Root permanent S-OFF is here!

Thanks Scotty...so this is something I should definitely flash...and are there any disadvantages?

none that i know of yet... other than the bootloader is the singlemost thing you dont want to eff up,since it loads everything else. so make sure you follow hboot flash rules: make sure you have a good charge,double/triple check md5 sum.

this will undoubtedly be part of alpharev/unrevokeds forthcoming root method.

i have been using their non-permanent patched version prior to this release, and had no issues with it either. if i thot there was anything unsafe about it,trust me i wouldnt be reccomending it so highly. but,it is new,and there are possibilitys of bugs,so if you want to wait a couple days or weeks to make sure youre comfortable,no biggie. but id reccomend doing it eventually(sooner than later ;))

it wont make your phone run any different, but picture this scenario:
lets say you flash what is supposed to be a rooted version of the next GB OTA in hboot. but come to find out files were mised up and its the unrooted RUU  both this permanent patch version and your current engineering version will flash the ruu.

the difference is this version will block the hboot part of it,so your s-off is safe. the old engineering bootloader will happily overwrite itself with the s-on bootloader, leaving you with no back door entry to reroot an unrootable GB ruu.

if you are still s-off,you just hboot or fastboot flash a recovery, then restore a backup, reflash a new rom,or whatever. s-on and youre stuck.

hope that helps clear up the biggest advantage. :)

Ok next question. How do you hboot or fastboot a recovery? This my first htc phone as well so I'm not familiar with this.

Someone on xda posted a flashable CWM. I'm on my phone and can't post it. If no one does by the morning I will. It's a good idea to save on your PC just in case. You'll probably never need it, but better safe than sorry.

+1
Never did stuff like this on the d1

i have flashed both the current clockwork were all using,as well as the kanged jcase 4.0.0.5. another option of course would be the team win recovery mentioned here: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/387293-alternate-recovery.html

both the jcase modded 4.0.0.5 and team wins recovery have a "boot to bootloader" option so no more battery pulls or letting the phone boot between rom and radio flashes :D

as worm said, hboot flasing youll download and do just like you did here and with radio files: doublecheck md5,rename to PG05IMG and let hboot update.

fastboot is a little more involved. youll put your phone is fastboot mode(the mode it boots into when you type adb reboot bootloader),opena cmd window, and type fastboot devices to make sure youre phone is recognized. you can then enter commands to push and flash the recovery, just like when you rooted. this is another big plus for this and for engineering bootloaders-the ability to communicate eith the phone via adb in fastboot. an s-on device will not let you do this. fastboot flashing can be invaluable in recovery situations when you have no recovery or OS to boot to. it has been used to revive a few "bricked" eris's

its not at all a bad idea to download your recovery of choice and keep it on your sd card or on your pc "just in case" :)

the ability to hboot flash recoveries and RUUs is the whole reason i like htc so much, and will likely not ever have something else. doing the same thing with moto phones involves rsd lite, and with samsung involves something similar called "odin"(i think)

Here's a link to the thread containing the flashable CWM recovery. It's definitely a smart idea to either download the file and keep it on your PC and/or bookmark the thread for future use.

Ahh, sometimes its so simple...i just didn't open up the zip and folder files to reveal the PG05img file. Cool idea for keeping s-off.

For anyone who's flashed this that has some experience in the Android world (scotty, dig, yeahha, etc) was it a quick flash? Reason I'm asking is I'm in a rush and have 50% battery, but thinking of flashing this and recovery back to back. Too ballsy, or should I go for it lol?
