a small minority of fascinate owners got lucky and seem to have functional gps on dio1...i cant give you a percentage but it seems to be pretty low....most cant get locks in under 5 minutes until they move to dj05

well i do have gps status, and it dl's agps data, maybe that helps

I was part of that ultra minority ;) the DI01 gps which worked

I believe my wife is in that group too. Multiple times we've been traveling and I'll use GPS Status to remove AGPS data and will fire mine up looking for a place. While I'm waiting, I'll use my wifes to look for the same place (no previous *tweaks* done) and it'll lock WAY before mine does. In fact, I usually just stop mine and use hers

They can call this update "YouEatPoop" for all I care as long as it fixes any of my few annoyances of the device (GPS, lag, bottom buttons, etc)

JUST FIX SOMETHING SAMSUNG

IMO there was a day in the history of AMERICAN industry where these issues would have been a "show stopper" and delayed launch of the product -- those days are long gone however.

I think we all lie to ourselves and convince ourselves that these issues are "minor" or "unavoidable".

The fact is we PAID for the device INCLUDING the software that comes on it. We PAY for the service. As consumers, we have done and continue to do OUR PART.

Agreed. The touch buttons and GPS are a huge issue.

I thought the touch buttons were fixed with the last OTA update ... I wouldn't know firsthand, because I haven't installed it. I have learned by now where my buttons are and it's not a big deal to me, provided I'm holding the phone right side up! :o

I noticed something about the GPS. If my GPS is on already for a while, and I load navigation or google maps, my location comes right up and I start navigating right away. If I load maps/nav first, then turn on the GPS, there's that delay. Once the thing connects, it really works well.

I have discovered a way, that at least with my fascinate, works to completely eliminate that delay. Now that delay for me has never been more than 1-2 minutes, and sometimes there's no delay at all. But when there is a delay, and I load that GPS signal strength app (forget the exact name), it instantly connects. I pop back into nav and I know right where I am. This so far has not failed to eliminate any delay whatsoever. And this is a strong indication to me that it's a software thing. It seems almost as if the GPS needs to be "awakened" by something, and for some reason nav and map apps on this phone don't seem to do it quite so successfully.

I've never had GPS issues where it pins me in a different location, as some have reported, so you can add me to the list of folks pretty much satisfied completely by the Fascinate's GPS performance. It always has my location dead on once it's "awake", and has been as trusty as any Garmin I've ever owned. In fact I much prefer it because of the satellite overlay. I have ALWAYS wanted a GPS that does that. Who in the world knew I would end up buying a cellphone for that purpose. I certainly never suspected such a thing.

But when google maps and google earth were back in beta and being tested and added to and improved upon, I always said to myself, "Gosh, I wish someone would just make a GPS that used google maps/earth and would do a satellite overlay. Imagine being able to see a field on your GPS, and then looking out and seeing that actual field right there in front of your eyes!"

mine, when i tested it...never took less than 5-8 minutes...and sometimes longer to lock when on dio1....good thing i didnt need it much :)

Can you find and post the name of the app you reference?

I too have never had a problem with it pinpointing my location to within about 15 feet. Then again, I live in the middle of fields.

EDIT:

Is it THIS ONE: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-chartcross-gpstest-zjAp.aspx

Funny thing... I didn't even KNOW there was a GPS issue with our phones. one of the FIRST things I did when I got mine was fire up the GPS and check out google navigation. Locked within seconds and navigated my way to walmart (test run lol).

It wasn't until probably the 3rd time I tried to use the navi that it simply would NOT find a signal. I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited... nervous that it was BROKEN and I would have to return it.

Then I got online, found this place and figured out it was a COMMON problem. I was pretty furious at first since we had put off buying a garmin or the like for MONTHS (my doing. My wife wanted to get one, I just kept telling her to hold off till we can get new phones) because I knew it would be on our phones. So Navigation was/is a big feature for me.

