Yes even if someone was on DH12 if a new OTA comes out it just overwrite the previous modem and build so yes thats no obstacle

Ah ok I didnt know if big V forced you to take an ota before you could take the next one. Thats good to know for some of the ppl that I have told to avoid dl09.

Now theres a familiar face ;) SK you try the Froyo yet my friend

Not yet. How's it coming along? I need at least some semblance of stability and trustworthiness as I use this phone for work, too. Although, I'm itchin' to put a new ROM on tonight. I already Titanium'd all my important stuff, including my favorite stock apps like the calculator and clock/alarm app.

Any special recommendations, Saps?

I rooted my brother in laws with DJ05/Super Dark/-100 Voodoo5 and after a couple weeks out of the blue his gallery stopped displaying pictures. He immediately freaked out and exploded my text telling me he would waiting at my house for me to "fix his damn phone and return it to stock" and so I did. I did the Adrynalyne DI01 one-click ODIN package after I disabled VooDoo ion red CWM, then we immediately went and pushed the OTA (DL09) on it and I said to him.... There you go, bone stock... I have nothing to do with it now. He then went to open the gallery... and the pictures would open, but it took like 10 seconds to open them.

Some folks freak out if they have a problem. I knew he was that type of guy, plus he one of the 5% of Americans that does not own a Laptop or PC of any sort. So on top being a slight bit of a spaz over the phone acting up, he really has his hands tied and can not try to do anything about it. So for that type of user, maybe bone stock is the way to go. Remember, things do not always go according to the plan! So if you can not handle that emotionally, I would honestly say to hang back and stay stock until you feel you want to root and change the phone soooooo bad that you are willing to accept that you may have to wipe and retry if things do not go right the first time.

Im rooted, but I see nothing wrong with the folks that do not wish to do it. There are also plenty of folks that are not "into" computer stuff and when reading the instructions on how to root.... read it as if they are looking at another language. If that is you, you should not root in my opinion.

I have helped my "chill" friends and family members root and mod up their android phones, and we've enjoyed it, but I don't think I'd risk it on someone I thought would react like that. I'd help them put on custom launchers and google maps, but that's about it. I've helped friends and family root the Fascinate, the Eris, the Evo, the Droid X ... So far it's gone quite well, and none of them are going to start my shoes on fire and take away my birthday if their phone locks up, either. :D

When I was doing my interview yesterday we stumbled onto phones and come to find out the girl that was doing the interview had a fascinate. So I finally ended up asking her so do you do anything to it like rooting it, which in turn she looked at me like I had 2 heads. So then I asked her if she had received the ota update. She yet again looked at me like I was crazy. She had no idea that phones even got updates, I know I was like omg too. I then showed her how to look for an update but warned her the bugs/problems with dl09, and explained a few ways to get around some. She was so excited that the job I was supposed to be taking was second shift(which I didnt want but in my situation was not going to turn down) well she started playing around in her computer and moved some stuff around and got me first shift :D first thing I told my wife was hah being a mobile geek pays off sometimes.

But I guess my whole point in the rambling is its unbelievable how little some ppl know about their device. She was highly educated, very smart with computers, but didnt even know phones could get updates. That just amazes me.

I think simply rooting, removing a little bloat, and perhaps a 3rd party launcher will do little to truly affect the functioning of a phone. If it hard-locks with only doing that, it's likely it would've locked up still stock. I had a friend's Fascinate start locking up, not hard-locked, but just with really long hangs and pauses for a while. Wasn't a task manager or memory related issue, much to my surprise.

Rooting actually helped her fascinate, as it has mine. And it's certainly helped every droid X I've played with. (get rid of blur and CityID and the Droid X is a blazing fast phone, even back when it had 2.1)

Yeah lets get 2.2 before we start the 2.3 talk. I have to imagine GB is months off from Verizon/Sammy. The good news is on the dev side is they are already building GB and once we get the .32 froyo kernel it should be a slam dunk

Yep. That's when I think us super geeky folks and hacker types will really start loving the crap out of our fascinates. I'm especially excited for that time. Partly since my sister still has her fascinate, and now my dad and brother have them, too.

