Help Phone Shutting off randomly?

Called up Samsung customer service and sent my phone to them for repairs. They replaced the battery it seems and it's been fine since (fingers crossed - 3 days and counting). Previously my phone used to shut off on its own 2-3 times a day.

Not to sound negative, but if the only thing they did was replace the battery, that hasn't helped anyone in the past. If they did other things under the covers that achieved the elusive goal known as "power stability," good for you. Keep in touch.

i got my captivate yesterday afternoon and since then its shut off almost 20 times. it mostly shuts off when its not in use for awhile. but hasn't shut off when its plugged in. i'll be calling at&t for a replacement tomorrow.

Mine was fine for about the first 20 days or so. It has done it twice now within the last hour. I will probably be returning mine and waiting for something else to come out. It is a shame because I really like the phone but if it isn't reliable then I do not want it. Hate to say it, but between these random shut offs and the spotty gps, I think I have had enough of the captivate:mad:. I have until decmber 9th for my 30 days so I still have a few days to decide what I want to do.

Mine has been doing both of these things. Powers down from sleep several times a day and also occasionally flashes the lock screen from sleep mode. I am not happy about this problem, nor am I looking forward to having to send my phone in to get a new one.

OK so based on a grand sample size of two (mine and a friend's captivate) I've developed a sneaking suspicion that the shutdowns are, at least in part, related to network connectivity.
On the two captivates that shutdown regularly, i've separately a) removed the sim card and b) put the phone into flight mode and the shutdowns ceased both times for lengthy periods.
I know its immensely inconvenient if this is your only phone, but can some of you try either of these things for a couple days and see if you still experience the shutdowns.
Perhaps we can try and debug a little further from that.

Like I stated a few posts up, my captivate powered off a few times yesterday. I think I possibly might have found the reason. Yesterday before the random power offs, I added the power control widget to one of my screens. The power offs happened shortly after. I told my friend about the power control widget, he added it to his home screen and his phone turned off pretty much instantly. I have since deleted the widget and have not had anymore problems. I know it is strange but I think that solved my problem. Like I said in my above post, I have had no problems for about 20 days but after adding the widget my phone starting shutting off. Just curious to see how many people that are using the power control widget are having random shut offs. Maybe this helps, maybe not lol

I don't have the widget installed and its shutting down on me. I thought I had figured out the issue by not having the power saving option on at night. I did that Tuesday night and woke up Wednesday with the phone still on. I tried that again last night and the phone was off when I woke up. I turned it on and went back to sleep for another hour and the phone was off again when I woke up. I am definitely getting a replacement this weekend.

Phone shut off again last night, the only thing in common with time before is that I was charging phone overnight. Wife woke me up because phone was making a noise for a while. The noise was the phone telling me the battery was fully charged and to unplug. Don't know how much time had passed since first notification, probably at least an hour or more. Unplugged phone and 2 hrs later woke up and discovered phone had turned it self off. Turned phone back on and less than an 2 hours later phone had turned itself off again. Turned phone on again and yet AGAIN 2hrs later discovered phone had turned itself off again. It has now been over 2hrs and battery indicator shows slightly less than full charge and phone has NOT shut itself off. So, the only common factor in my phone turning itself off in these two occurrences has been charging the phone overnight, because since last occurrence I have not tried charging phone overnight. I also, loaded no new apps since last occurrence. From now on I will charge phone while I'm awake, will not charge phone overnight in the future.

After having played around, I have found the problem to be 100% reproducable. My phone was shutting off several times a day after I got it on Nov. 21st. The one thing that seemed to be in common with the shut offs was that it happened right after I took it off the charger. Doing some searching I found someone who said that it was a problems power management software that when ever the battery was charged to 100% the phone would enter a sleep mode. So i played around and let it charge to 100% and took it off, and it did indeed go to sleep. So then I tried plugging in the phone at night and letting it charge, not taking it off the charger until I got up in the morning. Upon getting up I would turn on pandora radio and let it play until 1-2% of the battery discharged. Since doing this I have not had 1 reset. I have even charged the phone to around 98% before going to bed and taking the phone off the charger. When I got up in the morning the phone was still on. The lesson here is
a) leave the phone on the charger at night, or at least make sure it is < 100% if you do
b) If you do charge it over night, upon waking up use at least 1-2% of the battery immediately to prevent shut downs.
It has solved my issues thus far, hope it helps someone else.

Another solution-assuming overcharging to be the cause-is to get a spare battery and external charger, and just don't plug your phone into the charger..just swap batteries and see what happens

I too obtained my phone from Amazon. It was rebooting constantly. It could just be sitting by my side and as I looked down within a 30 minute TV show, it would be off. Reboot the phone and again within 30 minutes or less it was off again.