Any idea if this Jan 10 update, if it is not 2.2, will possibly fix the dock issue? Is that something a maintenance release can fix or is that particular problem a deeper issue and something only an upgraded OS can fix? GPS seems to work fine for me, i know the buttons by heart now, LauncherPro took care of the Bing situation...I WANT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC THROUGH MY CAR DOCK!!!!!! Sorry, just venting. I love the phone just hate the lack of support, well not even that...just the lack of communication on why its taking so long. I can wait patiently if I'm given a reason why.

I really doubt it will fix the dock issue. It looks like this is going to be dl09, which is a crap version of dj05 that a lot of the root crowd is running. I think for the dock issue its going to be in froyo.

I bought my phone in November at Costco. I just tried to get directions to a place and it worked almost instantly. I live on LI NY.

YEP! That's the one. It seems to wake my GPS up and lock on right away. Don't know why, but it never fails, on the occasion that I need it.

I wouldn't get a garmin now if I owned this phone, which I do. Our Garmin Nuvi was a high end unit a few years back, and it's served us well, but now we both have android phones and prefer google nav to virtually everything else out there. And a 4" Super AMOLED screen is a force to be reconed with as far as GPS units go. It's visibility in your car should rival any GPS out there that has an LCD based screen in it. It will have better contrast and much better viewing angles, and very similar battery life.

For the Love of All that is Holy, please please please fix the signal strength issue on Monday....That is all I want RIGHT NOW. 2.2 would be nice, GPS would be nice, but having my phone with 10-50% time without a signal is miserable for my battery life.

My wife's Eris, 0% time without a signal as same locations

Two major issues with my Fascinate:

1. The voice quality in a loud vehicle or room is so poor that the person I am talking to can not understand me.

2. Occasionally I will have to pull the battery and wait because the screen will not come back on with the button. Makes all the sounds, but acts like the screen is off or all the way down.

Otherwise a decent phone. Miss my OG Droid.

Just picked up an OG Droid yesterday to play with. Running Froyo and it fixed all of my issues with my SF (2 calendars, bluetooth autosync w/ car, and most importantly, I can use my bt in my car to make calls and not have it fade in and out! Deciding whether or not to drop my SF on eBay and hang out with my D1 until iPhone drops.

To each his/ her own....the iphone is a great device if you want a solid out of the box experience with little customization,,for me that doesn't work, but for many others i could see that being the case

I came from the iPhone to Android in July. After the debacle that was the Droid X 2.2 wait/fail and now this, I almost miss the "just works" and locked down experience of the iPhone. If it wasn't for our fine devs, I think I would have just paid VZW my ETF and moved on by now.

On the other hand, while I don't mind paying for things to make my phone work the way I want (ROM manager, etc) I also paid Samsung/VZW for that same experience. This whole thing just has me really frustrated. Add in the fact that the 1/10 update (IF it arrives) has a 95% chance of being "meh" at best, and I'm really at the end of my rope, so I understand where he is coming from.

i completely understand the frustration felt by many :(

and im sure many android users will switch the vzw iphone come february or whenever it drops, which is fine...as im sure many wanted it originally anyway

for me though my fascinate/other smartphones are more a source of fun and entertainment then communication so most of my consideration goes into the ability to mod and customize it when i purchase it.

im sure ill change my tune on this at some point, but for now thats where i stand

I didn't want to make a new thread... but considering all the complaining it still seems like a great phone esp when hell freezes over and it finally gets Froyo... Would you recommend this phone to someone today? I was looking to get one.

It is a great phone and even if a patch was released tomorrow that would fix the issues (GPS being at the top of the list) I could not recommend this phone to someone due to Samsung's performance. The pace of patching and updating is glacial across all carriers and communication is non-existent. The only way my next device will be of Samsung manufacture is if Google is responsible for maintenance and updates (Nexus device).

If you are a rooter, which from all the posts you have I'll assume you are, then yes I would recommend this phone. With a few tweaks its an amazing device. As long as you can live without flash till froyo gb w/e comes and don't use a dock its great.

I always root as soon as possible. and I have never used a dock but whats wrong with it?

The docks will not work w/out at least froyo. Thats why all the people that argue that nothing is coming not even froyo are wrong. Samsung isn't going to throw themselves into a class action lawsuit for selling products that cannot be used.
