The GPS uses no power if left enabled. Even when apps access the GPS it uses virtually no power. The app itself is what uses power. Don't run GPS apps and the GPS will get no use. I leave my GPS on all the time and see no battery hit from it.The bug that bothered me enough to switch back is an issue with the GPS. I've detailed it in a couple of threads on XDA, in short:
- the first time you enable standalone GPS services you have to "accept" the warning it gives you
- if you do this, it works great until you turn GPS off and reboot the phone
- once phone is rebooted w/ GPS off, it will not turn on again via the notification bar (it says on but never sees any sats) until you go back into settings-->Loc&Sec and check the "standalone GPS services" box and accept the warning again
- then it works great until you reboot the phone w/ gps off again and the cycle continues
I verified this with SC 2.1, SC 2.2, and stock EB01 ROMs, all behaved the same. My SC DL09 doesn't have this problem. I also noticed that if the phone was left alone for a while (charging overnight) this same thing would happen w/o a reboot but I didn't experiment with that very much.
the GPS is VERY fast and strong when it's working, but I never leave GPS on unless I need it, and rebooting the phone each time I want to use the GPS isn't going to work for me.
That was the killer. Battery life was also notably worse w/ EB01 as well. With nearly no usage it would lose >10% within the first hour or two.
And yes I cleared data, cache, dalvik, and battery stats between each ROM load.

...words...
Anyway, maybe, just maybe it could be that Samsung really does care about their products and the user experience and just wants to get this update right the first time. From what I understand it's not that the company is just being lazy, they're probably actively working on tweaking 2.2 for the Fascinate and other devices so that when it does come out, crybabies like some of you on this thread wont throw a temper tantrum and blame Samsung for poor customer service when you can't figure out why your battery life sucks after the update. It seems to be a no-win for them, so my guess is that they're going to err on the side of releasing a stable update that they know will work on the majority of their devices rather than catering to the very small percentage of users who piss their pants when an update is a few months behind other manufacturers.
I'm bored so why not...
If Samsung cared about their products and user experience, they would support their products. Froyo has been out for nearly a year. Are you telling us that it is not reasonable to expect a major company to commit a small portion of its very substantial resources toward releasing a quality update in a timely manner? HTC and Motorola have both demonstrated this capability.
I, and I suspect many Fascinate owners, really like the phone but there are problems that should have been addressed a long time ago. The fact that Samsung has either made no/minimal effort attempt to rectify these issues lead many to believe that Samsung doesn't take QC issues seriously and will not be repeat customers. Not to mention that the phone they are minimally supporting is their flagship device. Its hard to build brand loyalty this way...
The fact that the Samsung Galaxy S 2 is on the way and if we use the past as an indicator, its reasonable to suspect that further support for the first Galaxy S device will be scaled back or ceased.
If I'm a whinny customer for the above reasons, so be it.

Oh.. heck, I don't know. I guess I just can't muster up the sense of entitlement needed to agree with that fully.
I'll try again later if my battery runs low or something.

What part of my post are you getting a sense of entitlement from?
interesting, haven't tested that before. perhaps I will try EB01 again and just leave GPS on all the time, but my the behavior I describe is still a bug that I hope will be fixed when (if?) they finally actually release froyo to our devices. The GPS uses no power if left enabled.
