OK I'll hold my hands up and say sorry guys, I passed on the information in good faith, I'd spoken to the tech guy a few times over the last few months and I believe he was telling me the truth when he said it would be today, hey he might still be right about the day but wrong about the time(covering my own behind!).
At the very least we all got a bit of excitement on a rainy Friday morning

Just tried to call Orange to give them stick about my problem which the firmware should solve and You cant get through for love nor money,
It states Orange as having a severe network issue and they hope to restore service as soon as possible, Could there be a link? or am I just dreaming?

I got a used htc hero that has an orange serial number but is unlocked. I bought in this condition and now am stuck cuz can't update it to 2.1. I did the rom update from HTC Hero - ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero (Orange) but still am unable to get a 2.1 prompt. I am really stuck with it. Please please help me as i have tried all i could and I really hope you could help me as i have spent a hefty amount buying the unlocked set. I purchased it online and did not knew about the orange problem. Please help..
The about phone page shows:

My phone did randomly restart about 11 and I got all excited but cant see anything new, just put it down to ghosts in the machine!
wouldn't be the first time
You will be able to update.... when the Orange 2.1 becomes available. The alternative is to risk the procedure outlined here.

And I had my phone lock up on me just after my last post... Again though, thats normal.... Funny though, I have returned a phone to orange because of it... Strange they all do them. I blame the amount of ram we have

I haven't seen any of these issues yet, I'm up in Norfolk and I've had good service all day, been texting my girlfriend as she travels from here to London without a problem. Just sitting here with various threads and pages auto-reloading to see if there's any news. *impatiently drums fingers on macbook*

I don't think we're getting 2.1 just yet - I would have thought Richard would have told us more if he knew it was today too.

I'm currently fine here in Cambridge but the network did disappear for a couple of minutes about an hour ago.
I spoke to Orange 2 days ago and they estimated 7-8 days until the 2.1 update is released, so we're looking at 21st July (ish). Of course, they may have just said that as a complete guess to get me off the phone. You may also then have to wait until they push the update down to your phone.
However, a friend with an unbranded nexus one forced his 2.2 update by going into the dialer, then typing in
*#*#checkin#*#*
As soon as you type the last * it'll disappear, then syncronise itself with google. Of course, if your phone is branded, google may ignore the OS update. Who knows!? My Hero had the sync icon for a good 20 minutes bu no 2.1 update. Oh, make sure you've got good 3g/wifi reception. One thing it did do though is mark mall my emails as unread. Wierd.

The only reason I knew i had a problem was if any tried to call me they got an engaged tone and texted instead.
I can call out fine, text fine and browse mobile internet fine.... but not receive calls- weird!
If you call 150 opt1 opt3 there is a recorded service announcement before they put you through

do you mean 2432546? in place of 'checkin' or is there a way to make characters appear in the dialer?

I think he means the numberic for checkin, as if you do that, it does disappear straight away. Not that anything happened on my phone.
