***Official Samsung Fascinate 2.2 Speculation Thread***

I'm so pissed off at both Samsung and Verizon. Samsung for imposing their idiotically unnecessary TouchWiz that is almost certainly holding up the show and Verizon for locking me out of my phone's settings so I'm forbidden to delete three screens of deactivated trial apps and use BING to search.

Here's my philosophy on phones, or really any piece of hardware I own: I paid for the phone, it's MY phone which belongs to me because I purchased it, therefore I want to run whatever software I please on it and how dare anyone suggest that I can't!

I've gotten my phone rooted and installed ROM manager, but there are no instructions anywhere on how to get ClockWorkMod running with a Mac (all instructions are for Windows, and they involve downloading drivers and a bunch of crap that I don't want to partition my Mac and dual-boot in order to fail at). ClockWorkMod has a built-in option specifically for Fascinate but as far as I can tell it simply doesn't work. Since the day I purchased this phone until now I have encountered nothing but frustration at how inadequate Google's management of its ecosystem has been. Google should force carriers and manufacturers to meet certain deadlines for their users when it comes to releasing updates or else revoke their licenses. I think that'd clear up the custom UI/crapware issue pretty neatly.

Now, keep in mind, while I personally don't like TW at all, I know several Fascinate owners that very much like it. That is a matter of personal preference.

My beef is that it feels laggy compared to ADW launcher or Launcher Pro, which folks made on the side. How is it that a 3rd party can make a better running launcher than the company that made the damned phone?? That's what I don't understand. And without any added bloat or lag to the device, you can even customize these other launchers to get the feel and scrolling style you need for yourself to be comfortable using your phone.

I guess it's just as well. Gives some of the little guys a chance to make a buck. Which I'm happy to pay for the work they do. I paid for LauncherPro Plus on my DX and continue to use it on my Fascinate. I've used ADW.Launcher on other people's phones and they like it a lot too.

Some of the customization can be overlooked, but there's NO EXCUSE for the sluggishness or laggy feel that most experience in TW at some time or other, even when they still have some free memory on their phone.

Don't forget, the people on this site, and other Android sites, are in the minority. The phone is setup to please the majority ... and the majority could careless about bloat ware or if you can mod it to your taste. They more then likely bought it because they like the way it looks; and for the bloat ware ... they just don't use it, so could give a rip if its taking up space or memory.

Me, I like it ... I like that I can get in there and screw things up if I want. The update would be nice, but I'm not going to stop playing with it. Even if it does show up next month ... who's going to be running stock after a week with it? :)

WELL. I've been on jt1134's Vanilla Froyo since release and I just went back to regular old DL09 with all my stuff and rooted today, and it sucks. It's slower and stuff just doesn't work as good, not as good as a PERFECT version of DL09. So I'll be going back ASAP. After some sleep though.

ugh, I'm so tempted to root just to make my phone faster. It's getting really sluggish as of late and I can't connect my phone to my PC because when I try to unmount the device, the card corrupts... Hopefully 2.2 will come soon and will make the phone faster.

well 2.2 is out, if you root :)

Saw on XDA that they recommend holding off on wireless tether. jt suspects some kind of snooping built in to that 2.2 kernel. Hmm ... we may have to wait for a workaround on that. If it snoops for the wireless tether app, it probably gets popular wired tethering apps, too, like PDANet.

So far looks like everything's working, but I haven't seen word as to whether video has been enabled on it yet or not. "buyer beware ..."

afaik its the 3g hotspot app that you cant hack to use or it ll be detected...regular wireless tether shouldnt be a problem...but im not 100% on that

I DL'd it but it looks like a pain to flash.
Root
CW red or green
Maybe Odin to keep from booting
and then flash leak?

I have too many phones to support at work and keeping them all straight is silliness.

Its actually pretty simple. As long as you have any clockwork on you can flash on the rom and then flash on the new cwm and thats its, assuming you are on the right radio. If not the radio flash in odin takes just seconds. Seriously though its no more than 10 minutes to go from bone stock SF 2.1 to the froyo goodness

So... I just rooted my Fascinate for the first time and slapped CWM, then FroYo on there for the hell of it (I was scared shitless that I bricked my phone about four times during the process lol). So, I suppose I'll give a little review for those of you who are considering upgrading to this dev released ROM:

The Look/Feel
2.2 on the Fascinate is darker. It's no longer composed of extremely bright (and also battery draining) colors. It gives it a more "serious" feel, if that makes any sense. Apps now have a badge representing the number of notifications; i.e. the messaging app having the number of unread messages you have. Improved notifications bar: allows you to turn off cellular data and lock autorotate.

Performance
Definitely a performance improvement from 2.1. Boots on in under 20 seconds. No lag experienced when scrolling/zooming, even with multiple widgets on multiple screens. No bugs encountered as of yet. Vibrations are noticeably shorter (possibly leading to increased battery life?)

Battery Life
Definitely better than 2.1. Most likely due to some of the reasons mentioned above: darker UI, shorter vibrations.

Things I think might be changed but am unsure of...
The display appears to be higher resolution. I don't know if that's what the effect is when FroYo is coupled with the Fascinate's screen or if that's just the darker UI. (looks like it)

The effectiveness of Flash
I finished downloading Flash 10.1 from the market moments ago. From what I can see... it's not doing anything. I can't go and watch videos/play flash games on websites. Is the mobile version of flash watered down?

If there are any other questions, I'll be glad to answer them. (Also, if you want screenshots, you need to give me a good screenshot application for root users lol)

you have to enable plugins in the browser...and sites not optimized for mobile viewing arent gonna be that great anyway...especially flash games not meant for a touchscreen

Somebody see if they can configure a second exchange account. 2.1 will simply go to the existing config. 2.2 should start another one.

Questions for you guys. I'm very new to the whole Android world, and I am not technical in the slightest bit. I've had this SF for about a week now and I want the 2.2. I see that the unoffical version is out and can be installed if you know what you are doing. Should I attempt this or just wait until Verizon comes out with it? Remeber, outside of turning on a computer and checking my emails I'm clueless with computers. Also, if someone is in the Indianapolis, IN area and would be willing to do this update for me for $$ let me know!!

Do not update! You are not ready for this level of hacking. Just be patient until the official version comes out from verizon. Should be about a month.

lol, ok, that is pretty much what I thought, but I wanted to check first just in case it was actually pretty easy. Thanks!!!

Yeah, I'd hold off. Installing this leak is a bit more complex than just rooting and customizing your phone with the regular 2.1. If you're just getting into phones and customizing/modding them, start with 2.1 rooting and modding, as there is a WEALTH of support threads, step by step guides, and folks like me and others who have rooted a bunch of Fascinates and would be more than happy to help you out. There is definitely strength in numbers, and the numbers out there using this leaked 2.2.1 just aren't high enough yet for someone just starting. :D

I definitely recommend rooting and customizing a little bit though. This phone can take a lickin' and keep on tickin', when it comes to software foibles.

Yep......