However, after I completed a factory reset of the system software and reinstalled my applications, I have never had a shut down since. This was the last week of September.

edit: Oh, and I also leave mine plugged in and over-charging all of the time.

I had this phone and I was experiencing the same issue as everyone else. I took mine back and I have been watching these threads waiting for this to get resolved before getting another one. I really liked the phone except for this issue.

I saw this thread and Duhockey s post of:

"after reading a 60 page thread about this over at XDA word is that the new batches of phones were fixed by Samsung, really interested to know what number is under the serial # located under the battery.

I have a 1009 and I heard that the newest batches with 1010 and up are good. can anyone verify this? especially interested in the batch # of all the people who have gotten new phones that didn't have any trouble"

I wonder if this is true. Can we get a roll call of batch numbers and see if anyone with a 1010 or above is experiencing this issue.

I have a 1010... Just checked after reading in this post. I have been having the same problems and I've had my phone for a week. I have installed a few apps like task killer, but i remember this happening the second day i had the phone before i installed apps. Its frustrating because i do use the phone for an alarm and only once has it not gone off in the middle of the night. This is a problem and Samsung needs to address it. I bought my captivate from best buy and i guess ill be seeing about swapping out. I love this phone... I was an iphone fanatic until i saw this phone. Was it a mistake?

Btw my gps works great so far, takes a min to find me but i get fantastic directions. Only issue is that gps has a problem finding me indoors. Have to be outside or near a window with a clear view of the sky.

I did a hard reset and formatted both the internal and external memory and reinstall only a few apps this time around. It has been over a week now and my phone hasn't power off. Plus the annoying search screen also gone.

open my big mouth too early lol. Happen again today :( ( 1010). Anyway I just got a new captivate delivered (1011) will see how this one work out.

new to all this android stuff too, mine seems fine except when I get off work it seems to always be shut down, I can't take it in with me as I work at a prison so it is left in my truck for 12 hrs and it's cold so I just figured thay was my problem, just being cold,or since it wasn't being used for a long period of time it shut down automatically to save battery.

I purchased my Captivate before Thanksgiving. It randomly shut off like everyone elses phone. I put Captivate Keep alive on my phone and it does keep it from randomly shutting off. But.......since installing CKA my battery does not make it through the day. I charge it every night and use it very little. I checked the # under the battery and it is a 1009. I purchased the phone from Costco where I can return it anytime in the next 90 days. I am going to return it tomorrow. Hopefully the next one wont shut off on its own.

I still love the phone!

I had fairly good luck in the first couple months of owning my phone, but within the last 20 hours, my phone has shut itself off 5 times. Unacceptable. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm way out of warranty, but this is unacceptable. I've stayed vanilla pretty much completely. TouchWiz, no rooting, no custom ROMs... nothing. I'm holding out hope that we get Froyo in a timely manner, and that it resolves this issue somehow, because this is terrible.

>>> I'm way out of warranty.

You're not out of warranty, just out of the 30-day trial period.

Good plan to await the forthcoming Froyo. If the updated OS doesn't resolve the issue, exchange it. If the new device exhibits the same symptoms, exchange it again. Don't settle.

this has been happening to me recently as well. read through the whole thread and so far the only thing that would apply to my phone as a trigger for this is battery over charge.

yesterday it shut off 3 times in the morning, but then not once again all day. this morning same thing with full battery. - numerous shut downs.

Im going to watch it for a while, take the battery charge down a bit, and see if it stops shutting itself down.

will DEF be waiting for the froyo - hopefully it solves the issue!

Thanks for clarifying that.

And, I'm just hoping I handle it until the update is issued. It's insanely frustrating to have to babysit my phone. I can't sacrifice the battery life needed to run CKA. My hope is just to see Froyo by the end of the month, and then I can make a decision.

I understand completely and you have my empathy. The following is offered on the off-chance you haven't already considered these "fixes" that have worked for some:

1. CKA - if your symptoms occur at higher charge levels, set it to perform its activities only above 80%.

2. Set your screen time-out to 30 minutes and always turn the phone on and off using a gentle touch of the power button. Never let it go into sleep mode by itself.

3. Turn off power saving mode.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think it happens EXCLUSIVELY at high charge levels, but it's happened a few times at 70-75%, which is a big chunk of battery to part with if using CKA. I've got power saving mode off, but just now changed the screen time-out to 30 minutes... we'll see how it goes. I'll report in about any issues to follow.
