Root Official Root Thread

Rooting is generally safe, I haven't heard of anyone bricking a phone or anything like that. But its something to bear in mind.. If the instructions are followed correctly (maybe read them all before starting) then their shouldn't be a problem.

Also, any Asian Desire owners wanting to root should NOT update the firmware on their phone to the new firmware version (1.19)

Also, according to Paul's twitter it's being testing as we speak by some (plus) members of the MoDaCo community

After they are done, it's our turn!

I was reading about this underclocking app that you can use on the rooted desire.

Is that safe? Obviously underclocking isn't going to cause it to overheat or anything, but for some reason it just sounds dodgy!

ok, I'm a complete noob on the android (i'm expecting my Desire to arrive tomorrow by mail!), but is there a downside for rooting the device? does that remove the sense UI for example or anything.
i'm sorry if my question seems silly, but the HTC android is (or will be) my first real smartphone after upgrading from Nokia E71.

Hope mods dont mind me linking this , if yes please delete ;)

Creating a GoldCard - Android @ MoDaCo

Thanks dude, have read that a few times but havent attempted it fully yet! To be honest I dont fully understand what to do from here;

Ensure you have unzipped the SDK, then open a command prompt
to the extract location. Change to the 'tools directory.

Like, how do I do that?

I think I'm gonna wait until Paul has sorted it so you can just use Windows (only have access to Win!) and also when he has got the MCR ROM out so I can go straight to that...

Things were so much easier with the Hero!!!

hah, as everyone starts to root, it is going to be very quiet in the forum for the next few hours!!

Can someone just answer me a question before I root my desire?

If I root my desire, can I still continue to use the existing ROM and then update in the normal OTA manner when HTC release updated versions?

That's in windows mate.

Press windows start button, if on windows 7, type CMD into the search box to laucnch a command prompt or if on windows XP click on run and then type cmd and press enter to launch command prompt.

Then navigate to the install directory.

e.g. if your androidsdk directory is c:\android, type:

cd\android

It's going to be in another directory than that though!

I'm struggling to see what I'm really going to gain from rooting my phone.

If it does really offer some advanced functionality (other than save to sd), then please let me know!

I'd hate to have to wait for froyo to be a rooted version before updating.

Any advice?

Thats what I thought... I understand what you mean, but still cant get it to play ball... I extracted it to a folder on my desktop, but cant get it to navigate to it... Says 'System cannot find path specified'

Sorry, this is all new to me...

Are you using windows 7? (If you are not on windows 7, your desktop directory will be somewhere else - I think c:\documents and settings\users or something like that, it's a while since I used an older windows OS)

If so, you need to launch a command prompt, ensure it is on the c: drive.

Then type:

cd\users\<currentusername>\desktop

for me, that's:

cd\users\gilles\desktop

Press enter

once there, type dir and then press enter

that will show you all files on your desktop (confirm it is your desktop that you see - ie. the files are what you have on your desktop)

Then type:

cd\android-sdk_r05-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools

Press enter

I think that should be right for you, unless you called your extract something different.

Now you are in the tools directory....

You should then be able to run the commands from that point. Remember, you need to have HTC Sync installed and your phone connected in sync mode.

I'm still debating whether to do the root... I've got my gold card sd card now, but I'm worried about the implications of rooting.

I want to be able to get official updates - Can I still do this if it is rooted? If not, what options do I have for updating?

Thanks all! Hope my explanation helps you!

Thanks mate, know what im doing now (looked at the unlocker guide)... But having problems getting ADB to work... I get the following message;

adb server is out of date. killing...
ADB server didn't ACK
* failed to start demon *
error:

?!?!? - Back to the drawing board I think!

I currently want to just whack on the generic ROM as this Orange one is crap... When Paul has a Windows only fix for rooting then I will do so and install the MCR ROM when released...

I would say that once you go MCR you will never go back to stock... Any improvements provided in the official updates would then be made available by Paul as update.zips (new radio version for example)...

Woohoo!

SORTED IT!

Now have a GoldCard and a lovely Generic ROM on my Desire!

Really cant wait for a full Windows only Rooting solution from Paul, along with MCR for the Desire!

Now its time for bed!

apps2sd <3

Lekky, I'm getting 'error on line 5' error when I try to install apps2sd. any clue How i take it from here?

Was thinking going into recovery and doing a swipe/factory reset again and then trying again

Looks like a Windows only root solution wont be possible, therefore gonna need to give it a go at some point (just waiting for MCR)...

I used SliTaz as the linux distro, burnt to cd and loaded it that way. Small download and quick and easy. You might even be able to run it from a usb.
