Root (!) Phone Cannot Boot Up - Stuck at Sprint Screen

veshagh

Newbie
Hello,
My phone is currently unusable, I tried rooting my phone via htcevohacks.com, I got to step 36 and couldn't continue. I'm new to rooting so please excuse me if I'm not using the correct lingo. I've tried putting the "PC36IMG.zip" on the SD card but it won't let me update. I need to get my phone running as soon as possible, and need help. Please do NOT refer me to the "Rooting for Dummies" board as I've already referenced that page.

When I go to the white boot this is what I see exactly:

Welcome to our forum!
That zip you are trying to install....is that the recovery zip that you renamed?
I am not familiar with the evohacks procedure.
If that is the recovery zip, just be sure not to add an extra .zip to the end, and also be sure to put on the "root" (not in any type of folder) of the sd card.
When you go into the h-boot screen, (the screen with the info you typed),
it should read that .zip automatically.
:D
Feel free to ask anymore questions.!

The zip I got was from this forum, I've tried Clockwork_3.0.0.5 & RA 2.3 (not at the same time). I had renamed those zips to the name that was perviously stated and there was nothing on my SD card. When I'm in the hboot screen it won't read the zip at all, it either says error, or it asks me if I want to update and then tells me that the update can't be done.

Is there another one I should be trying?

I know you said not to... but I'm giong to link you to our 2.18 dummies guide anyway. I need to make sure you are using the correct files. I also and not familiar with evohacks but I know our guide works and it explains everything really well.

So it looks like you unlocked the phone, and are looking to get the recovery on it? You have multiple ways to do this. Refer to the quoted part of the guide I linked above for the correct links. This is very important if you want to do the PC36IMG method

step 2 How to get Recovery

here is a little more details on how to get a recovery onto your phone. there are several ways of doing it. you can use the fastboot command to install recovery or you can use the android flasher program and lastly there is the PC36IMG method. either way, it is pretty simple. i will leave the decision up to you.

various methids to install amon ra 2.3 recovery:

ADB command method
1.download amon ra 2.3 from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.extract the recovery.img file and place it in the android folder you created when unlocking your bootloader.
3.on your phone after you have unlocked your phone you should be in the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7)
6.enter command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
congrats!!!!!! you have just installed amon ra 2.3

android flasher method
Android Flasher, what is this and how do i use this?

well with android flasher, you can flash radios, your splash screen (that is what the htc white screen is called right before sprint's boot animation), and your recovery. you will need to extract the .img file from the .zip file. in this case i will show you how to install a custom recovery amon ra2.3.

so here is what you will need to do:
1.download android flasher from here:
AF Downloader
2.and extract it to someplace on your desktop where you can find it.
3.next you will need to download amon ra 2.3from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
4.extract the img.file and place it some where you will be able to find it.
5.run android flasher
6.go to the recovery slot and select browse and then navigate to the amon ra .img file
7.select it and then select recovery
8.then1 at the very bottom select flash

congrats!!!!!! you now have amon ra 2.3 installed.

here is the original thread for android flasher:
[UTILITY] Android Flasher 2.2.0.5! (12/12/11) - xda-developers

PC36IMG method
1.download the file:PC36IMG.zip
2.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
3.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
4.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
5.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
6.select recovery.
7.select backup and restore and select backup
8. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
9.now you can reboot.
10.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

The zip I got was from this forum, I've tried Clockwork_3.0.0.5 & RA 2.3 (not at the same time). I had renamed those zips to the name that was perviously stated and there was nothing on my SD card. I would go back to the guide on this forum, go to the "get recovery" step and go to the "PC36IMG method" step and use that zip....you do not have to rename that one...it's ready to go and is written for you purposes.

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html
So click on "show" under HTC Dev Method...then click on "show" under how to get recovery then scroll down to the PC36IMG method and use that zip....:)
remember, you do not have to rename that zip....

If he's got S-on he can't flash the recovery from hboot via PC36IMG. Gotta use either fastboot adb, or android flasher. Both methods are described with instructions in the guide.

If you get stuck at any point just post back where in the process you are, we'll help you get there. :)

You can, he just HAS to use the one linked in the guide. Captn Throwback edited it so it will flash in H-boot

*she ;)

I will try to follow the steps in a little bit, unfortunately I'm at work & my laptop won't let any external devices to load. I have my personal laptop with me but I can't connect to our network, so I'm waiting for my co-worker with a hotspot to come in. I appreciate all your help & will get back to you guys as soon as I can!