You see my post on last page about car docks? Do you know if thats added to this version or will it be in v5

My bad I'm jumping posts and getting lost :p
Yeah I dont know if it already in this or v5. I think you saw but jt came out with his own v2 an hour after kaos did. So im still on jt v2 now. Whoever gets BT to connect will be my next likely. They really are equal at this point

Totally depends on which you prefer aosp or CM? Each one is about the same. So you need to be able to live without BT, Camera and MMS. YouTube, Pandora, ESPNRadio and some apps like that as well.
But if you can live with phone calls, 3G data, wifi and SMS its good to go

Yea I didnt mean to post that in here I thought I was in the pk thread :p thats y I said I was lost haha

Not a bad idea it seems

its my understanding the way ota's work are they check your system to see if it is update and has the required verizon files in place...any tinkering will either fail the check or you are on a leak, you show as being up to date so you wont pull it

if you pass the check for not being up to date and your in the particular wave the ota is available to then it will give you the download for the most recent file...not the next one that was available for you

(of course if you remove the update/upgrade files in your system its a moot point)

I'm assuming you mean I'll have to go without that stuff with the current 2.2 builds. If you had to guess which one of those I couldn't do without, it would actually only be the camera. Just have kids and you'll understand! I love that the Fascinate takes great pics and even has a flash. Definitely prefer that to extra internal memory.

Now I'm assuming with the 2.1 builds, even clean roms like JT's, you can still use full functionality, and even restore the stock apps I need from my Titanium backup. Is that still the case? Thanks again, Saps for the tips, btw.

Back on topic, looks like some T-Mo users are getting their Froyo. I actually like that they can use Kies for their updates. Some call it "have to use" and here most of us call it "get to use." Lol. Such a different mentality about the same devices.

Anyways, this comment I saw following a Vibrant 2.2 post further presents evidence that I no longer need to be tied to Verizon:

I’m glad to finally have the Wifi Calling feature that T-Mobile said they’d have “in a month or two” when they sold us these phones back in August.

The reception on the Vibrant is so horribly horrible that it’s practically useless without Wifi Calling.

The places I go largely have WiFi, such as dad's place in Wyoming and my mother-in-law's in Montana. In fact, WiFi calling is a feature that is important enough that it could definitely play a major role in swaying me from one carrier to another. But again, T-Mobile is also NOT getting the Atrix.

WHY WHY WHY did it have to be AT&T???? I HATE them.

Edit: Meanwhile, look what Chris Burns posted:

Chime back in with what you think his take on it is. You can guess mine.

I think that WiFi calling is so important to tmo because of the relatively poor coverage they have comparedto the other major carriers

I could go off again on another MOTO rant but it does no one any good.:)

Here's hoping a super awesome HTC comes out soon or the sgs2 with no rfs and a current OS launches in late q2

Your moto rant would be justified because of their locked bootloaders. But they still provide more timely support and updates in the US than any other Android phone maker, including HTC - coming from a former Eris owner. I will say HTC seems to be doing better of late, however. They still don't have a device that is even close to as appealing as the Atrix right now. No one does yet.

very true. although the galaxy s 2 is supposedly going to be announced on 2/13....and if the rumoured specs are true....

it ll be a monster phone with crappy carrier/oem support :o

There are 2 types of OTA. Full and differential. Full doesn't care what is in there currently. Differentials need the device to be on the previous build so that the differential plugs in/updates correctly. If you are not on the latest, generally, they push the updates in succession, which is why some folks will see multiple updates.

interesting info :)....are differential the norm?

In regards to Verizon or any company knowing about certain updates..... At AT&T when a update for anything is released. We find out on the tech side and on the customer service side...the day it happens. Just like iPhone 4, on the customer service side, we knew nothing, until Apple announced it then our systems updated. Most of the "update" software whatever is also not considered to be a "big" concern. Its a warranty issue if somethings wrong with the phone, no concerns on an update, just send refurb. Most companies will concentrate on training their employees to know about the BIG stuff, like plan changes, policy changes, coverage/network changes, then the phones details & troubleshooting, then any minor details like updates (which is likely just an email). It's not a major surprise that VZW knows nothing about 2.2.

Differentials are desired, but not always possible. builds within a branch, such as 2.1.x and other fixes that are not a major revision, can be differentials. 2.1 -> 2.2, full payload.
suXor droppin the knowledge:cool:

This was just posted the page before and confirmed as the DL09 update, not Froyo.

No that was a different link. This is a new one. It is dated today 1/24. We haven't seen this yet. And it says "Froyo froyo froyo" all over it. Someone do a system update check, I can't because I'm running jt1134's Froyo lol.

no update

Well, sorry about that folks. My boss has a fascinate and I stumbled across that article. Didn't mean to get anyone's hopes up.
