Root Optimus V gaming with overclock...

I have to give many props to the developers who put out the Xionia Rom. http://forum.androidcentral.com/optimus-v/58893-rom-stock-virgin-mobile-xionia-kernel-beta-2-a.html I can now use Reckless Racing and seemingly every other game at full speed with no lag. I bet my new Optimus V can handle just about anything. But, it was a major pain in the butt. All of the instructions are scattered, so here's a quick overview of what I learned yesterday. I in no way came up with any of the following instructions. I am not great with computers, so it took me all day to figure it out. Refer to other posts to download files. They are easily searched or found. If typing in commands looks too hard for you, don't do it. You could definitely break your phone.

1. Root your phone
Install Android SDK (update SDK with updates)
Install Java Developer (not runtime)
Install Super 1 Click
Download and install LG driver App (set to Singapore & English, then install USB drivers)
Plug in phone
Start Super 1 Click (shell root phone, wait for acknowledgment)
Hit your start button, type CMD, open a command window and use your DOS skills
Type the following:

cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is (mine for example is C:\android\platform-tools).
(After entering the next line, adb shell, you should have a "#" prompt, if instead you see "$", SuperOneClick has not been able to gain access to your phone. Go Back to step 3 and try again).
adb shell
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /system /system
exit
adb push su /system/bin
adb push busybox /system/bin
adb shell
cd /system/bin
chmod 4755 su
chmod 4755 busybox
exit
adb reboot

Once your phone is rooted, install superuser from the Market.

2. Flash Nandroid Recovery

Download two files, unzip both of them, and place them on your SD card
The files will be in the root of your card
Download a Terminal Emulator from the Market, pick a free one
Open the Terminal Emulator and type in what the post says

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5 /system
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5 /system
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-thunderc-v-1.2.0-GNM.img
reboot recovery

Your phone will reboot into flash recovery mode, click reboot
Now install the Xiona-VM.zip in folder called custom_roms (don't unzip)
restart with Power, Vol down, Home button held to load recovery mode
go to flash from zip and search for the directory
if Xiona-VM.zip does not appear hit the back key, do it again until it does
Now flash from Xiona-VM.zip

3. Install SetCPU
This is the best app. It costs money, but it's worth it.
Once SetCPU is installed, let it autodetect speeds.
Set the phone to 225mhz to 825mhz on demand.
BOOM! The phone is so fast now.

5. I didn't come up with any of this...I just had to figure some of it out because it's not put anywhere in an easy format.
 
I don't believe it. I thought Optimus V had a slow GPU at 200mhz with limited capabilities/functions. I thought that games just wouldn't work correctly no matter how fast the CPU. But dungeon defenders runs properly that's nuts!

I really wanted to enjoy a nice stock rom for once and not bother with rooting. Apps run really fast and I use opera mini so pages come up in 5 seconds. Those are really concise instructions thanks OP!

Does anyone know what the numbers are for? I can figure out most of the other stuff but don't know the numbers meaning. Just curious. ie

So I know that there are risks with overclocking your CPU on your computer such as overheating. What are the risks of overclocking your phone (if any) other than potentially bricking your phone while rooting?

The risks are always there, but as long as you're smart about it and stay within the phone's limits, you shoudl be safe. Same applies to PCs. I have had a q6600 overclocked to 3.2ghz for about 3-4 years now and it still runs perfectly fine.

On a seperate note, I can only seem to get the phone overclocked to around 700-725 before it starts rebooting constantly. Are there any other options that need to be enabled to get a more stable overclock in the 800 range? I mean, I am happy with 725 max as the phone is very snappy, but I love squeezing performance out of things. :P
 
Wow this sounds like a fun rainy day type project :D Awesome to hear it's possible. Maybe I'll wait and try it in a year or so, once I get bored with it. Right now I'm too happy with the phone to risk screwing anything up
 
Ive been running this for a few days I would stick with 806 too the battery life at 825 wasnt as good and I had a few lockups.

I switched to 806 and its been fine for the day today.
 
i just follow all the steps i rooted my phone, unzip the files to the root folder, but when i write reboot recovery, i reboot... but it stay on the LG splash and nothing happen, i have the two files and dont know what i am doing wrong, i try by typing into comand prompt and using a terminal emulator, but they give me the same results. the phone is working normal

I'm stuck here. I got it to reboot inthe flash recovery mode but where do i find this xiona-vm.zip? was i supposed to install it from somewhere or what? did i drag it from my computer to sd card earlier? should i find it on my phone with astro or what?

Nice, personally I prefer going with Zefie's CyanogenMod (Nightly). I can set min and max cpu frequencies, and also how the phone handles the frequencies. On days that I'm using it as an mp3 and phone, I set it to max 600mhz and 'power saver', no ill effect on Gtunes (my preferred music player) or calls. When I'm firing up games (Pocket Legends, max settings), or Netflix, I change to 825 (I have only had a reboot once, during a benchmark at this frequency) with 'performance' mode. Best thing is, you get these overclocking features FREE and upgrade your phone to Gingerbread (yummy). There is one downside, when making or taking a call, there's a chance the proximity sensor will bug, and your screen won't turn back on until you remove the battery. Holding the phone further from your face (which is healthier anyways) or using a Bluetooth or wired headset make this bug a non-factor.

EDIT/ Forgot to mention, at 600mhz with Power Saver and 3g disabled, 9 hours playing music only brings me down to 72-75% battery depending on how often I turn the screen on to change songs. /EDIT

My phone has gotten quite toasty, but no more so than when I've had it plugged in and running wireless tether downloading videos on my laptop (can't beat $25 for free temporary internet, even if it is about as slow as a really good dialup connection)
 
i am really surpirsed some many people are stable at 825MHz, my phone will crash at 787. I am normally left at 768 for games or 729 for normal use

I guess it can vary a lot due to manufacturing tolerances. Mine is very stable at 806, but crashes almost immediately at 825.
 
Your max overclock is going to determined by the CPU itself. There is some variation in the chip tolerances when it is manufactured. The manufacturer sets the minimum stable speed at 600 MHz. Due to variations, some can overclock higher than others. My phone can only get to 768 MHz with out reboots, but my wife can go all the way to 824 MHz with hers. The only problem is I can't get her to swap phones with me.
 
im super stable out 806mhz and im trying out 825 mhz with the setcpu stress test. been going for about 2 minutes solid.

I have found 825mhz to be able to run angry birds the best. Still a little slow.

Does anyone know how much battery overclocking uses? Is there actual number data like how much faster you run out of battery?

i'm supposed to press enter after every line right?
Well, after typing in"cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image' my phone says
"/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory"
I don't understand what this means? Should i skip past this and continue typing? I've downloaded both files and put the ".img" files on my sdcard's root, so whats's the deal? Please respond soon guys, I really want to overclock this phone :D thanks guys
