People complaining

Okay people, listen up!

Please read post #99 - it was made by our Site Admin so should be taken as gospel.

Now read the Site Rules & Guidelines and the Zero Tolerance Policy.

If, after this, anyone still feels the need to bitch and moan at other members for their opinions then they should have a bag packed in readiness for a short vacation to Banlandia.

Any questions on the above, contact a staff member via PM.

I have a tiki bar in Banlandia if anyone is interested.

I like my xoom and will make my final decision on keeping it tomorrow just have a couple more tests to complete with it.

I highly doubt that. I can give a Nook to my family members and the websites and they still would not be able to root it. Alot of people are not technically inclined (as I have a side business building and maintaining PC's). I also Root Android Phones and Overclock GPU's (for gamers). There is enough of a market out there that people are willing to pay for these services because they you know CAN'T do it themselves. I don't think I am that smart, I just know that there are not alot of technically savy people out there.

BTW - Getting people to understand and use ADB (or a command line prompt for that matter) is NOT 5th grade material. Sounds to me like YOU think you are smarter than everyone else.

U R correct :)

That said, the mod scene is growing, but a percent of a small percent is still small.

No they are not;) There's no legal way to distribute Google Apps & Marketplace with a ROM and as such XDA does not allow it (this is why deeper-blue does not include these two with his Honeycomb V4). You have to find the .apk's and install yourself (this involves using ADB to Push the .apk's).

This is where the majority of people get stuck. You first have to make sure that ADB recognizes your Nook Color via USB (which means that your PC HAS to have the correct drivers). Then you have to know how to use a Command Prompt and change the Dir to where the ADB.exe is located (this should also be the folder where the .apk's are located as well). According to some here this is all common knowledge and the majority of 5th graders know how to do this:)

Really? My G Tablet custom ROM's came with the market, and full fledged Google Apps...

Someone better tell all the people over at XDA... ;)

Ummmmmmm, you DON'T have Honeycomb on your G-Tab. You have Gingerbread. You CANNOT install Honeycomb (Android V3.0) on a Nook Color with Marketplace or Google Apps installed within the ROM. Yes, some GINGERBREAD ROM'S have Marketplace and Google Apps baked into the ROM, on the other hand, HONEYCOMB does not and thus you have to use ADB to Push over Vending.apk and GoogleServicesFramework.apk. There is a difference between Gingerbread (Android V2.4) and Honeycomb (Android V3.0). Hope you understand the differences now. As of right now there is only 1 version of Honeycomb floating around (deeper-blue V4 for the Nook Color) AND to use Marketplace and Google Apps YOU HAVE TO USE ADB.

Mulder is right. Android/Honeycomb needs an easy route to install Movies/Videos onto these HC devices as the iDevices have iTunes. Adding Movies to iDevices is very easy and takes minimal effort. I add a Movie to iTunes, connect iDevice, sync and watch, pretty simple. Hopefully Google gets some sort of Syncing method going that's as easy.

It needs more than that. Let me give you a real world example:

Last Nov.
My partner: "Honey, i got us a 4-day get-away to Yucatan tonight. Suprise honey,"

Me: "Oh really, lets go but I',m not prepared. Nice surprise."

My Partner, she then goes to iTunes. She downloads Samantha Brown's travel documentary videos on Yucatan for her iPad. She downloads Anthony Bourdain TV shows on Latin America. They cost about $2 each. She downloads a GPS maps for Latin America because we don't know if we will have Internet or not. She orders 2 Lonely Planet books (one from iBooks and one for the Kindle) while we were waiting in the Airport Lounge.

12 hours on the plane & waiting at various airport lounge, we got prepared for our 4 day mini-vacation. We watched various videos. She is not the type to go bit-torrent and convert videos.

That Sunday, I get a call from my job that the mail server is getting hacked from Russia. I go and buy a 3G SIM card. I cut it to fit the iPad's micro sim. Plug it in. I then VPN through a CISCO vpn and SSH into our servers and then look at the logs and block an entire network block from Russia on the firewall and deleted all the mail queue from spammers using iSSH and an X11 application on the iPad. I did this during the morning breakfast buffet at local restaurant. If that isn't magical, I don't know what is.

Not once did we charge the battery than entire weekend. We used it 2-3 hours here and there.

True Story.

The device like the XOOM needs to appeal to the newbie (my partner) and power users like myself.

As Frisco used to post: "I'd like to agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong."

It depends on what the end goal is. Apple sold the iPad at a loss initially but now that division is probably printing money. The iPad is still not a very attractive device to everyone. The Motorola Droid was as good as it got (for consumer smartphones) when it was released but it did not have the wide appeal. It still managed to save Motorola for atleast another couple of years.

