Root phone is rooted is there a way to get more memory

during the process of rooting my evo 4g and my wifes
i read some part some were there is a way to get more memory out of the sdcard and the phone is this ture if so please point the right direction
 
I'm no expert but there is a way. Hopefully one of the more experienced users will explain it better.

The basic is you will need to format your sd card and then setup a partition on it. You do this in recovery. Once you do that, you just need to flash a rom that has a2sd baked in. If everything goes well, a small part of your apps will be installed on the internal memory while the bulk of it will go into the sd-ext partition you setup.

It is nice to have. But your mileage may vary, as I seem to experience differences with the roms I've tried.

But wait for one of the more experienced people here to reply before you do anything :)
 
Yes, like stated using a rom that will play nice with an sd-ext partition.
First steps, back up your card to your PC as you will be deleting everything.
I assume in your rooting you installed a recovery. Partition your card to an sd-ext partition. I've seen reported issues stating more than 1024 partitions causes issues.
After this is completed, install rom of your choice. If a2sd is not included there are a few other options available in the market; link2sd, s2e, etc.
All of these will install your apps to the SD but watch for ones that use widgets. Sometimes apps will crash that are installed on a SD card. Lastly, when you do this you will not be able to use any apps if you remove your SD card.

the issue is that the evo has a small amount of ram on the phone. not sure what htc was thinking when designing the evo. but there is the apps2sd that can be sort of helpful. when you go to settings/applications/manage apps and then move the apps to the sd card, you are using apps2sd. it moves the apps to the sd card, but it only moves part of the app to the card. the other part is still left on the phone. that is why you can't use any widgets attached to the app when it is moved to the card.

so what is taking up all of the ram then? well your phone, as it is, has the dalvik cache which the phone uses to load any executable files that it needs. and then there is cache where your temp files are stored. of course there is your apps. and finally there is the stock rom with sense 1.0. so you can see how fast your ram will disappear.

the only way to get around this is to be rooted. the custom roms that are out now are much smaller and faster then the stock rom. plus you can partition your card and use a2sd which is different then apps2sd. a2sd moves the entire app to your card. the only thing left on your phone is a symbolic link that tells the phone where to find the app on your card. it saves a ton of ram by doing this. just to give you an idea i have 160 apps with still 250mb left!

there are two types of a2sd scripts. one is cm a2sd and the other is darktremor a2sd. usually if a rom has a2sd cooked in, it usually has cm a2sd. when you flash your rom your apps when restored with titanium backup will automatically be move to the sd card. with darktremor a2sd, you would first need a rom to have support for it, and then you need to flash darktremor into the rom. once flashed then you can manually push the apps to the card by using terminal emulator to enter the commands.

you will need a higher class card to do this, preferably a class 6 or higher. the higher class card is need especially if you use intensive apps like games and such. the reason is that since the apps are on the card the phone then needs to read and write on the card as the app runs. so if you have a slower card your apps will suffer.

now i do not think i have any of thows apps i have not seen them in the app list. and as you know my micro sdcard is a 1g with a circle around a 2 i am guessing the is the class so dose that help for me to do thei cuz the guide says 6 but i dont use the apps that requier a lot fo power like gameing aps and stuff

I'm too impatient, I buy what is available locally cheapest sometimes. Got a 8gb class 6 from Walmart yesterday for $9.
From working in the PC industry for many years, you have to be careful with drive space. People get complacent and content and forget to back up.
So...always remember, if its important always have it saved in more than one place just in case!!!
 
size is not the important thing. it is the class of the card. the class of the card will determine how fast the card's read and write speed will be. if you are going to partition the card you will want a fast card as the apps will be on the card entirely. so the slower the card(lower class cards), the more the apps performance will be affected. the highest class card they make is a class 10 card.
 
You can get a 16 GB class 10 card for $13-14 on amazon.

Well worth it.


And Ocn, I believe they actually have faster rated cards than class 10 now. That's why the price has dropped so much
