Guys, I'm a diagnostic automotive technician. 24 years of clients beat down and misbehaving cars have passed thru my careful hands and well trained brain.
I've fixed them all, when even the dealerships gave up or (as usual) don't have the faintest clue...
And I LOVE my Evo 3D!
I started with a beat up, used evo, running 2.3. I was a BB convert (memory issues made me throw up my hands and try android)
For a couple months it was pretty good. But every once in a while the touchscreen (digitizer) would ghost touch all on its own. I would flex the phone, lock the screen, wait a few seconds, unlock and use the pattern unlock and it would work great for a few hours.
keep in mind that I had a fresh 8gb memory card and it was barely used.
as time went by I would add more pictures, videos, audio clips (whatsapp audio while driving). Eventually it got to be ghosting more frequently....
Then I got ice cream sandwich. OS 4.03. And it was great. Phone was faster, only two apps available in the background at a time, so, running my ebook TTS app with the premium voices synthesizer would mean I had to keep switching back to it, when I was jumping all over the internet and app chat rooms, if I didn't want to lose my place.....
Long story short: its an amazing phone. Ultra fast processor, good memory management and overall the best phone I have ever used.... Apart from this weird ghost effect...
So, I had a couple hours to surf YouTube and look at replacement digitizers. And how to change them...
Read all the YouTube comments and BANG! One guy said the keyword that put my brain in overdrive..... Memory overflow!
Think about it. What's wrong with blackberries? Memory problems! The fix is to do a fresh OS reinstall or factory data wipe.
What about PCs running slow? Same problem. The registry gets full of garbage bits left over from app uninstallation... Best Solution, you reinstall windows and restore your critical info and keep it clean as long as u can. It runs like new for a few months.
Enter android. It's built upon one of the best operating system platforms ever conceived.
UNIX .....
So, I thought to myself. Could it be that simple? I held down home, to bring up the app switcher screen, swiped all the recent app icons to the left (that kills them)
Then I went to settings, storage, and cleaned out app caches, and ran the free up memory app (I had about 90% used memory) and then I tried out a few apps, checking speed. It was much more responsive!
I usually do a restart every day, because I'm a power user and coming from blackberry, u have to do that to be able to even get a little speed out of a blackberry. Android nay be fast, but it still has to keep track of an insane amount of memory handles to run everything.
Here is the kicker...... What runs ALL the time on an android, and u can never shut down? The digitizer interface! It's a multi-touch, hunk of glass, but the CPU has to track every touch, gesture, swipe,
double click, etc! That's a huge load. And to be able to be ready for anything, the CPU MUST allocate a large part of RAM to be able to be ready for what u expect it to do!
And what do we do? we surf, YouTube, play games, expect the gallery to keep track and have thumbnails at our finger tips for thousands of photos, and generally use and enjoy our phones.....
But when you have a massive memory allocation for all the stuff u love to do, and when we become power users, and start to really use our phones, we load up the memory so much, that the digitizer starts making mistakes. A reboot might help for a while, but the underlying problem is we are lazy! We tell ourselves, surely this powerhouse can handle all my apps, thousands of photos, emails, texts, video messages, Skype etc etc.... No it can't, but its sure a champion for trying!
Im a
Rogers Wireless customer and have crappy data speeds where I live. Great when I'm in the city, but at home it is slow and been noticing that sprint customers seem to have an inordinate amount of problems with their Evo phones. I also noticed on YouTube, that normally a sprint customer with good bars, can expect wicked data speeds... and yet tons of YouTube complaints in the comments mention that they have had up to eight phones, replaced under warranty.
high data speeds, are great, but you can fill up your phone with lots of junk in no time. that's why I think they would start seeing problems almost right away, with their new phones.
delete unneed photos, audio clips, music, apps, widgets, and remember to run memory cleaner wizard and reboot your phone once a day, before you call your provider and ask for a replacement!
sure u could have a glitzy digitizer (the glass part). but, I really doubt it. unless u sat on it, took it apart without clipping connects securely back into place, etc. try my solution for a while and see if it makes you love HTC again.
And a final edit, to add a final detail..
HTC sense is big. I presume its the theme that skins over the base.operating system... I'm still learning about android, but one YouTube comment mentioned rooting the Evo and running a mod pack called sense free or senseless. Which is supposed to remove most of HTC sense and make more room. And it worked for him.
Yet, many hesitate to root their droids, for fear of loss of warranty, myself included, and umm, well, its way out of warranty haha.
So, I will lovingly keep sense and instead use some common sense and keep my HTC clean, and see how long I can keep it running. The battery has virtually expired on me in so many situations and have it plugged in virtually all the time.
The Seidio extended battery on eBay I just ordered should fix that. It has almost twice the power of the stock HTC battery and comes with a thicker back cover and was only $20. No power user should ever be without a high reserve battery. But stay away from Chinese generic batteries. Stick with li-po and preferably the one made by Seidio but branded under a different name. It gets great reviews and I'll post my own her for the Evo fans!
Okay, off to speech shortening class
