Root OH BOY oh boy OHH boyyyyyy HI!

argedion

The TechnoFrog
Ok get this NEWB HERE :D

So new I haven't even gotten the phone yet. Its on its way should be here before Monday. I see there are several methods for rooting , s-off, and yada yada yada.

I have lots of reading to do but in the mean time what methods do you feel best and why? which is easier and why? Will any of these be obsolete by the time I get my phone? Is themeing pretty much the same or very different. DTa2sd needed? ported? (Oh Yeah I did my homework on the phone i just asked people in the evo forum first person to answer was pretty much my decision :smokingsomb: ) Is Twrp the only recovery and any of the woes like we saw with the OG EVO? Why oh Why someone please explain why that little crappy Muppet elmo is popular? He is a worthless waste of good material. CAN THEY FILM HIS DEATH ALREADY? Last question for now. Should I root immediately or play around with it for the entire 14 days before I cannot send it back?

Oh yeah one more thing. I want to be treated like Norm and have everyone acknowledge me when I enter. IF you do not know who NORM is then may Early ban you :D

There are 0 issues with Regawmod to auto run HTC DEV and put a custom recovery (TWRP), SU, and busybox on the device.

There is a small issue with S-off that some people soft brick their device, but there is a solution for it that works. Read the warning in the OP and its suggested to try the linux method so that just in case you soft brick it you have a working linux machine for the soft brick recovery.

S-OFF requires root to run and if you don't want to go near HTC dev you can use the 1 click method to get superuser access without a custom recovery with S-ON

And TWRP 2.1.8 is solid, and preferred I think.

Personally, I gave mine a full week of stock, unrooted use.

Wanted to pull my hair out, but felt it was a safer approach to ensure that I didn't have hardware with that lemony scent. Do what you think best.

All Norms are welcome, but I have a reputation of restraining Cliffs, unless they buy the beer. Lma0

Well Postman always make me nervous

With the massive internal memory, DTa2sd isn't even close to necessary. You start off with more space than most people ever partitioned their sd card.

I heard some people have issues with CWM, but TWRP is solid. And the zip queue feature is very handy.

And I vote to root it asap! Totally risk free.

you're such a diane.

topic! even though I did it, I'd hold off on the s-off for a bit unless you really, really hate the htc warning on the splash screen. there's been some people on xda saying that random bootloops after fresh rom installs might possibly, however unlikely, be related to the panda s-off

I had to mess with regaw's one click method all day to get it to work, but that was my pc and the drivers not being loaded right or something.

I lucked my way through the lazy panda s-off with zero issues, during or after, thankfully.

You might want to mess with it a few days to see how it works stock. I saw you were getting the otterbox, I have the defender. It makes a huge difference. the phone is just too slim and slippery for me otherwise.

A class 10 sd card is a big plus. I can move a nand from internal memory to the card in about a minute and a half with it. Don't need to though, just wanted it to be quick if I did.

I felt nekkid w/o a recovery and a nand...

I was going to wait for a week or so too but I ended up doing the Zedomax root after about an hour of having the phone so I could use root explorer, system tuner and ad free. Then I was going to just use the phone like that for a week or so and I ended up doing the lazy panda s-off 2 days later.

What can I say? It's a sickness!

I didn't really want to flag the device with the htcdev unlock knowing that I would end up running lazy panda eventually anyway. I just took the plunge and got through it with just one soft brick and it worked the second time. It was a piece of cake.

I will say I didn't see much of my family this past weekend though. I felt like I was cramming for a final again. lol

So I've been reading all I can, but still want to clarify; rooting with the Zedomax method does not utilize HTCdev and, therefore, does not void the warranty, right? Before jumping into anything, I want to make sure I have a way to completely reverse it with no ill effects (using the RUU). For now, I mainly want to install some root only apps just to hold me over.

Bingo. So far as I know, exactly.

Confirmed at XDA - the RUU removes the tampered indicator on the bootloader screen.

The superwipe also "optimally formats" the partitions, so you'll need to make a change to the recovery so it doesn't undo the formatting when you restore. Simple as checking a box

There is indeed a superwipe. I'm not sure who made it, but same concept. I always use TWRP to queue up 3 superwipes then my ROM, just in case.

Well I am impatiently waiting until Monday. It wont be here till then been doing a bit of reading but also a bit of getting ready for it. I've also written a guide for my Blog and will be posting it soon. I have been doing some reading on the rooting process which seems to be much easier than the revolution way I did which was easy enough. I am thinking at this point to go ahead and root it as soon as I get it that way I have nothing on it to loose. Also it will give me access to root apps I've already purchased. Then there is the part of me that says atleast give it the two weeks to make sure there is no hardware issues that will require you to return it. But I think I will go ahead still. We'll see I will have to play with it for an hour or so before I decide. However first thing I have to do is set up the OG for the W.I.F.E cause if she not happy I certainly wont be. :( I went through all my ROMS and KERNELS that I had for the OG and didn't realize I had gathered so much. :D

Which AOSP ROM seems to be the one that is 1 step better than the rest? I also understand no KERNEL source is available yet correct? Sense ROMS which one is a step ahead of the rest? Are all ROMS based on ICS? Last but no least well for the moment anyways :D Has anyone had any issues connecting the LTE to Linux? I've heard that there were some changes there with ICS?

There isn't an aosp rom that's ready for prime time quite yet.

I've enjoyed MEANrom on the sense side. There are def many others though. Mikey seems to out out an update just about every day for MEANrom with the newest mods.

Correct, no source yet
