Official OTA Update Discussion

just got off the phone, looks like i have to send it in. i had to argue with the woman for 5 minutes telling her my battery had power, and it was not my battery that was the problem. she still seemed to think that was the problem and told me to plug it in but i repeated about 20 times my phone wouldnt turn on. anyway they emailed me a shipping label and im going to send it in, good thing i didnt sell me old phone like i nearly did

For anyone following this thread but living in a cave:

The update is now being pushed out. Plenty of other threads about it, so go check those out. :)

Odin3 doesn't work. Phone is completely bricked. Heading to AT&T now...

DO NOT PANIC if the update seems to be taking a while. It does take some time to update and it will stay on the Galaxy S logo for some time. Be patient and let the update process complete, and put it on the charger if you can. the stock units should all update more often than not.

... The update failed and when the phone automatically restarted, it died.

Let me just say that I did the update this morning and it immediately locked in and worked. Then after an hour or so my phone shut down and after I turned it back on, it locked in quickly but the location was way off. Anyone know of a good lawyer that can help with this? I tried to get ATT to exchange the phone and given that it's been more than 30 days they are saying they can't do anything and the warranty department said that samsung actually said that the fix won't come till next month and to not change phones because of such issue. This is ridiculous! All I want is a phone that works, and am still paying for something that is not working. The month excuse I've heard it before, and I'm tired of waiting. Anyone have any advice?

Mine updated fine. Can't even power his up. Stock ROM, good battery (was on charger at the time)

Same. I just exchanged mine at the store.

Luckily, this phone the GPS locked instantly on and stayed locked the whole way home. Now to re-dl everything...

I'm one of them. Update stopped in the middle. The phone thinks the update is complete and tried to apply it. Completely bricks it.

Did mine through wifi. Although if I remember correctly the 3g symbol popped up at least once, however no data was transferred through it according to 3g watchdog.

Had WiFi at the time, but it turned on 3G automatically. Mine seems to have downloaded over 3G since the icon was flashing.

It did a half update for me...its like i got apart of the update.

baseband - I897UCJF6
Kernel - 2.6.29 jetaek.lee@sep-11 #2
build - eclair

i notice the baseband and build didnt update but it appears the kernel did?!?!?! it used to say jul or jun something if I remember but the rest doesn't appear and now the update won't update, plus everytime i plug my phone in it thinks it is plugging via usb even though I plug into a wall socket...ugh, phone was at least good before this and now it just acts odd...like it juts around, weatherbug won't update..i've done 2 factory resets and reloaded my apps and still some just take longer to load..wish I never even bothered with this update LOL!!! At least mine didn't brick but I sure hope they come with a fix soon.

My phone is completely stock and updated fine. While it was updating it stopped at 50% for like 2 mins and scared the hell out of me. After that however it continued as normal. This was earlier today before there were threads reporting problems. Had I waited and read those first I probably wouldn't have tried.

Mine paused at 50% for about 3-5 minuts also, I just let it sit there on the table a few minuts while I got a snack n stuff. A little while later I heared it restart itself. After it finished rebooting, I got a message saying it completed successfully.

Maybe some people did have trouble, but Im willing to bet, some people need to be patient. We waited 7 weeks (some of us) for this update (if it really does fix the problem) so waiting 7 minuts more for it to do it's thing seems reasonible. If your update seems to pause for a few minuts, dont freak out and go ripping the battery out or something. If it doesnt complete in 15 minuts or more, then it may be time to start wondering.

I was at home with WiFi connected, but it seemed to be DLing via 3g since the 3g icon was present and showing traffic.

Also note, these data updates DO NOT affect your data usage on your data plan. I checked that and found a statement on AT&Ts website.. sorry I din't grab the link.

I'm going to hold off: a) it seems like the GPS fix hasn't been confirmed and 2) someone at XDA will build a simple download update package *if* it turns out to be worth it.

I actually removed my Voodoo/ext4 to apply this, it's generating an error, so I'm going to go back to the Voodoo fix - it may not resolved the GPS sketchiness but the phone runs incredibly fast with it.

sorry to hear that...it seriously blows. I'm running the Cognition rom and am perfectly satisfied with what's going on...don't think I'll even attempt an update. My phone is working as it should and I don't think it's worth the risk.

If I were in your situation, I'd be in the ATT store raising some serious hell until I walked out with a phone that worked. You talked to anyone at cust. svc about it or anything?

I know I'm a noob and all that jazz, but it seems this OTA can really f%ck your phone up.

Not to alarm people, but this OTA update bricked a stock Captivate - xda-developers

and apparently tech support encourages NOT updating also...

Conversation with Tech Support - xda-developers

Is kind of disconcerting. I think it is total BS. All of it. And I'm sick of it. If it turns out that AT&T jumped the gun and released it before Samsung was done with it (which I HIGHLY doubt) then that is a major goof that should never ever happen. I'm sure some people are being fired if that's the case. If it is an official (and approved) update (but NOT the GPS update) then what the hell are Samsung technical support doing. Seems like every tech support person has something different to say. I take anything said by a tech support person as an opinion. Their OWN opinion. I updated perfectly fine and all is well. All updates have some level of danger involved and all phone updates have caused bricked (or seemingly bricked) phones. Too much misinformation and hearsay. All of this is of course my own opinion...and I'm blowing off steam so there you are.
