Play m4v files on the EVO + Handbrake

I'm no expert in video, but the EVO screen is higher res than the movies are, and the codec is h.264, and the EVO can play HD youtube clips. It must be the bitrate or something.

I'll just keep the videos on my ipad. Bigger screen and more storage anyway. Let's just say I was disappointed with my EVO regarding this issue, ESPECIALLY since it has HDMI out

Why wouldn't a movie over 2gb's play on the EVO if it was formatted correctly?
I have a bunch of files I encoded in handbrake from DVDs.
They do not play on the evo
I left all the settings at default, except for some filtering that I applied...
There's no way I am going to re-encode the 200 files I have. This sucks

Well what did you encode them as? If you ripped them for iTunes then of course they will play on the iPad. I have an iPad and an EVO and over 1000 movies on my PC. All my movies had originally been ripped in containers that neither device recognize (Divx) so I have to convert to mp4 via Handbrake that actually plays on both..... And with my EVO I output it via HDMI when on vacation
FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB.
For whatever reason, there seems to an arbitrary cap on file sizes at 2GB on a number of devices on the market - and the Evo seems to be one of them.
I'd suspect that, if true, this is maybe a holdover and is due to the original standard SD spec being limited to 2 GB.
As you probably know, computer systems like to deal in powers of 2. A 32-bit integer (another happy standard unit) expressed as an unsigned number can go from 0 to 4 GB - but signed, it goes +/- 2 GB.

Interesting. I knew the 4gb file size limit... I just have not had an occasion to put a file bigger than 2gb (All my movies are 700 mb to 1.3 gb depending on resolution).
Also interesting to watch how quickly people clamor for a boundary change the moment they get access to a larger screen, the expression 720p associated with the device and an HDMI port.
Fortunately, my digital copy of Star Trek that came with my Blu-ray just fits - except for that pesky DRM that is not the EVO's fault.

I too do not understand this. I bought this phone so I could watch movies and since I am not in the movie making business, all the movies I play will be digital copies I have purhased. You say I don't have the right to play them, but if that was the case, why do I have a serial/license number? The digital copies I have show two files one for ky computer and one for a portable device like my EVO. if the DRM is really the reason my movies are not playing then why would anyone buy them?
I have both a Star Trek movie and a Harry Potter movie. Both are digital copies. Am I just sol on my phone? Why have an hdmi port without the movie ability.

So I tried creating my first video for the EVO from a Leap Frog DVD rip (for my toddler so I always have a video to show her when I am in a jam).
I used all the settings you have above except I left the aspect ratio check on since the video was 720 x 480 (although it is actually 1.333). I encoded and created the m4v file easy enough. I can play the file on my computer without a problem in VLC Media Player. I transferred the file to my phone. If I try to play it in the default video player I can hear the audio fine but the picture never shows up (or if it does, it just freezes on a certain frame). If I open it in Rock Player it appears to play ok but the video is a little "jerky" and every now and then the audio cuts out. If I hit pause and play it will come right back.
I noticed on How to convert videos and transfer them to the HTC EVO 4G - Know Your Cell MEX that they actually suggest a setting of 1500 for average bitrate not 5500 as you have. Could that be it? If more information is needed I will be willing to give it.
For now, I am going to try re-encoding by halving the video size to 320 x 240 to see if that makes a difference.

I'm getting the same issue, all the videos I've converted will freeze on the first frame but the audio keeps going fine. I've tried all different handbrake settings and also used RipBot, but result in the same problem.
Anyone know why it's freezing?
