Root Overclocking Noob. Please Help

I would like to overclock my phone to get more out of it but I am not exactly sure what would be a safe setting. I had previously had it at: min480 and max787 but my phone turned itself off overnight while it was charging and then acted kinda funky when I booted it back up, so I set it back to default. Also what exactly does the governor setting do and what should I set that to? Thanks for any help.

Try testing out different speeds. While testing never set to boot unless you ate sure it wont screw up you phone
As for governers they bacially set how you phone uses it memory
Like powersave will save resources in order to help battery life. If you look through the forum there is a post that describes the different goveners, also I would suggested going through a few pages to see if there are any topics tthat might interest you.

I run 480/787 InteractiveX governor. CPU's can vary greatly so what one person can get someone else may not. If you will read through this thread it will help you out I think. It has good info about overclocking.

The min. is where the CPU idles. Never take the min. above 480MHz this will cause overheating in the CPU and or the battery.
The best place to start is 768MHz max-480MHz min
Then take the max. up one setting at a time until the phone reboots. Then back down 2 settings. This is where you need to be for the best battery life and performance.
For an explanation on the governor settings go here SetCPU for Root Users

I've been trying out Interactive X since Atmazz last mentioned it and it does pretty good. That thread that he linked to made me curious and I tried this battery testing app last week with most of the popular governors for 2:00 hrs each starting at a full charge every time. I tried each at 729 and then 600 (min at default) then I compared along with Quadrent results for each, and for the best performance to charge ratio it looked like it was kind of a tie between Interactive X and on demand but looked like Interactive X had less fails, don't know what that is but.. I know that a battery test doesn't say anything really about real use and or using your phone for different purposes but it was still interesting. Smartass V2 didn't do as good (for this battery test anyway). Also, with both Interactive X and on demand the charge was the same after 2 hrs whether at 600 or 729. But if you're playing games or watching movies I would think you would use more battery at each oc level higher, but I don't generally need an oc for most of my uses.
