having the embargo means they could have had these reviews completed a week or more ago.

Bottom line for me, I'm still really looking forward to the phone. As long as it works without issue on Verizon, I don't think I'll have anything to complain about assuming I don't get one with a manufacturing defect or something (knock on wood ;)).
