Hey all, looks like this section has TONS of things going on. That's great!
As you can see I currently have the Moto DX and I have an upgrade available since the 1st of April. I've been holding on to it until a phone comes away a clear cut winner in the catagories I really care about.
1. First is that it has to be supported by an active and supportive community like the DX has been (been in the DX forum since August, and those people over there are great!).
2. Second, I want a device that does not have a locked bootloader like my DX has. Like I said the DX community has been awesome in helping all of its members achieve as much as they can with their devices, limited though they may be. But I don't want to have to tip toe around the bootloader any longer, which means Motorola will not get my money next time I buy a phone.
3. I'd like decent battery life. Now this is a sore spot with HTC devices that I've noticed so far. Having owned a Motorola for the past 9 months I can say it's a really well made device, and the battery (I picked up the 1750 mAh battery since the stock battery didn't cut it for me) usage has been acceptable. But personally I've always held HTC up as the best designer of Android devices. I love the shapes and contours of their phones, I just wish that they would... A. use Gorilla Glass for their screens, B. use metal bodies, and C. use bigger stock batteries. Some good news in that department is that I hear the EVO 3D is shipping with a 1850 mAh battery.... that's AWESOME news!!!! (Ok I realise that doesn't do much for all of you with the Thunderbolt, but it is a good step for HTC as a whole. I'm glad they're finally starting to see the light that these things need more juice)
Ok so the rumor that I'm trying to get to the bottom of is, while over on the DX forum a lot of us are already starting to talk about which device we will move on to when the time comes. I've been saying I'd like to switch to HTC since I've sworn off Motorola and their locked bootloader, and HTC's have had a long history of being easy root, swap out ROMs, and customize to the users delight.
But when I bring that up here lately everyone wants to tell me that HTC has started locking their devices down the same way Moto has, starting with the EVO Shift, and the Thunderbolt. Then I heard a rumor that a few days after releasing both devices with locked bootloaders, HTC released the keys for those bootloaders so that devs could create different kernels for them.
So, I decided to come to the place that could best answer this question.... is your bootloader locked or not? I see in this section that there is already a beta Cyanogenmod 7 floating around. I took that to mean that it's unlocked. But then I saw a lot of people saying that right now it doesn't work and will break your phone. So that made me wonder if it truly was unlocked or what?
Thank you for your input in advance. And congrats on your new devices, I've played around with a friend of mines and I was very impressed with the speed of this device!