If you make a device for everyone, it's going to suck. That is what democracy is about. Everyone gets their dealbreaker items covered, yet the end product is unbelieveably lame (like the UK. I'm only teasing, the way those folks sound when they talk ensures they will always get my vote no matter what.)

Sure, you can have a device with everything in it but then they are going to want even more for it (Like LG's new product.) Apple certainly should be able to get the price of all subsequent iPads down pretty cheap. They've got a pretty good supply chain in place. It shouldn't be much for them to make a new tablet. Motorola hasn't offered a tablet before, so it's going to cost them a lot more to get this rolling. That product isn't like anything they've ever made so they'll have production issues.

That being said, I do not feel that we need to finance any manufacturer's forays into electronics offerings. I am just pointing out that Motorola and all of the other vendors that haven't made a tablet yet have a bit of an uphill battle ahead of them and they will have to find an edge somewhere. That edge can come from not making baby products yet products that will actually advance development instead of siphoning money from the sheep.

I'm all for siphoning money from the sheep, just don't make my Xoom suck in order to do it.

That was a nice story but there's no way I would use someone else's device to handle my sensitive work activities even if I were sleeping with them.

Is this in the users guide? :o

Of course the AOSP Honeycomb doesn't... It hasn't been released on anything but the Xoom... And the Xoom has those apps.

Once it's released for other devices, those ROMs will have the google apps baked in

As of RIGHT NOW (this particular point and time) the Honeycomb that is running on the Nook Color DOES NOT have Marketplace and Google Apps baked into the ROM. You HAVE to use ADB to install both on a Nook Color running Honeycomb. Right now the only two devices currently on the market that can run Honeycomb are the Xoom (Natively) and the Nook Color (via Root). The Nook Color version of Honeycomb is NOT AOSP. It is coming thou.

The Nook Color Honeycomb is just a port of the Honeycomb SDK: Honeycomb for Nook Color released for download (update: video) -- Engadget

So, not the AOSP, but the SDK. Which, of course, does not have the market in it (Or google apps). They are trivial to bake into the ROM, however, and really do not require an ADB push.

Hell, I might rebake the ROM tonight and post it...

There is another way to get Marketplace and Google Apps onto the Honeycomb SDK for Nook Color: an excellent script written by XDA-Developers forum member jleecong that takes care of installing Market, Gmail, Google Talk, Google Maps and Contact Sync for Gmail in one easy go, without having to enter any ADB commands yourself.

Make sure you have ADB up and running, and your device recognized.
Download HoneyGApps v2 and extract the contents of this zip file to a folder on your computer.
Browse to the folder where you extracted these files and run the HoneyGAppInstall file

Wait, I'm confused. When I hook up my iDevice to my machine, it goes and downloads and installs iTunes for me? Hmm, never noticed that. ;) I understand the complaint that it doesn't come with the phone, but, seriously, what's the point of an *OPEN* OS if you *NEED* to have everything handed to you on a platter? I personally like the minimalist approach in that I can then go get what *I* need, not what some arbitrary corporation tells me I must have. Personal preference. If you wanna be spoon fed, iDevices are what you should be using. If you want choice and aren't afraid to get your hands even a little dirty, then Android is where it's happening. It really comes down to being that simple.

Very true, and an excellent comment. In the end, it boils down to consumer choice. For a phone, and probably a tablet, I like the open nature of Android and the ability it affords me to customize it however I want. However, there are many people who don't want to bother with this sort of thing. We live in a great society where great competing products exist, and consumers have ample choice. This is a good thing, as it pushes all companies to continually adapt and refine their product. In the end, we all win.

Yup. Some people do need the simplistic approach to getting tasks done. And who knows, as I said, Google could be working on something like that. I could easily see them pushing YouTube as a video rental service and having some kind of "cloud based" music service. Wouldn't that make things pretty easy and competitive? So, we'll see what they have cooking in the background. I can't imagine they're sitting there doing nothing.

I don't understand why people feel the need to have to justify their choices by belittling others' choices.

Too much anti-Android (anti-Xoom) and anti-iOS talk. I just read on Engadget that people are hating on Android users for finally getting flash. "May your battery life and performance rest in peace." Really? Is that necessary?

Why can't those anti-Android just move along? There is no need to have to justify your choice by putting down someone else's. I don't care that you got an iPad or other device, I hope it makes you happy, but no sweat off my back.

The same, though, goes to anti-iOS people. Let them be happy with what they got even if you don't think it's up to par or what not. Just do you and don't worry about the rest.

<steps off soap box>

Thanks for reading. I just find this issue frustrating and rather petty when all I want is some good info to read on. :)

I am here with my xoom because i'm anti i-OS and that's why I highly anticipated to xoom's release. No complaints except I can't put this darn thing down. Its killing my social life and gonna cause me to get fat. Note: I was anti apple way before andriod ... it's like apple on parole :-)