You're bound to get more "dedicated" help now that everyone knows you're female :p.

At any rate, if you have issues using the PC36IMG from ocn's guide, you can use this one, which is the original. I have issues using the one he posted for some reason.

EDIT: Oddly enough, I have the same issues with my original one now. I guess WinZip just sucks at opening zip files. Nevermind this post . . . nothing to see here . . . move along . . .

Alrighty then, so for reference this is the link I used to unlock my phone which I got stuck at step 38, my phone didn't say “LOCKED (OOW)” like the instructions said.
How to Root HTC Evo 4G on HBOOT 2.18 with S-OFF! | HTC Evo 4G Hacks!

Going off that, this is exactly what I just tried:
ADB command method -
Downloaded the "amon ra 2.3", from the link listed in step 1.
Extracted the files.
**Since my phone will not let me go past the Sprint screen, I can't just use my phone as a drive, normally. I went to 'Recovery', then to 'USB-MS toggle' so I can open the SD card on my computer. This shows up as just 'Removable Disk (F:) and is completely empty.**
I don't have the "android" folder in here because I never created one/probably got deleted, so I've created a new one.
I copied/pasted the "recovery.img" to the "android" folder.
Then, I disabled the "USB-MS" and powered off from the recovery menu.
I powered up again using the power+volume- selected 'Fastboot'.
Now I am stuck because I can't access the USB/SD without going into 'recovery'.

I am going to try the flasher method next because I know I am able to do that but unsure if I can complete it. =/ I really appreciate all the help!

Trying the Android Flasher Method
clicked the link from step 1, selected EVO 4g, was going to download but it wanted to download something called, "iLividSetupV1" & I don't believe that's what I'm supposed to download as it? Maybe I'm wrong, if I am I can go back and try this method but I'd rather be safe than sorry. :)

Hmmm...I dont know so I googled it..

ilividsetupv1.exe - What is the ilividsetupv1.exe ?

Some sort of executable file but is it safe? I really dont know.

Many of the free file hosting companies try to get you to download that instead of the file you actually want.

Good call on not downloaing that. There should be a different "download" button somewher with the actual file. You may have to wait 20-30 secs for it to show up.

They are sneaky sites

EDIt:

click SKIP AD in the upper right corner.

If not I'll upload it to my dropbox

Woohoo! I did something right! :) Sorry if I'm being SUPER descriptive, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Alright, moving on...
Downloaded the "AndroidFlasher" and extracted.
Downloaded the "amon ra 2.3" and extracted.
Opened the 'AndroidFlasher', got a screen that said "Android Flasher 2.3.0.0 - COMING SOON", so I just hit next.
I selected my device (evo 4g), selected browse, then selected the 'img.file'.
I noticed the check mark in the bottom right corner that says, "I'm already in fastboot", which is true so I selected that as well [hopefully that's right].
Then clicked 'Flash!'.
My screen then went to the recover menu, and the 'Android Flasher', shows as: http://i.imgur.com/rgFtD.png
Then I just hit finish again, it says 'Your device has been successfully flashed'.
Clicked exit, and then 'Reboot system now' from the recovery menu on my phone.

..........drum roll........

htc Evo 4G screen
too loud for my office Sprint 4G opening
and it's still repeating itself again, so I took the battery out so it doesn't keep looping itself over and over again.

Okay, what next?

I'm in the black & green screen, android system recovery.

This is GOOD! As long as you can get to the recovery you are going to be just fine. Remember that.

At this point in time I am going to suggest that you flash a custom ROM to get you up and running quickly. I am suggesting MikG because it looks close to stock but has been fully optimized and has added bells and whistles that just kick butt over the stock ROM. MikG is the golden standard for reliability so you shouldn't have any problems there. You will have to redownload your apps and sign back into google. It will be as if you just got a brand new phone.

Download link:
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?10338-MikG-v3-11-3-9-2012
download only the FULL WIPE version

Directions for installing:
Place MikG on SD card (keep it zipped)
In recovery, select wipe
wipe:
factory reset
Data
cache
dalvik cache
system
boot
sd-ext
sd-android secure

then go back to the main menu and select install zip
install from sd card
select MikG and install it. Your phone will reboot when it is finished.
