Root [Official Root Guide] Kyocera Hydro Vibe

Thanks Troy for the guide, the vibe is awesome with Jelly Bean.

The adb driver I used was AdbDriverInstaller
http://adbdriver.com/downloads
It mentions Samsung, but worked perfect on the Kyocera.

After following your guide, I did a factory reset, installed App Quarantine and placed the Kyocera Update Tool in the Quarantine drawer.

The phone works great, and without KitKat, I can access the MicroSD and use toggles to turn on/off antennas without having to manually go into settings.

edit: the firmware is april 11 2014 4.3
it fails when it trys to activate, however i do not want to activate this phone, anything i can do?

edit:now it says rooted after downloading the super chinese one in the link, but i have yet to download super su, as it says cannot connect to the play store

edit 2:now I have got the root 100%, just had to restart the phone

I guess this isn't a big deal--just sort of annoying: I followed the directions to a tee--right out of the box, I activated, avoided the firmware update (I'm on the kernel from April), and rooted. But, for whatever reason, I just can't get SuperSU to update binaries; Kinguser remains my SU app. It just seems like something is keeping SuperSU from taking over. I've lost count of the number of times I've tried the steps over and over again--uninstalling Kinguser, reinstalling root, installing SuperSU, failing to install binaries, repeat...I'm just not sure what's up. Am I missing anything?

Troyfoxxin, since kyocera doesn't use a 16 digit password (like samsung or htc) can you help me unlock nv items? I'd like to use this phone on us cellular but need to change certain nv items to make it work. Can you PM me to help? Love this phone!

Never heard of that happening. When i did it. i ran into no issues first try except for Superuser only one i could get to work was SuperSU. if you haven't shut the phone off completely. and turn it back on and run SuperSU and see what it does. but if you see Kinuser part of the root is there, just needs the binaries. if still no luck go ahead and try Superuser instead of SuperSU. but last i tried that all it liked to do was close on me.

Awsome. Make sure not to run the OTA update. or youll brick it into a bootloop.

Hi... This only works with Android 4.3 so don't do the over air update as stated countless times earlier in this thread...

I used Rootgenius in my pc...set the usb on the phone up to media device...ran rootgenius....it finds the phone USB and roots if successful.... Reboot and try again if not successful...Then I installed SuperSu from the playstore... rebooted and then uninstalled Kinguser since the update for it is a security risk and Kinguser exploits the initial root from within root genius...I never updated Kinguser but had to do everything twice to get it all to work....I also had to click on Supersu for it to ask itself for permission to make changes.....lol.

I then installed Titanium backup which successfully uninstalled kinguser... This should all be done after you activate your phone with Virgin but you can unroot with root genius, delete SuperSu and then activate as long as you didn't delete any stock apps that are required. Titianium can freeze apps, back them up and uninstall apps you don't want if root exists.

The SuperSu link from my pc...

thanks foto- im on android 4.3 and force close Kyocera update tool whenever it pops up, no worries there

But I didn't activate the phone.. could this be the culprit between regular (english) version of rootgenius working on some phones but not others?

I can't even get past the rootgenius step to the other things you wrote up! How many times should I "reboot and try again" when root keeps failing?? More than 5-10?

From cooldude's post I thought he ran into the same problem and fixed it by downloading a different, more Chinese version of Rootgenius (and without needing to activate the phone).

I think I saw the version in a YouTube video too but no working link to the program with basically all chinese layout of buttons and so on.

Yeah, can't do anything with supersu, kinguser, etc yet

Is root really still possible using regular rootgenius if I reboot and try again over 10 times?? ..IDK

rootgenius works the same no matter is english or chinese. and phone not being active it will try to active at every boot up. So if you plan to use the phone need to activate it before attempting to root.

When I got the phone I did not activate it first.... You must have debugging set on the phone, attached to computer running root genius and it rooted.

I kept stopping the firmware update and set the phone up using wifi.... After I was sure I liked the phone and how it worked. I then unrooted the phone with root genius, uninstalled or had kinguser and superSu stopped, called Virgin and activated my phone.... no worries... Phones can only be activated without root.

Root genius should work the same no matter the language... maybe try to download it again or reboot your phone with root genius on and running where it gets stuck and the phone usb/debug attached.... That got it rooted once that way for me. I have re-rooted the phone since activation and set it up with Titianium backup so any apps I may delete can be restored if they are required later... Just don't delete apps that are necessary for your phone to work and boot!

aah yeah .. all this info did it and i GOT ROOT -- re-downloading, rebooting the phone, etc - gotta keep trying all the above and it does work. thank you!

Hate to go off topic but my fat32 formatted 64gb sd card isn't mounting on this phone even though it still works on my old android 4.1. i tried something with the file platform.xml but didn't fix it. Any insight and/or ideas on a fix for this? either way, finally got root thanks again

Hi: Glad you got root.... You can unroot with root genius but I would first delete SuperSu. I also found that while rooting and unrooting my phone to activate it; that when I disabled kinguser (to install SuperSu) which was installed from root genius ...
when I tried to re-root with root genius it got stuck and didn't root the phone... I went to settings, apps, disabled apps (tab hidden on right side top) and found kinguser there... rootgenius did not overwrite my settings and once I enabled kinnguser and ran rootgenous again....I had root. Install SuperSu and let it work with Kinguser....then find an uninstall program that will uninstall kinguser so SuperSu can take full contol. The update for Kinguser may contain spyware or worse, so I don't recommend updating it.....getting rid of it altogether might be the safest way to go.

As far as 64GB micro sd..... I tried formatting and partitioning two different cards all kinds of ways to get them to work and this phone won't work with the 64GB cards I tried and this phone may not work with any 64GB card.... 32GB works fine and is the spec maximum.... Enjoy!

Ps... I'm sure many of us would love to use a 64GB card.... If anyone has luck they should post the specific card, model, etc....thx

I got it rooted a few months ago gave up on it, then tried it again few months later then poof. -_- This thing is haywire but it worked not much complaining after that. If you like to abuse apps adding patches ect i'd prefer {Lucky Patcher}, And or {Game Killer}. Thxs Again Troy :D...

I have gotten larger SD Cards to work. Really Most android phones are able to read larger MicroSD cards but the kernel only set up to read SD Card formatted to Fat32 File Systems. Most 32GB cards are formatted in fat32 but anything larger than 32Gb the filesystem just don't work. So they have to be formated in another filesystem which the kernel on the given Android phone may not support. So you need a app that adds that support if that phones kernel does not have it.

So formatted right a APP can add support to mount it. The set up i used was formating my 64GB + microSD to NTFS and using this app to mount it https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter

But sadly its a Root APP. So thanks to the OTA update I am stuck with a 32GB.

Hey everyone, so not to drill this in to the ground, but
This will not work on 4.4.2?
I get the this is to hard error, also I have tried the Chinese version.
And since theres no root I cant downgrade to jellybean without a rom.
Like a catch 22?
So I have to just wait it out?
I have the cdma version

Is there a way to use BUMP to unlock the bootloader or kernel for 4.4.2 so we can root this phone if we took the update?

New Root available for 4.4.2. See Original post for details.
