I used SliTaz as the linux distro, burnt to cd and loaded it that way. Small download and quick and easy. You might even be able to run it from a usb.

Paul has been recommending TinyCoreLinux...

I'm happy with whatever is the easiest! Never used this kind of stuff before, proper novice...

BUT...

Have to get Rooted and MCR on!

Are you installing it from the goldcard yeah?

Alright, got it installed!

Now got another problem..

Partionioned my sd card as follows:

Swap file 160 (did not know the correct number to be fair)
Ext2= 640
fat32 the remaining

then i upgraded ext2 to ext3

however, all apps still install to my phone and not on the sd card, any clue as to why this is?

I'm running the TinyCore cd (or trying).

Created a goldcard and have burnt the iso image. Boots to Linux fine, open terminal, switch on phone with back button held down, start typing commands in terminal and the following happens when I get to the second line:

mount: mounting /dev/cdrom on /mnt/cdrom failed: No medium found.

What have I missed? Is it something to do with the goldcard?

Have you put it in recovery mode prior to connecting it to your computer?

it's the screen with the red triangle

I've been thinking of giving this rooting thing ago. problem is that, I haven't done anything like this before, such as running commands on windows, so I can see this being abit of a challenge.

Whats the best way to save / backup my allready dl apps. (the only paid apps I have atm is Dig deeper, gameboid, gbcoid.)

Also wondered if theres any tips for a neebie, before giving this rooting ago.

cheers AP.

It's actually running commands in Linux.

This was my first root also, ddn't know about the linux bit when i started.

So I downloaded the ubuntu cd and rebooted my laptop, fired up ubuntu and i was all set :)

There's a way of doing it totally in windows, you just have to amalgamate several of the guides currently knocking about. I will try and do this shortly.

Scrap that, my apps2sd isn't working for some reason, I'll be trying to sort that out :(

just checked, got about 20 MB of apps installed and only 7 mb dissappeared of the internal memory! it's working alright, maybe not 100% but what the heck

The way some posted I thought the phone memory wouldn't go down at all. Incidentally it is and others have confirmed that is what is happening.

So the install isn't messed up, my assumption is. I can live with that! I was honestly thinking what is going on? because I am fairly good at picking up technology and new things (to me) on the computer and the instructions couldn't seem simpler.

It still stores some kind of footprint on the phone, have you guys moved over the dalvik-cache too? Doing that gave me an extra 40-50mb of free space on the phone.

Yeah I have moved the cache. Had just shy of 140mb free on the phone with no apps. I got confused being the numpty that I am thinking the SD card storage space shown in the phone settings would go down when each app was installed - but that's what the 512mb 'hidden' ext 3 partition is for isn't it?! i.e. I should have realised that the card storage was around 500mb less :o

A heads up for people wanting to make a cheap goldcard - Tesco are doing Sandisk 2gb ones for

yeh I also moved the dalvik cache, internal phone memory still goes down somewhat. Not much tho!

A few root related questions for your consideration...

1. What happens when HTC release a 2.2 update (assuming they manage an update before we all die of old age, al

-@ lekky, are you going to install the CM mod? I'm still in doubt whether or not i'd switch

Edit: It does NOT have sense UI yet

Nope, for one i love my sense, and second I have everything I wanted from rooting, namley apps2sd, wifi hotspot and memory management!

On point #2 - what are the performance implications of having the Dalvik cache on the SD card or the phone memory? Presumably using whichever is faster will benefit the phone if this is executable code? Going back to my original question at #2, does the size of this cache actually matter? I don't see any problem with using the phone's ROM space, just that it's horribly limited when it comes to storing full apps with their assets.

On point #3, what do you mean "the rest on the phone memory" - the rest of what?

Rooting is generally safe, I haven't heard of anyone bricking a phone or anything like that. But its something to bear in mind.. If the instructions are followed correctly (maybe read them all before starting) then their shouldn't be a problem.

Also, any Asian Desire owners wanting to root should NOT update the firmware on their phone to the new firmware version (1.19)

I'm really comtemplating Rooting, but you mention Asian Desires, do you mean Asian versions or Asian based? I have a UK Desire but I live in Asia, and I've just checked my firmware version as 2.1 update 1, I don't see (1.19) anywhere?

Sorry I'm a total noob, the rooting process looks daunting, but sounds fun.

Cheers

Check the bootlaoder version on your phone:

This guide lets you root only a HTC Desire which has a bootloader version of 0.75 or below. To check the bootloader version, switch off the device. Turn it on by holding the ‘back’ key. You should be able to see the text ‘HBOOT’, and a version number besides it. This number is the bootloader version.

just half way through rooting now. just out of interest can i remove the default apps like peep, friend stream etc with a windows machine or will i need linux boot disc?

great guide and main reason im rooting is for the apps2sd feature.
