Root One Click Root For The Desire?

I've recently started exploring the possibility of rooting my Desire. A combination of the device's low internal storage capacity and a bit more freedom in general has lead me to this conclusion.

However, I'm not sure I have the balls or patience to follow one the guides which seem to involve a lot of technical stuff.

I'd basically like to be able to store all my apps on the SD Card and have the ability to remove some of the bloatware. Everthing else can remain the same with regards to HTC Sense etc.

I've read about these one-click rooting apps, and these seem like something I would be more confident doing - eg. less chance of me making a mistake etc.

Do they work? If so, why do people opt for the longer method of rooting?

Also, what ROM would suit my above requirements.

I am currently using a HTC Desire on T-Mobile - running 2.2 - the device also contains T-Mobile bloatware as I got the phone as an upgrade from T-Mobile.

Hi JohnnyBravo1000, have I seen you on hotukdeals? The name sounds familiar .... anyhoo ...

I rooted a couple of days ago using Unrevoked, it was easier than I expected it to be. I was extremely hesitant to risk ruining my Desire, but the lack of app space was quite frustrating. I downloaded the Leedroid rom from xda, it's an HTC Sense rom with some additions.

Edit: My was phone wasn't branded, so your rooting may be different.

Thanks for the response, mate. You may well have seen me around on HotUKDeals and a few other forums as well. :D

How are you finding your phone now as you have rooted? I think my hand is going to be forced with regards to rooting as constantly managing my apps and storage space is rather annoying.

Like yourself, the prospect of following a long and (for me, anyway!) complex guide is a little daunting! :D

Glad to see you set up the partition for apps to SD etc. Was that easy to do?

I Rooted my HTC Desire with UnRevoked v3.21, it was as painless and as easy as you can imagine (my HBoot was 0.83) , and the i flashed the LeeDroid v2.2f Rom, it also went as smoothly as possible, and it is a very fast an stable rom, i think it is the best choice.
 
Initially I tried to partition my sd card using Minitool Partition Wizard Home Edition, but although it appeared to have partitioned it just didn't work correctly. I tried that method because I wanted to make a larger 1gb partition, I settled for 512mb using Rom Manager from the market.

I can't quite remember the steps I took because I tried all sorts of things. I'm easily confused.
 
I've tried to partition using minitool a few times. Just makes a mess. No substitute for gparted live cd.

Yes, thats a fairly easy guide and the ones i referenced when i rooted my phone as well. I - like you have found it frustrating with storage on the desire so shortly after i bought my phone (about 1.5 months in) i rooted, and running teppics stock froyo rom with my own additions and haven't looked back since. everything is running more snappy and i can say battery life is a little better as well.

If you're the JohnnyBravo that i know from another forum ( shack / cave) then i dont think you'll have any problems....

Im very new to android too & followed the tutorial that danfrance linked to ^^

I was very worried about doing it too but i decided to go for it (After noticing how easy Eris Ed made it sound) & it took a matter of minutes to do & i was suprised by how simple it was. I've had no regrets either, lots of room & a good choice of roms to play with.

Once I'm rooted, can I use my phone as normal until I flash the ROM of my choice?

Is it easy enough to revert back to what I am currently using etc?
 
You can use it as normal once rooted. You'll just have super user access and clockwork backup.
 
Using Unrevoked to root is really easy *but* you need to make sure you have a few things set up first, as mentioned in the guides. I was very concerned at first and wanted to fully understand all the steps involved and the problems that could occur before I started. Personally, I created a Word document and made a list of each step, including links to software/drivers that I would need. The more I read, the more I understood. When I actually rooted it was something of an anti-climax and turned out to be easy, but I put that down to good planning. I was running the official Orange 2.2 update on a locked and branded Orange handset.

As dinaro said, rooting doesn't change how you use your phone. It gives Superuser access and allows you to install ROM Manager and Titanium Backup - both of which are very useful for flashing a new ROM.

It feels really great not having to worry about internal storage after flashing LeeDroid. Now have all apps installed and free storage is currently 70mb on the phone and 250mb on the SD Ext3 partition :)

Also, when it says to make sure HTC sync is uninstalled, does this mean on the PC or on the phone?

I don't have it on my PC, but I'm starting to think it meant on my phone. As nothing seems to be happening when I'm trying to root!
 
Well I'm totally stumped. I think I've followed everything to the letter.

Yet when I come to run the unRevoked program nothing happens.

When you run unrevoked is it just sitting there seemingly doing nothing?
Also are you using windows 7? as if i recall i had to run it as admin for it to work.
 
I think I've done it.....

I had to install HTC Sync and then uninstall it, leaving the drivers behind.

It then seemed to root when I clicked the .exe file.

I assume it's worked, as I've got a little ninja fella and superuser permissions on my list of programs?
