Orange UK 2.1 update news

People, people, if you really must have "all those 2.1 features" root your phone. Otherwise, just chill out. Besides, using a custom ROM is very easy, specially on Orange UK Branded Phones.

I got tired of waiting so rooted my girlfriend's phone last night using the guide here. Was pretty easy to do, it took a bit longer than it should've though since someone wasn't reading the instructions properly.....:o

Anyway, got 2.1 on there now, only thing that seems to be broken is Live Wallpapers, but given that they are a drain on the battery its not a great loss.

I am, I am!

Phone has just lost all signal (despite having full 2 seconds ago) and my spare Orange phone having full still.... Well, thats not going to help me get the update!

is anyone else bouncing off the walls waiting for some news today????
I was still following the same routine Saturday and Sunday, even though Orange and HTC staff were probably at home putting their feet up.

For the first time ever, I've actually considered the iphone (and it's lack of fragmentation).

At the risk of taking this off topic. So have I. Just because the fact that the Firmware update was released when they said it would be!

Come on orange!

Nooo, dont do it guys! Yes they're pretty and theres no fragmentation but there is no freedom of choice! Theres no customization or freedom unless you jailbreak! Android - you can change the way anything looks or works, and you can change your keyboard if you want to, you can do anything you want! Iphone - you do things how Steve Jobs wants you to! And theres nowhere near as much free apps!
Maintain the faith in Android - the 2.1 update must be imminent now for the Hero and like me you're probably due an upgrade in about a year - and by then Android 3.0 will be out and another sexy Android handset and it will be miles better than iOS!
Keep the faith people - Android all the way :-) (Admittedly not HTC - theyv been a bit shit but hopefully they'll get better! If the desire gets 2.2 then there will be hope!)

(This post may contain rambling...)

I didn't say I was going too, but I had thought of it!

I'm due an upgrade at the end of Feb. All I do know is though that I may well be moving back to samsung, provided they have improved build quality of phones since my Omnia I900 (issue was the digitiser, otherwise fine). I'd like to stay with hTC, but at the same time, I don't want to be dealing with branded firmware :(

The desire should be getting Froyo soon from what I understand, and that would be an option. I want to see what happens with the Nexus 2 when it is out though. Hopefully Orange will be able to do some kind of deal with me.

I do really like the hero, the only downside is the processor, and the silly looking base. Why can't it look like the sprint hero - Looks so so much nicer then the GSM one. The processor arguement for me rules out the Legend as well - Which won't be getting Froyo iirc.

I am hoping that samsung release a decent 1ghz android phone, with dedicated graphics. It would be sweet if they do, I had the omnia HD before, 600mhz processor with a dedicated graphics chip, the hardware was awesome, but the poor choice in using the symbianOS mixed with not being able to cope under my usage led me to the hero.

There are still a lot of things hTC need to learn from Samsung in regards to the sound quality, screens, etc. and I just wish samsung learnt from hTCs build quality!

I want a hybrid :(

My contract has a while left but after this debacle I'm inclined to agree.
I'm hoping the Samsung i9200 is out by the time I upgrade (Samsung i9200 Galaxy S2 Specification | Mobile Phone Blog).
But back on topic, any rumors for today? Possible times? I need something to be excited about today!
EDIT: And since the Nexus 1 has been discontinued today, is an NExus 2 likely?

Completely agree with both of you...that new Samsung number looks sexy!
The HTC Desire HD looks pretty special two - especially with the unibody aluminum case...but I know what you mean about Samsungs Screens - very nice. Hopefully HTC will catch up with them on that aspect. I'm not too keen on the Samsung UI though - its a bit wierd and theyr basically turning it into iOS. I really like HTC Sense.
And yeh I need some exciting rumours too...we could start one haha! Noon today!
But hopefully Richard H will get back to us soon with some exciting, reliable news.....

If that phone does indeed prove to be real. Sweet mother of Jesus! I want it!

I haven't heard any rumours today. I may be phoning hTC on my lunch, as well as orange, to hear the latest from them, if anything.

Surely someone has done this today? Anyone?

Well after Randys rant even if I did know something I won't bother posting it(unless it's actually downloading onto my phone!)

