Optimize your Droid Eris battery life (READ THIS)

No, you could still send/receive messages with Mobile network off.
Well I just tried turning off mobile network and even with wifi on it won't send out a picture message until i turn mobile network back on and resend, but ill try again tomorrow to see if I get a different effect. I'm just saying since I thought I had read somewhere that mms requires some kind of mobile network

Thanks guys, I shoulda known that. My father was real big into R/C flying, so big that the memorial tattoo that I got for him is of his favorite plane :) but, I can't exactly get advice from him anymore.

Anyone care to clarify the rumors of an extended life battery being released soon?

I already purchased one from Seidio. They have 2 flavors to choose from. One that requires a larger back cover on the phone, and one that doesn't.

So I guess it's safe to say if, theoretically, you were sent a picture/video message you wouldnt receive it at all if you had mobile network off?

Picture messaging (MMS) requires the data to be turned on.

Regular text (SMS) and voice will work if you mobile network is off.

The 1750 is a nice battery. I've been using it for a few days now and i can make it through the day with moderate use and end the night around 50%. I SMS all day with some MMS thrown in. GTalk is always signed in and I use it often. Mobile network stays on and Google background sync services are on. I browse the web, scan barcodes with the Amazon app and so forth. I also use the MP3 player and Last.FM app at the gym and while I drive.

I got my eris almost a week ago now. And some minor tweaks have resulted in what I consider excellent battery life for the features I have enabled.

I diabled the notifications for the OEM SMS and am using Handcent SMS. I did not have a problem with the OEM I just liked handcent.

I have wifi set to never turn off (even when the phone goes to sleep)

I have the mobile network always on

GPS is always on

I have 2 email accounts set up on this phone and have them set to check every 2 hours. (The yahoo account wont check over the wifi because I dont have the yahoo mail plus, so it can only connect and check over the 3g network)

I got rid of that ATK I had(I actually had an issue with it causing my email to force close all of the time)

I left the auto brightness on, and have a battery widget running. I lowered the sleep to 30 seconds from 1 minute. I also have the facebook to only check for friends updates every 24 hours.

I take it off the charger at 6 am and head to work, use the phone as an mp3 player for a 30 minute drive to work, and then use it at a high moderate usage through the day, using SMS, and phone calls, and checking and sending email, looking for and downloading apps. Also Playing with the GPS and looking at the radar (had a storm coming in). Also using the ring tone trimmer to make some new ring tones.

With all of this my phone lasted until 11pm until i got the 15% low battery warning. Finially at about 1145 or so I put it on the charger until 330am, it is now 715 pm and my phone has been off the charger since 330am with light moderate usage today and battery is currently 50%

All of this being said, I think I am getting pretty good battery life out of this. And this is the OEM battery. I have not bought a larger battery, as I dont see a need.

Thank you, After back tracking and reading pages 7, 8, 9 and 10 I found the links, and they were only a few posts ahead of mine :/ Thats what I get for replying early LOL

Last night went I went to bed my phone battery was at 9%. I turned it of so it wouldn't die over night. I just woke up and turned it on and my battery charged it self to 20%. Idk what happened.

@mattjphoto: It just sounds like the sensor in your phone is out of whack, mines does the same from time to time.

However, quick question. I have GPS, Wifi, and Mobile Network off when I went to bed. The battery drained itself 10%. Upon looking at Spare Parts, it says the Android Operating system was on for 2 hours. My active time is about 20%, and I've turned off pulling for everything but mail, which does it hourly.

I live in an area with poor service (0-2 bars on average), would this be a probable cause of the 2 hours of uptime?

I still can't figure out what affects my battery life. With basically the same use, some days it can be 50% at the end of the day(around 10pm for me), and some days it will be drained by 5pm. I decided to go ahead and order the seidio--hubby is planning on getting the eris when he can renew his contract next month, so we can share the seidio as needed.

Also, some of you might be interested in knowing that Amazon.com has the 1750 seidio battery in stock for $41. Mine is on the way!

Quick question.. probably a dumb one... but when conditioning your phone for better battery life when you get your new one, is it better to have the phone off when recharging or can you leave it on??

Actually I can't seem to even turn if off while its charging... so dumb question... I guess what I was asking is it going to affect the conditioning of the phone if you are playing with it while its charging??

