People Application Issue & Facebook Contact Sync

Hey all,

I decided to go with the Friendcaster method of automatically uploading pictures for my contacts. Most of my contacts have high res pics, few don't. I opted to have all of them high res, but hey, not too big of a deal. However, I absolutely do not like having 300+ contacts in my phone, especially when some of them do not even have a phone number. So, I went into the "People" application to manually remove all of the people I don't talk to, or don't have a phone number. After deleting about 10 or so people, my Galaxy Nexus dies. This has happened three consecutive times, once with 2/3 battery and twice with 2/3 battery while connected to my charger.

Has anyone experienced this issue, or is this a defect? Also, if there is a quick way of displaying contacts that only have a phone number and email rather than manually removing all of them, that would be great.

Keep in mind, I want to avoid rooting my phone. I got it about a week ago and am fully satisfied with Ice Cream Sandwich as of now, so I don't see the reason to risk bricking my phone...yet.

I could be wrong since I don't use Facebook any more, but I am pretty sure there used to be a setting in the Facebook sync that let you choose to only sync contacts with phone numbers.....

Also, you can setup the people app to only display certain contacts. You can create a group and only display those people in your contacts.

Well, Facebook and Google had a disagreement a little while back, so Google now no longer allows syncing contact pictures. However, the app "Friendcaster" allows syncing of Facebook contact pictures. The downside to it (besides the low res photos) is it pulls tons of people you didn't have before, most of which don't have phone numbers.

What I'm doing is taking all the people I don't want in my phone, and "hiding" them in my contacts list. It is a very tedious process because it takes about 5 or 6 seconds to hide a contact, and there are about 200 more contacts to hide. From what I understand, your method of putting people in groups is essentially the same. What I'm curious about is if there is a quick solution to this, but it seems there isn't (at least without rooting).

I also just tried a battery pull, and the phone hasn't died randomly yet. Only time will tell though if this was a successful solution.

Go in your People (Contacts) app, be in the center panel that shows all your contact, hit the menu button, and click "Contacts to display".

I had looked for this item before when someone posted about it, and I did the exact same thing and I swear I didn't see it then. So either I was daft at that time, or something changed in my settings that made this appear. But now I'm just showing my Google contacts and if they sync'ed OK with Facebook/ Friendcaster, then I see their photo and the FB information that is also sync'ed. This makes me muuuch happier.

I just forgo the high res and go with Syncmypix. It only syncs existing contacts on my phone. No pulling in 500 friends.

The easiest way is to go through gmail (on a PC browser)....open your contacts....create a group....then go through and add contacts to the group. Then on your phone choose to only display that group.

Great solution! That solved my problem! The only thing I can ask for now is high res pics, but if this is impossible then it's no big deal. Not having 500+ contacts in my phonebook is more than enough for now.

HaxSync will sync high res pics from your Facebook friends. It takes a bit of work, but the end result is worth it in my opinion.

Just got my Transformer Prime tablet with ICS and trying to understand the People app included.

On my other Android devices, phone and rooted Nook Color, i had the ability to link my google account and my facebook acct as well as my verizon back up sync. I could join contacts together if they were duplicated and it would display the Facebook pic and status.

On this tablet, when i do an Add Account and choose another acct type it adds fine but if i choose Facebook it just flashes briefly and no other screen is displayed to login.

So you cannot add Facebook accts in android any longer?

Thanks for your assistance.

I think Google and Facebook had a falling out and there is no longer a facebook account option. I could be mistaken as I don't use facebook.

I finally replaced Friendcaster with Facebook contact-sync and prefer it now. There's been speculation as to whether it's not included now because of a falling out between Facebook and Google. Or if it was just an error and it would be fixed in the next OTA update for the GNex.

But if new ICS devices aren't working right with it, I'm leaning toward the falling out. FB has been going with Bing/ Microsoft for a little while. It sucks that you can only pull up a Bing map on a FB event page or whatever.
