Help Phone Shutting off randomly?

I've had a few shutdowns, and each one has happened at the same time of the day. Funny that it started after the OTA update...

Anyway, before I head off to AT&T, is there an event log viewer somewhere that I can use to check application/system/etc logs to see if a shutdown command was sent by a specific process?

First, welcome!

Regarding the OTA update and your shutdowns, IMO it's strictly a coincidence.

I haven't read about any logs or debugging results that have identified the culprit, and I've read just about everything there is about this anomaly. Only one app has ever been solidly identified with shutdowns, and that's SetCPU. Not the app itself, but rather user settings that proved too aggressive.

Congratulations on your decision to exchange the phone. If you've made significant customizations to your current device make sure that you've backed up your phone using, for example, Titanium Backup. Your backup should be domiciled on an external SD card which would then be inserted into your new phone. This will assist with the backup's restoration. For additional information (in the event you haven't already considered this), refer to http://www.capfaq.com/w/Backup. If this is all "old hat" to you, no offense!

I appreciate the reply. I'm looking for an event log viewer so I can look at the logs myself. Do you know of one that I can either install on the phone or use with the sdk? If not, do you know where the logs are located so I can find them?

random shutdowns redux.

If you've confirmed that a random shutdown was, in fact, a random shutdown and that you didn't effect the turn-off yourself, you can do one of the following:

1. Repeat "why me?"
2. Beat your head against the wall.
3. Wait 'til your 30 day trial period is up so that you can then complain about getting a refurb.
4. Howl at the moon.
5. Try to blame it on a yet-to-be identified misbehaving app. (even more fun if your phone is stock.)
6. Try another battery.
7. Research the hundreds of postings here and on other forums that haven't yet determined a way to keep the phone and eliminate the shutdowns.
8. Listen to ave maria backwards, at which point you'll hear the soft, haunting words...

"exchange the phone, my child."

ladies and gentlemen. There is no other solution.

Don't argue with ave maria. It's a beautiful song - and now with even more meaning.

lmfao!! I love #7!

Go get the android development kit, get the DDMS.bat debugger to run and see why the phone powers off. I am positive if you have the debugger running and it powers off, the data logged would be very helpful.

Have fun. Now's your chance to be a hero. Or not.

So, I've started having the shut down issues with my phone. It probably started maybe a little over a week ago. I've had my captivate since around July I believe so I have a feeling I may have some difficulties due to the 30 day warranty being up.

Has anyone had any luck with swapping the phone for a new one after the 30 days?

Btw, Jack, I never fail to get a chuckle after reading your posts.

It'll be pot luck. You'll most likely be getting a refurb, but there's a school of thought that these are better than stock since they've been individually checked out. I don't subscribe to that school's curriculum, as I believe the device's examination simply consists of re-flashing the phone, cleaning it up, and re-boxing it (while the North Korea national anthem is surreptitiously piped through the PA system).

I had a feeling you'd say that. I'm not keen on the idea of a refurb, especially with how I have babied my phone thus far. Ah well, I think I'll try my luck this weekend at a brick and mortar store and see if I can perhaps con a sales person. Thanks for the quick reply.

Thanks for the reminder =) I had done the One Click Lag Fix then on a whim a month or so back I removed the Lag Fix as well as the Root, so there really isn't a need for me to back up.

Now I'm tempted to try a factory reset for funsies, I know it's probably an act in futility but I can't help but try to piss myself off by redoing my phone. lol

Thanks. There are two viewers that were recommended to me over at the xda forum: logcat and osmonitor, both available from the market.

Damn... this thread didn't turn out the way i hoped.

My phone is less than a week old though and i got it from wirefly, so hopefully i can get a brand new one via their return process.

Guess i'll backup my phone now :(

I'll keep that in mind after i get my new phone and if its still an issue. Wirefly so far has great service... told them the issue and they're sending me a brand new phone (not a refurb). No out of pocket costs except for a 100% refundable deposit when they get the old phone back.

I don't know if its related or not, but my phone doesn't connect to the ATT server for a software update. I tried multiple times in good coverage and keep getting an error. So regardless, i'd be returning the phone to fix that (my wifes phone updated on the first try)

Edit: is there any way to backup my downloaded apps to the external SD card? (im going to search because im sure there's a way, but if someone can save me some time that'd be great. Obviously, im not going to root the phone... im returning it)

I'm trying to decide if I am having the problem as per topic of this thread.

My recently new phone (after returning it for other reasons) has been in what I would describe as permanent sleep mode, or locked up while in sleep mode.

So what I mean is, that I cannot power it up without pulling the battery first. I have been experiencing some FCs, and particular problems with Launcher Pro lately being very laggy, and ultimately FCing. So I'm not sure if my problem is that, or the problem all have discussed here.

I have not seen comment about having to pull the battery in order to boot up. Is that the case for this problem?

I am still wondering if a symptom is that you have to pull the battery in order to boot for this problem. I'm not sure yet that I am having the problem as listed in this thread.

Does your phone shut off randomly? If so, it sounds like you're having a similar issue. There's not a lot to it. If either shuts off by itself or it doesn't.

I had to remove my battery once today if that makes you feel any better.

Well, thanks for trying to make me feel better. :)But I'm not interested in feeling better, I want to know if mine is having the shutoff problem.

When it requires a battery pull, I don't consider that 'shut off'. That is locked up in some way, and as such, quite different from 'shut off'. If it was just shut off, I could restart it with the button.

Very few have made that distinction, but it is two different things.

Ah...so it's not shutting off; sounds more like "freezing ".

I'd say that's a different issue since we're all talking about the phone shutting off, turning off, by itself. Then we turn it back on normally.

Maybe your issue has a better resolution than ours.:)

I am in agreement. That is why I posted to ask. I didn't see any posts about having to pull battery to get it going again.

So my path will be to see if I can identify the app that is causing it, as opposed to returning the phone.

Thanks for the replies.

Here it is October, and I'm having the same problem with my new captivate. I love the phone but it suddenly started turning itself off. Two mornings in a row, I have awakened to discover that my phone (and alarm) were shut down. The phone lost about 25% of its charge overnight sitting on the nightstand. Has anyone found an answer to this? I just got the phone less than a week ago.
