Official OTA Update Discussion

Had no problems aside from the GPS with my phone.

Post update its been acting stupid. Its shut off on me twice, once when I had to be up for work in the morning. Needless to say I missed that day.

Even my quadrant scores are lower. 840 when it used to be at or around 900.

From start to finish the entire process took maybe 3 or 4 minutes. I did NOT unroot and did NOT un-lag fix. (I didn't really care if something happens then I'll work on it later) phone rebooted and everything came back up working great. Ran a quadrant once it was on and hit 2319 :-) I must say that I can NOT STAND the new youtube bar though. I'll test the GPS later on today maybe around lunch.

I decided once I saw people bricking and doing all of this work for a useless update I don't need it or want to do all of this work for something thats not froyo....then I changed my mind and the results are great.

Mine failed at 50% (got to that point, said update failed, and rebooted automatically). Refreshed the phone to stock with Odin, tried again. Same result - plus, sound from the speakers is now completely gone. Refreshed to stock again, this time with no update attempt - sound still gone. Looking like I may have to go to AT&T.

I was wondering about the people who got a text message saying an update was coming, and who then waited for the update to be pushed (if there's anyone who didn't do a manual update at that point :p). How much time passed between the text and the download/update update starting? I got a text this morning about 2 and a half hours ago.

Maybe related... I had flashed to DesignGears zip of the update and was booted to that when I got the text, but then I flashed back to my ROM backup, because I wanted to see if I get it pushed normally this way.
Thanks.

Had WiFi at the time, but it turned on 3G automatically. Mine seems to have downloaded over 3G since the icon was flashing.

Just checked my AT&T account and it downloaded on 3G (16 MB) not wifi, even though I was connected to wifi when I started the process, and the wifi icon stayed on throughout.

I did this, got the update, GPS does work but still not as good as my Aria phone...but it is better then before at least I'm in the same city block now and not downtown someplace wandering when I'm supposed to be on the outskirts of the city hahahah!!!! Twitter is working better and not hanging but that can be because twitter updated their program too...FB loads the same, I still get juts every once and a while when backing out of a program but the Aria does that so I assume its android. I haven't got the long periods of just sitting on a black screen like I did before. I noticed in battery usage, android OS is the top culprit now and not display, which is odd, wonder if that is a fix or if display is still using the same amount of power and now something in android OS is using even more...the battery does appear to be OK though, it's not like draining that bad. All in all, I'm happy!! :D

I tried updating my phone yesterday for that ota update got it, but when I realized it was downloading the whole thing with my wifi shut off I panicked and cancelled it. I tried again by manually setting the time, but I accidentally forwarded it a month instead of a day, and now the phone will try to connect to the server but it immediately gets kicked off, saying it could not connect to the AT&T server. Now it tells me I need to wait 740 hours before I check again. any way to reset this?

Well, my GPS was much, much faster yesterday after the update.
It's back to it's old tricks again today. I wonder if it's just faster after a reboot? Maybe I'll try rebooting and see if it's fast again.

How about resetting it to beyond the 740 hours so that the timer thinks your due? Yeah, I know the ramifications, but if the update is that important that's a way to retrieve it.

FYI, I updated using EDGE. Yes, it took about 45 minutes to an hour, but it did work. My 30 minute screen timeout kicked in scaring the poop out of me, but I hit the power button and the progress bar was chugging along under the covers, albeit VERY SLOWLY.

Separately, it's possible that an executable file will appear that contains the download / installation so that you wouldn't need to rely on the file transfer.

EDIT: I note that blackhemi beat me to the punch. It's the hemi.

I stumbled upon this while looking for the DB that stores all the OTA update information...because somehow I managed to do something that resulted in my waiting 8100 hours (~370 days! LOL) before I can check for an update again. I posted this at XDA too.

You need to be rooted for this to work.

Open ADB/terminal emulator and run the following commands:

su
cd /dbdata/databases/com.wssyncmldm
cp wssdmdatabase.db wssdmdatabase.bak
rm wssdmdatabase.db
reboot

What this does is it backups up your wssdmdatabase.db file and deletes it. This file stores the timestamp in which you last ran a manual check for an update. The OS won't let you check for an update until you are 24 hours past this timestamp. Deleting it forces the OS to recreate it again and allows you to check for an update as well.

Worked for me.

I had my device rooted via the update.zip and lag fixed from the RyanZA's OCLF app. and then also the market fix from the "SGS tools"

Of course the most recent update failed. So I undid the lag fix and tried. No go. I then unrooted. and no go. I can't undo the market fix but i doubt that it really an issue.

Anyway I still have no luck with this. Any advice?

Yes I tried manually setting it beyond that, all it did was take a shorter amount of time to tell me that the connection to the server failed, which lead me to believe I did something to break the phone. I guess I'll try again, maybe it's server load.

EDIT: It's working now, I know it's a side note but this could be really expensive for me: Why does the captivate need to download updates via 3g? My wifi is on, but it's still downloading the whole thing on 3g, and I only have the 200MB data plan, so even 12MB is a lot, especially considering last month I hit 198MB. What happens when they release Froyo, potentially over 100mb?

AT&T OTA downloads do not count against your data usage.

I just change the date manually - add one day each time.

Now all I get is either 'No Updates' or Connection Failed'.

I wonder if the OTA update is counted aginst your 200MB quota. It's a question for AT&T customer service, and if it is ask for a re-rate if you exceed your 200MB because of it. My experience over the years is that they're quite accomodating. Of course you could get someone who's in a bad mood and, if so, simply call back.
