What did you vote for and what do you want to switch to?

(I can't actually change your vote, but I can change how many votes each option has).

The more I played with the "sample" forum that Phases posted, I stated liking the Prefixes more then I thought I would, so change my vote from number 1 (Leave things as is) to Number 2. (use prefixes)

Thanks much!

Done :)

I like the prefix idea, but would prefixes include any phone-specific information? I like that I can go to the G2 forum and know that everything is going to be relevant to my phone. At the same time, I can see how making a prefix (or sub-prefix below general?) for every single phone could get messy.

But I'm new... sooooooo

Everyone's opinion is valid here, noobs and vets:D
And the phone sections would still be intact, ie if you go into the G2 section everything should be specific to the G2

+1

As a matter of fact, sometimes the newer folks have a fresh perspective on these things.. definitely a way of looking at the place that staff needs to consider, being as how we want them to stay. ;)

Hey, been waiting for you to check in BigMerf. ;)

Great, thanks! Sorry, I understood that all the subforums --including phone-specific ones-- would go away. Good to hear otherwise.

Nope, not while Rob is suffering with (possible) strep throat, it can continue to wait.

I am very eager to get this settled though, believe you me.

How terrible would it be to simply remove tips and tricks, and accessories. Let that stuff be talked about in the main area, and simply have a support and troubleshooting subforum, an ATR subforum, and maybe a ROMs subforum.

I'm tired of this dragging on (thanks to me and rob), need to get something in place so we can standardize it across all forums.

The problem is all the broken incoming links that will take place by removing 2 subforums in however many forums, but that's a problem we were facing to begin with.

I vote for removing Accessories subs (edit: if you have to remove something). ;)

But the Tips areas are just now getting settled in to that notion of attracting good info. Yes, they do also attract a lot of queries looking for tips that are moved to Support and Troubleshooting, but the tide is turning in the forums I take care of, and I'll bet others that are being taken care of, too.

I think that is a terrific idea and probably the most efficient solution we can implement.

Edit: And yes, this has dragged on probably a bit too long. Something needs to be done!

Actually, the idea of removing Tips and Tricks is growing on me.. as I look at those device areas, the trend by members is to try to get something resolved or to discuss ins and outs of various issues with the device; those are the two most common types of posts in device specific forums.

I'm on the fence about it. I do like the idea of centralized tips areas for reference, but even if we had a list of tips for each phone, alphabetized and searchable, etc, categorized and so on, it'd still have to be locked and maintained with new info by staff to stop posts of queries for help. And we already have something a bit like that with a guide sticky in each forum.

I'm stick sticking with option # 2. Get rid of the other sub-sections except Root.
But make sure the other sub-section threads have the prefix before moving them into the general section.

But again I ask, how hard would it be to add those prefixes before the move? Is there a script that can do it all on one shot or would that have be done manually.

Either way, lets just get this done asap. Its been two months already.

TS out

I think I'm going to propose something to Rob. It may not be perfect, but I'm tired of not having something figured out, so we could/should go with SOMETHING for goodness sake and fix it later if we must. The ONLY negative to all this is the millions of 301 redirects I'll have to make but screw it.

Here's what I have in mind at the moment. Feel free to weigh in. Whatever I'm convinced is good at the time of him getting back online, I will go with.

Subforum Standard:

- Make "Support and Troubleshooting" and "All Things Root" the only subforums by standard.

- Create these subforums for all current devices and all future devices on forum creation. Phones and Tablets.

- Move threads in any exsisting accessories and tips and tricks subforums into the general forum, then delete the subforums.

- Possibly have a "tips and tricks" sticky in the main, and a "ROMs" sticky in the ATR, that can link to all the appropriate threads. Possibly not.

All Things Root quicklinks on the main page:

Either delete (people can drill into the phone forum and/or use the favorite forums feature) or.. see if I can get them to display in four rows rather than two when you click "show". I think I prefer delete.

Tablet Section:

- Follow same subforum standard as the phone forums.

- Add all tablets that are currently available, including the standard subforums.

- Add tablets as they become available or as hot tablets get announced. Or, if we must, add all tablets as they get announced period. Yes the home page will grow, but should stay contained, see Archived Section, below.

Archived Section:

As phones and tablets prove uninteresting or obsolete to the public and go, say 60 days with no activity in the forum if it was once popular - and maybe 30 or so days after an annoucement with zero posts, it gets moved into the archived section. We'll have to tweak the formula I'm sure but the point is to give everything a shot to have a spot on the home page, and if it's not an active forum it gets moved out of home page view, but still perfectly usable.

Ready, go.
