Help Phone has mind of its own (possible faulty digitizer)

Have any of you guys happen to have noticable input lag? To the point where it might effect you playing a game? Cause I though about contacting Sprint. Idk if its a hardware or software issue. But this input lag is like unacceptable.

I'm not sure why but my phone just started acting up all of a sudden, like when i click on a app itll open then quickly shut down. Or when i try scrolling down my app list it'll drag me to the very top of my apps so im unable to scroll down without being pulled up. I've tried doing a factory reset but everytime i place my pin to reset it'll will show me the screen to "erase", but it will put pack in the screen to place my pin again. This is really frustrating  can someone help me with this??

Hi Boomerk4, sorry to hear you're having trouble. I do have the original Evo, not the 3d, but I know there are some great guys who do have it, you can try here:
HTC EVO 3D - Android Forums

You already did a factory reset, which would have been my first thought... the only other thing I can think of is maybe it's a hardware issue

Hope not. Welcome to AF, wish it was under better circumstances.

You might have to do the FR from the bootloader, did you take the OTA update for ICS, also if you want I will move this post to the 3VO section for the proper help.

@boomer,

moved your discussion here as it may be a faulty digitizer.

Are you using a case or screen protector?

are you the only owner?

is this a refurb?

is it rooted?

is a sprint branded evo or international?

did you remove the battery for about 5 minutes and re-installed?

I am the owner, im using a case, no its not refurb, and is rooted with the mean rom 4.5, sprint branded, and i have tried removing to battery for 5mins but with no luck

Question. Has anyone took their 3vo to a sprint repair center? If so was they able to fix a faulty digitizer? Reason I ask nearest repair center is a 45 minute drive and nor do they answer their phone either. Doing all I can to avoid replacing via insurance.

I've had my HTC for a few months now and just recently I've had this problem.

I've noticed in certain areas I touch the touch goes to the closest "live pixel". For example, on the keypad for dialing a phone number, when I try to dial 1, 2 or 3, it goes to the bottom numbers below or on the area above that, depending on which part I touch closer.

It's driving me mad because I only have 6 numbers to type with now, playing games is out of the question and even on YouTube I can't click on the comments or related videos. Theres basically a horizontal line in my phone that's dead pixels and random parts of my screen.

I tried this app that detects dead pixels and fixes it but that really didn't help. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Sounds like a digitizer screen issue, I would take it in to a Sprint repair shop, they might replace it.

A corporate store, with the part, will replace the entire display, digitizer, and front chassis for you for cheap. It is a single sealed assembly. It makes repairs much simpler for them, but wastes parts and they have become somewhat scarce. They replaced mine for the one time $35 fee months ago (read posts on page 1).

Ensure that they are a corporate repair center beforehand and make sure you get in touch with them at all costs and that they have the part (you'll have to find a way to get through to them).

I wouldn't want you to waste the 45 minute drive and the hour wait for them to swap the parts. You'll be lucky if they have the part.

agree could be a digitizer issue.

are you rooted?

have you installed or removed any programs that manipulate the screen?

do you have a screen protector and/or case on the phone?

does not sound like dead pixels because you would see pixels that are "stuck" or showing a color other that what should be there.

rooted yes, otterbox defender since day one, no screen protector, been acting up about a month and a half after buying it, wasn't rooted while it started.

Thanks for that I'll look into it. So going to a normal sprint store that does repairs wouldn't be the best route to go?

Yes it is your best bet, and you might get lucky and they might not charge you, like they did to my buddy, he was ready to pay $35 and they never charged him, ;) I think he griped to them and called account services while he was at the store, he figured he would give it a shot and it worked.

Been reading through this thread and it hit me that I too may be having this issue (soon after I installed ICS).

But not completely sure. So my phone works normally, there will be intermittent times where it just stops responding to my finger. I have to shut the screen off and unlock it to continue doing what I was doing. Could this be a digitizer issue too? I have a launch day phone. Not rooted.

When you installed ICS, did you Factory Reset ?? If not that is where I would start first and see

I wouldn't but that is just me, most of them really don't care, but this will be your call, my buddies phone was rooted and they never said a word, lol

Lol if it wasn't so far away I wouldn't even worry with it but it's fact I could get there and they would refuse to touch it

Well I bet if you are driving that far, there will be a few within range, so if one does not want to do anything, I am sure another will. They really are not all tech savy when it comes to root, they will only know it is rooted if they are looking for it, usually the Superuser app gives it away, lol. I see your point though, good luck and keep us posted.

That's why my current home replacement (go launcher) comes in handy to hide apps lol but I may want to flash stock as the boot ani would give it away too lol

My evo 3d's digitizer....
Sometimes some 1 cm portion in right side does not works.
Sometimes some areas are not responsive.
Sometimes automatic random clicks happen.

But all this happened just after HTC updated it's software to android 4.0

The reason may be that HTC might be using more than one type of digitizer hardware and driver for one of them is not fully compatible with 4.0.

All I know is that this has nothing to do with malicious software as the same softwares were installed when I had android 2.3.

Another problem may be of bezel. The aluminium cover of front bezel had got detached at some places. About half an hour ago, I peeled out all the aluminium present in it. Since then the phone is working fine.

Let me be the first to chime in, 99% sure it has nothing to do with the ics update. Myself along with many many others are having your problem, some before and some after official ics update. Digitizer for evo 3d just tend to go out easily.

So I've been having a problem with the screen where it will randomly click on stuff. So I was thinking it's a problem with the screen digitizer.

So I go to the Sprint store...

First question he asks if I'm on a custom ROM.
(I was thinking, well might as well tell him, if he says they wont fix it I'll just go home and relock the bootloader and unroot and bring it back) So I told him yeah..
He replied that it's probably because of a custom ROM.
I was like I don't think that's the problem (I've been rooted for 6 months, I've had this ROM for a month or so, but the problem just started last week)
He said that they don't care if it's rooted, just I'll have to hard reset it and bring it back tomorrow to show that it's not because of the custom ROM. He said it'd be $35 since I don't have insurance and they'd replace the screen.

Just thought I'd share because I bet others have or have had this problem..