No news from Agent Orange, he's probably hiding under a desk somewhere in downtown Newcastle :D

They say patience is a virtue, long deep breaths, I'm willing to bet we'll see it this week, I know some people in Orange are very annoyed they didn't get it out before their rival networks.

E-mail received 10 mins ago....................

"Dear Doug

Thank you for your return email regarding the Android update.

I am sorry to learn that you are unhappy with the responses that you have already received and I understand the frustration this must be causing.

Unfortunately the reason you have not received a clear definitive answer to your question is that it is still in testing. As a matter of fact a spokesperson for Orange released this statement.

"The HTC 2.1 update will be available in the near future; we'll keep you posted on specific timings,"

I trust the above is of assistance and I apologise that I can not assist you further via email.

Kind regards

Mark

As "a matter of fact" I think they are pulling the wool over our eyes..............

Agent Orange has gone dark!

Last seen being chased by two cod actors with a tv ad script...sometime along the lines of "True Lies".

[Orange UK wishes that this certain agent had kept his mouth shut and not be so "Customer facing" about the 2.1 Hero update]

Just contact Orange, again, first lady I spoke to seemed rather annoyed with Orange due to the fact she didn't have a clue about the upgrade even existing.

She spoke to Technical Support as I informed here about the facts as I know them. Apparently, It is not going to be until the 26th July. A week today!

This isn't the first time I have seen this date quoted, It has been mentionned on XDA Devs a few times (Cba to find links).

So another week maybe then, a little bit annoyed by this to be honest... If I didn't have a warranty I would probabaly have rooted and installed a custom rom by now. And if I didn't have so many issues with phones in the last 9 months, I would probabaly have rooted and voided the warranty anyways!

(Hopefully I am not the bearer of bad news and someone will prove me wrong)

The thing that really annoys me is the fact that we get told nothing. If Orange just came out and said that this was rolling out on the 26th July from the start then fine. I'd probably be a little annoyed at first but I would be happy to wait. It's the fact that nobody at Orange can give us a straight answer that is really winding me up.

And that is precisley what I opened the conversation with orange with.

"Calling in regards to the Android 2.1

All,
Just received this from Orange UK. Still no positive answers to my original question re 2.1

Dear Geoff

Thank you for your return email.

I am sorry to learn that you are not able to update your HTC Hero handset to the latest Android 2.1 version. Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.

We are currently experiencing a large number of queries that have caused a back log of emails, making it very difficult for us to respond to you in a timely manner. Please accept my apologies for the lack of response and the delay you have experienced.

In regards to your query I would like to advise, as stated in our previous email, that it is not possible to advise of any estimated timescale for the testing of this update by Orange, furthermore, we can not guarantee that an update will be released at all regarding the HTC Hero as the updates that could be released may never work alongside the Orange branding on the phone.

The link that you were given in our previous response is for future use, so if an update does become available for your phone then you can complete the details and thus process a download. If there is not a download available then you will not be able to access this information to process from the Orange website. I will apologise if this information was not made clear previously.

Furthermore we can not advise when we receive the update from HTC directly and we can not confirm whether or not testing is being continued or whether it has failed testing and then we are waiting for a new updated version to start testing.

Remember, the 2.1 version may never be released on the Orange network if we can not get it to work along side your Orange branding within your phone.

I appreciate that this response is not ideal. However, I trust this information clarifies our position in this matter.

Kind regards

Andy

The thing that Orange don't get, is we aren't just existing customers, for the early adopters of the Hero, we are also due a new phone shortly.

But instead of making us want to stick around the Orange playground, their wall of silence doesn't help one bit.

Also, the fact there is no where on orange's website where I can drop in and find out info such as possible release dates, news of testing etc is also worrying.

As these phones are getting more complicated a higher level of support is required. Phones have moved on so much since the the mid 90's, you'd think the operators mind sets would keep up.

In fact they should embrace the very ethos that they are trying to sell us, a way of keeping up to date from your phone, should be adopted with levels of support.

Instead of tying up human call centre operators, just post one or two blogs on your official site.

#orange #fail as you'd say on twitter.
