Sure!! The special case is you walk into Verizon with the phone you've had for several months and a really large wad of cash. Hand them both and choose any phone you want!

I purchased my Fascinate in November and I feel that I should have waited a little while longer to get my hands on the Bionic and all these other new phones witnessed at CES. Plus, it seems Motorola is a more reputable phone company...

I know it's an underhanded question, but does anyone know any loopholes or special cases in which you can immediately reselect a new phone of equal or better quality after holding your current phone for months? (what about with an extended warranty?)

I switched to my Fascinate after a Droid 2 for three months. I had continous problems with "certified" replacements, after the 4th phone, they gave me a brand new Fascinate.

I was so excited about getting it, and then after realizing how many things I was missing out on, I went back today after 12 days with it and got a brand new Droid X as a "30 day exchange policy." Cost me the $35 as a restocking fee, but I'm back in heaven with all of my apps now.
 
I was checking this forum looking forward to the update. I bought my phone in October and while I like to have the latest and greatest I am really happy with this phone. This is my first experience with the Android operating system and maybe I would miss what I don't know what I could have with the new OS but I can't complain. My phone has been stable compared to my BB Storm that I traded in. I used to have to do a battery pull daily with my storm.

I'm looking forward to the upgrade but all in all, I would have bought this phone again even knowing how long I had to wait for the upgrade (if we ever get it).

If the OS was buggy I would not be a happy camper but that's not the case.

I got this phone today, was a special for $50 bucks. Looking like a better purchase already!

Ok I guess that equals it out then, but I am at mother-in-laws house and only have 1 bar. So that pushes advantage back to...saps ;) but I'm so addicted I deal with bad service to give help :D
 
I bought my Fascinate on December 22. I called Verizon today to inform them that it's coming back within my 30 days, and that I'll be pre-ordering an iPhone.

My gripes with the Fascinate are as follows:

- I'm on my 3rd one in 2 weeks. The first one wouldn't play YouTube videos, at all. The second one froze up and went insane on me. No, I didn't root it. I'm not a "power" user. If this is happening now, how many problems am I going to have down the line?

- I was promised the Froyo update by years end when I bought the phone. I understand, it's not going to make the phone THAT much more functional, however, the general lack of support is disturbing.

- Compared to the 4G iPhones that I've used, Android phones seem to have a somewhat hesitant UI.

- The Fascinate has NO visual text / SMS notification alerts. Not even an LED. Seriously? I know, I can use NOLED, but should I really have to?

- Media sync doesn't work. At all.

- Let's not even mention the GPS. I don't care if Monday's "update" addressed it or not.

- Bing. Seriously? What was I thinking when I bought this phone?

- The iPhone won't have 2 pages of bloatware applications that require root or jailbreaking to delete.

- I own a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I absolutely love both of them for their simplicity and consistent functionality.

- Long term support, Sammy vs Apple is a no brainer.

I'm sure there are a few other issues that I can think of, but, I don't have to go on. My phone is going back Friday, and I'm pre-ordering on the 3rd.

You're in the right place to get help with some of those gripes.

You know, one of my lines just came up for an upgrade. I could snag an iPhone 4 on VZ for either my wife or myself. If I kept it for myself, I would give her my Fascinate. It rarely has those GPS problems some people report. The GPS worked fine stock. It worked fine when I rooted. It continues to work fine with an overclock, undervolt, and with custom kernels. The times when it "sleeps" and simply needs awakened are very rare. One thing that might help you is to just keep your GPS on most of the time, or at least a few min. before you intend to use it. Mine gets a faster lock every time if I do that. And once it locks on, it never has my location pegged in the wrong location. That's a problem I've NEVER had with my fascinate, notwithstanding all the tinkering around I do with it.

I watched the promotional video for the new iPhone 4 on Verizon's website. It really has some things that I could see myself loving. The slim form factor for one. The super sharp display for reading would be nice, as I read quite a bit on my phone. At least 1-2 hrs every day. I read the web, my calendar, and eBooks frequently. Boy oh boy is that iPhone screen great for reading. Out of all the screens I've personally tested for long term readability, eye strain, and text sharpness the iPhone is #1 with a Droid X as a close second. The EVO is also excellent to read lots of text on. My SuperAMOLED screen is simply not as sharp for reading lots of text.