5. Turn Mobile Network off when not using it (settings>wireless controls>turn mobile network on or off) (if both this and wifi are disabled you will not be connected at all to the internet. the only thing you will be able to do is make/recieve phone calls and send/recieve sms mesages, this will give you tremendous battery savings though)
.

Thank you very much for these battery saving tips! This one seems to really do the job, I went to bed with a full battery and woke up to a full battery! I turned off wi-fi & mobile network. :p

I would suggest leaving it alone while it fully charges for the first time. When I got my Eris I played with it while charging and my battery drains every couple of hours, I read somewhere on a website to let the battery fully charge before messing around with it to train the battery. Im not sure if it really makes a difference but I can see how it would so its worth a try. Also what I just did last night was turned off the Mobile Network while I was sleeping and it kept my battery at full over night when usually it drains during the night if I would leave my Mobile Network on. To turn off the Mobile Network while not using the internet just hold the End key down and it will pop up a screen, on the bottom it will say Mobile Network on just tap it and it will turn it off it will help ALOT! You will know if the Mobile Network is on if on the top of your screen it shows 3G its on, if its not there its off. I hope this helps.

"1. Multiple Charges - It could only help... i do notice that when i do a "partial" charge it seems to make the battery last longer then on a full charge. I dunno, sounds like the whole thing where you're actually hungrier at lunch time if you had eaten a big breakfast than if you didnt eat anything at all..heh. Regardless, it seems the more you throw it on the charger the happier it is than if you just do a drain and recharge every day/night. Sounds obvious..i know."

As I understand the tech: Li-ion batteries will benefit from an initial "training period" of a couple cycles of full charge to complete drain, as well as an occasional repeat of this "conditioning" (every month or two). This helps the battery retain it's limits, max and min. They DO have a "memory", I have tested this.

The tough part about being as an#l as I am about treating a battery right is that when not stretching the limits of the battery, the Li-ion battery will have a better long term capacity if kept between 20% and 80% of it's full charge.

I think most people are fine with the occasional conditioning of the battery for maintenance.

I highly recommend the Seidio 1750mAh replacement battery, but treat it right or you'll have gremlins taking more than just your socks.

I am very new to forums in general, so I hope I "quoted" properly, and thank you for all the help guys and gals!

ghaaa!
How do I quote the "right" way?

My Eris is still awake 100% after the messaging fix, so could someone please list the other apps that also have this bug? I know it's been answered before someone in the gazillion posts in this thread, but I don't have the wherewithall to search them all!

TIA

2 weeks with the phone and still charging my phone 2x a day.

A few texts, maybe 3 calls, browse Facebook for a bit, check out the forums here, and the market a few times...

This battery is dying waaaaay to fast. I've charged it this morning and took it off the charger 20 minutes ago; sent 3 texts and changed my wall paper, and the battery is down to 94%!

I only have The Weather Channel widget running, Digital Clock and the usual apps that run at startup- Messages, Browser, Mail, but I killed the useless ones like Footprint, Voice Dialer, etc.

Brightness is down to like 30%, timeout is set to 15 seconds.

I really don't want to have to buy a new $69 battery just to be able to use my "Smart phone" or have to turn off Key features of the phone, like Mobile Network, etc.

I wonder if anyone actually tested the battery life before releasing the phone! LOL.

Still love it though!

I agree that you should not have to worry about battery life.
With the OEM battery unless I put it on a charger mid-day, it would be very low by evening.
I bucked up and bought the Seidio 1750 battery and I don't have to worry about the battery at all any more. I just put it on the charger when I go to bed and don't think about it otherwise.
HTC should have a better battery to begin with. Getting the 1750 let me stop worrying about if I had enough charge to last the day.

Make sure your GPS of off and the weather channel widget isn't polling for information. Those weather apps usually try to find your location, draining the battery faster.

Download spare parts and check the CPU cycles and partial wake usage categories. That should tell you what app is constantly running.

Just got the updated Spare Parts and there's a new feature called Activity/Process Management and you can choose between Aggressive and Normal(Defualt). I guess it will end tasks and manage memory more quickly. It warns you of doing this, of course. I enabled aggressive and will try to report back any findings. There's also ads now... :(

UPDATE: First observation, it has to keep launching Sense... deal-breaker. Back to default on that one.

Noticed that it killed sense too. I wouldn't uninstall just leave it on normal. I emailed the dev. Still waiting on a reply
