Otterbox case for the HTC EVO 4G LTE.

Ok, I'm reading this forum more regularly now because I think I'll be getting this phone. And I will need a case. At the BB where I'll be likely to make my upgrade, they only have the black defender. Is the screen protector included with the defender really that bad that it ruins the screen resolution and that it scratches so easily? Do I really need a screen protector with this phone?

Yes the screen protector is included with the defender. I'm not sure what the general opinion on this is but, in my experience with defenders over the past few years ( with different devices and this device) the screen protector scratches easily and it also takes away from the clarity of the screen. Since the defender does such a nice job of protecting the device you don't necessarily need a screen protector... But I use one just in case. ( zagg HD)

Depends on your environment.

I live where there's sand, one of the active ingredients in sandpaper.

Isn't a glass made that I've seen that can stand up to it, so a screen protector is not optional for me.

It only takes a grain or two of the tough stuff to scratch a screen.

I went with the Defender.

All screen protectors scratch.

If they didnt, makers would just make screens out of screen protector stuff.

It won't be if, just when, you'll be replacing your screen protector if you use one, regardless of how you come by it.

So it sounds like I might want to yank the screen protector off of the defender and somehow remove the glue to replace the screen protector with some other screen protector that allows the screen to be seen in its full glory. I love good quality displays and I'm concerned that the screen protector in the defender might not let the quality of the screen come though.

I looked at Zagg HD on the Best Buy website. Some reviews are saying that it covers the proximity sensor and that it isn't good quality. So I have no clue what to get.

Thanks

I'm easy, I like the screen protector on the Defender.

I have a Zagg on my OG evo, it isn't the HD though. The one I have protects the screen, but it is a pain in the neck to apply.

When you take the stock screen protector off of the defender the "glue" that holds it on is more like sticky tape. It literally peels right off no problem. It definitely distorts clarity no doubt about it. I have the zagg hd and YES it does cover the proximity sensor. I have had it replaced twice ( bc yes as EarlyMon said they all scratch :)) and both times it has screwed with the proximity sensor so before I apply them I cut it out. Which fixes that issue.

I am a mechanic by trade. So i have dabbled in everything automotive.. Including Window tint.. Which kinda gave me a leg up on the whole screen protector thing. But yes.. They are a pain in the butt. But once you get your technique your generally good to go. Then you have all your friends flocking to you to put their screen protectors on. Lol

I'm wondering if I should just get the Otterbox Commuter. It's thinner and seems to be great protection. My thinking with this is that it would still fit well in my pocket and it wouldn't have a screen protector to peel off. And yet it does sound like it's easy to remove the Defender's screen protector.

And I'm thinking of getting the Steinhill Oleophobic because it's a dry application, it doesn't distort the screen according to reviews, and the latest model has the cut out for the proximity sensor to go with the Commuter.

But will the Commuter be enough protction for me? Hmmm...

I had the defender case at first but after a week I really found the size/bulk of the case unusable. I ended up returning it to best buy and ordered a commuter case from ebay. Just went without a case till it came in. That being said I love this case! Having the rubber on the inside and plastic on the outside makes sliding the phone in and out of my pocket so much easier.

The drive to NJ is a bit far, but yeah, I'd flock right along with them. I've put on 3 so far. sometimes it goes great, last time I halfway messed it up just putting it on.

My screen is safe though! :)

OK, so I ordered the Otterbox Commuter case and the Steinheil Oleophobic screen. Also, I ordered a cheap Plantronics M bluetooth headset. I broke my Motorola 550x and I lost the one before that.

Now I need to find a way of protecting that bluetooth headset in my pocket. I can't think of a better way of carrying it around. Belt clips just don't seem to work for me...

So I should have all of this before the big day when I get this LTEvo on September 1 at Best Buy.

I wish I were more excited. Lots of stuff going on in my life now and I'm still waiting for BB to send my Photon back from repair. It's been over a week now... Grrr...

I had the Otterbox Defender on my 3vo and the rubber outter casing always seemed a bit loose. But when I got it for my LTEvo I have to say I am quite impressed, it fits really nice. The only complaint I have is that the holster (at least when I put it screen out) is a bit difficult to let the phone in there.

Yeah the rubber seems to be a complete new design. Mine has gotten shiny or stretched at all like my 3vo did. And yes does take a little bit of use to get it "broken in"

I also found that it made my Powe button a bit hard to press so I took a razor blade and took a hair off of the rubber nub and it has a way better feel now. I wouldn't suggest doing this unless you are very carefully bc if you take off too much you will ruin the fitment.

I have read where people thought pretty highly of Otterbox customer service because they got things replaced easily. Maybe you can prove them right too!

Thanks for the tip.

I'm not worried about that quite yet, but maybe I'll contact them just so they know its occuring. :)

They will ask you for a photo of the defect with a piece of paper with your name and date on it in the photo. Very painless. They don't even ask for proof of purchase. I just went through the process myself.

Hmm, I dont think I'll be able to take a photo of my phone in the case, when my phones the only camera I have.

I doubt the laptop camera would be high def enough to show the loose corners

Just take the phone out of the case and take a pic of the case. I hope your pulling my leg. Lol :p

So last night I noticed that the rubber flap where it protects the cable port had developed a small tear.

i called them up, the guy took my info, they are going to send me another outer cover. he asked if the plastic inside cover had any problems. It doesn't, or they prob would have sent me one of them too.

i asked if I would have to send the old piece back, he said if there was a prepaid envelope in there to go ahead and send it back, otherwise, not.

I read on the site where some folk might have to do so, and do that picture thing too, but the rep didn't say anything about it just now.

Totally friendly and easy to get along with. No asking for any receipts or proof of purchase or registration, just wanted some info from inside the case.

I'm impressed! :)

They really are awesome when it comes to replacements. I had the same rip. Emailed them. And they shipped a brand new complete setup in box. Didn't even need to return the ripped one. I love otterbox<3

Thanks otterbox!

Thanks otterbox!

Sweet, i'll be calling in the morning for the wife's case. The power cover ripped off 2 weeks ago and the rubber is somehow stretched out. I had it for about a week and returned it for the Commuter case. The strange thing is that my father has the Defender case like my wife does but his power cover didn't rip off, the case still looks like brand new and we got the cases all together at Best Buy the same day.