But I would miss the Fascinate's screen for SURE in broad daylight, especially in Idaho where we get lots of bright, reflective snow that covers everywhere the eye can see for almost half the year! Neither the iPhone 4 nor the Droid X are as readable in those conditions, and there would be several times a day where it would be a little difficult without squinting or shielding the phone to simply place a call or see who was calling me. The glass on both the DX and the iPhone 4 reflects more than SuperAMOLED simply because of the way they are constructed. The pure black to bright white contrast is OUT OF THIS WORLD on the Fascinate (and all Galaxy S phones), not only contributing to readability in difficult conditions but also giving it the BEST viewing angle of any phone currently on the planet.

Other things I would miss include:

1. Titanium Backup to SD. Why? Let me explain. Smashed android phone? Pop the SD card into your replacement. Titanium backup puts it right back how you like it quickly and simply. Smashed iPhone? Gotta hook it up to your computer and run iTunes. Sorry for the inconvenience and more difficult restore method.

2. Sync everything with google - supported apps, including calender and contacts. This is wonderful. Another thing that automagically just comes back onto your new android phone with a simple sign in. No computer required.

3. Google maps. I'm addicted to google maps. I've used some of the best Garmins and other brands of GPS units. Google maps is just about exactly how I would make a GPS program/platform if I had the choice. In fact, I had this idea a long time ago when Google Earth was still in its early beta. Obviously google had this idea, too. Now that we have phones that can crunch the numbers quickly, and networks that can support the data, it's damn near PERFECT for navigating around. You get google's world leading search capability with one button push. Results instantly come up. You can call what you searched for, navigate to it, instantly save it to favorites on your completely customizable homescreen.

4. SD expandability and backup: The SD card saves eBooks. Many apps save data to the SD card. This just gives you one extra way to back things up, share things with others, take more video with you on long trips, etc. If I bought the iPhone, I'd definitely shell out the extra $100 for the 32GB model.

5. Video and photos look INSANE on the Fascinate. They difinitely look better than the iPhone. This is where SuperAMOLED becomes the ultimate bringer of doom against all other competition (at least until the NOVA display or whatever from LG comes out, so I've heard ...)

6. Click and drag: videos, photos, MP3's. The samsung supports an awful lot of formats and containers for video playback....

I could go on with the things I'd miss about the Fascinate if I went to the iPhone. Maybe it's perfect for you, and there are certainly things about it that would be perfect even for me. But there's too much I would lose. It sounds like you've already made up your mind, but the Fascinate certainly has the potential under the hood if you'll give it more of a chance.

De-bing it and Google-fy it for sure though. Both of those things are relatively easy, don't require rooting, and get you back to google navigation and search (with 3rd party launcher - which probably feels smoother than stock touch wiz anyways ...) If you don't have the luxury of the time to set it up how you want it, then I understand why you'd want an iPhone.

Apple really did the right thing with it, and continues to do so. They cater to what the masses would want. They set it up how they feel most people would want it setup, and honestly, for millions of people it works, and also saves them the trouble of doing it themselves. I can fully understand why people get the iPhones. And there's always jailbreaking.

But I'm hooked on the Google experience now - especially maps, contacts, and calendar. And I really love how I can make my android phone REALLY AND TRULY MINE. No iTunes required. Heck, most stuff doesn't even require a PC once you get going. I can flash ROMs, different kernels, different system fonts and startup screens right from my SD card with a few simple reboots.

The iPhone is ready to go, out of the box. Again, I'm not a power user. I lightly browse the web, I do email, I do mp3's. I play the occasional game.

I enjoy and agree with Apples philosophy of minimalism and simplicity. I couldn't be happier with my Mac Pro or my MacBook Pro. Before that, I was the proud owner of an iBook G4 and a PowerMac G4.

I guess I'm just a fan boy.

I was going to suggest the incredible, but it sounds like the Iphone's form over function is for you then.

And thats a fine personal choice and the very much is a market for you since frankly you truly do represent the masses
