Photon lcd screen.... Pentile or not?

Given that this device hasn't been released yet, you can't really make that assumption. Basically, few people know at this point. One specific reference to the Photon's screen can be found here: Hands-On: Motorola Photon 4G and Triumph (Phone Scoop) . The guy there claims it's the best-looking screen on any of Motorola's current Android phones. So maybe there is still hope ;)

So are you saying the Epics display is like a pentile or its not a pentile and it has the 6 or more sub pixels?

We put a bunch of phones next to each other here at work awhile ago (Hero, iPhone, Evo, Epic, Moment, BB) and I thought the Epic was by far the brightest, clearest screen out of the bunch. Blew the Evo away in my eyes.
 
Someone on another forum was saying that the Photon will have a pentile screen. If that is so will you keep the Evo 3D? Is a pentile screen a deal breaker?

Im sure anything is better then my current Hero screen though! :D

Is there any solid concrete proof it will have a pentile screen or is it all speculation at this point?

Why wouldn't it be pentile? There's no way this phone would be the sole outlier when the Droid 3 and the X2 are both pentile...
 
Quite honestly, I went into best buy to take a look at the atrix in comparison to my evo 4g screen and i couldn't really tell the difference. It was clear enough a display for my needs, but could someone explain why it's such a deal breaker for many people? In real world, layman terms, how would the entile screen be "bad" in comparison to other types of displays? TIA

To be honest, 95% of people out there wouldn't even notice any difference.
But the one's like us who post here at the forums would.

Okay. Thanks. I thought my eyes were going bad. I've looked at the videos and pictures showing the weird black pixelation, but seeing the atrix in person, it still looked like a darn good display to me. Nontheless, that's just one of the criticisms that I personally can cross off as a non-factor.

The only time I've seen anyone complain they were looking at close ups that would be like having your phone an inch from your eye aka stupid close.

Yeah, it just seemed to be a way to nitpick. The only screen that's ridiculously clear to me, and obviously, is super amoled or the plus version. But the clarity of that screen isn't enough to make me choose a phone just for the screen as many do. My eyes are good, so that's also a non-issue....lol

To each their own. No matter what everyone has their own quirks of what they do or don't like. I didn't like the 3d screen at all and it made me dizzy.
 
I read up on the pentile screens to get a better handle on it, and I was thinking all the pictures look super grainy of all the phones, sure the one with pentile was unreadable, compared to the others, but they all looked crappy, and then I realized how far zoomed in the picture was. It is not like you could read text that small anyways without getting a headache. So, forget the hype include the "qHD" hype, wait a couple weeks and go look at one, and see for yourself how good or bad the screen is. How often do you look at pages with green backgrounds and tiny blue text anyways????

That's the one thing I noticed in all of the reviews of the pentile displays...they zoom in so close, but in all my years owning a smartphone, I don't think I've ever put my face right up to my screen to look at something.

I just feel it's a way for people to pick apart all these great devices, just to say one is better than another. In reality, majority of the general consumer would only be able to notice the difference in vibrance between the pentile vs. samoled+. Again, I'm completely neutral when it comes to this because in my head, I always go back to the original smartphone/pda phone that I had (Samsung i500) and I'm just happy having a screen that I can read in the daylight, which I'm able to do with my EVO and I'd be surprised if I wasn't able to do it with the Photon.

And there are plenty to test out that would give people an idea: Motorola Atrix, Droid 3, Droid X2 all have pentile QHD.
 
"Aka stupid close" lol thanks for the laugh! So I been in jail for the last few days, what have I missed?
 
I took a look at a co-workers Droid X2 which I assume has a pentile display and didn't see what the problem was. I'm sure if I used the phone under a magnifying glass I'd see some pixelation compared to some other displays but the screen looked good for the brief second or two I looked it over. I'll be getting this phone Monday following it release if not the release day. Have the EVO now and these phone seems to be a great upgrade so far.

Yup. My cousin has an Atrix. I had convinced her to switch over to it from the iPhone and she loves it! The few times I've hung out with her, I liked how the screen looked and didn't really get fixated on any huge difference looking at it. Even watching videos on youtube, it was fine.
 
In short it is the way the number of sub pixels and how they are arranged. It has two sub pixels instead of three. Which gives you a little less sharpness, and the colors are not as great, but it gives better view-ability in daylight and it drains the battery a little slower. It was a purposeful trade off to offer a screen for the working class people who want something pretty, not necessarily the best and most beautiful, but very functional. If you want the best screen on the market you want the samsung super amoled plus (Galaxy S II). Which, Sprint does not have yet, or retina on an iPhone 4. Which, is also not an option with sprint. The nexus S probably has the best screen amoung the sprint phones, but by the time sprint got it, it was no longer the latest and greatest :(
