Root Please clear up rumor for me...

Hey all, looks like this section has TONS of things going on. That's great!

As you can see I currently have the Moto DX and I have an upgrade available since the 1st of April. I've been holding on to it until a phone comes away a clear cut winner in the catagories I really care about.

1. First is that it has to be supported by an active and supportive community like the DX has been (been in the DX forum since August, and those people over there are great!).

2. Second, I want a device that does not have a locked bootloader like my DX has. Like I said the DX community has been awesome in helping all of its members achieve as much as they can with their devices, limited though they may be. But I don't want to have to tip toe around the bootloader any longer, which means Motorola will not get my money next time I buy a phone.

3. I'd like decent battery life. Now this is a sore spot with HTC devices that I've noticed so far. Having owned a Motorola for the past 9 months I can say it's a really well made device, and the battery (I picked up the 1750 mAh battery since the stock battery didn't cut it for me) usage has been acceptable. But personally I've always held HTC up as the best designer of Android devices. I love the shapes and contours of their phones, I just wish that they would... A. use Gorilla Glass for their screens, B. use metal bodies, and C. use bigger stock batteries. Some good news in that department is that I hear the EVO 3D is shipping with a 1850 mAh battery.... that's AWESOME news!!!! (Ok I realise that doesn't do much for all of you with the Thunderbolt, but it is a good step for HTC as a whole. I'm glad they're finally starting to see the light that these things need more juice)

Ok so the rumor that I'm trying to get to the bottom of is, while over on the DX forum a lot of us are already starting to talk about which device we will move on to when the time comes. I've been saying I'd like to switch to HTC since I've sworn off Motorola and their locked bootloader, and HTC's have had a long history of being easy root, swap out ROMs, and customize to the users delight.

But when I bring that up here lately everyone wants to tell me that HTC has started locking their devices down the same way Moto has, starting with the EVO Shift, and the Thunderbolt. Then I heard a rumor that a few days after releasing both devices with locked bootloaders, HTC released the keys for those bootloaders so that devs could create different kernels for them.

So, I decided to come to the place that could best answer this question.... is your bootloader locked or not? I see in this section that there is already a beta Cyanogenmod 7 floating around. I took that to mean that it's unlocked. But then I saw a lot of people saying that right now it doesn't work and will break your phone. So that made me wonder if it truly was unlocked or what?

Thank you for your input in advance. And congrats on your new devices, I've played around with a friend of mines and I was very impressed with the speed of this device!

:D

Yes, the bootloader was locked and this was the most locked down HTC device to date. The difference between HTC and Moto is the TB bootloader wasn't encrypted like the X and every other Moto device was. It was cracked open in 2 days, IIRC. HTC did release their source code for Kernels and that allows full customization unlike Moto.

As WormDoes said it was locked down but not encrypted like your X is and still hasnt bn cracked MOTO did that for a reason, so if your think your X is locked up wait for the bionic it may be even worse as far as locked up...and the reason CM isnt working or a couple of other favorites is due to an RIL issue, with it having the new LTE radio i believe the devs are having to rewrite it from bottom up or vice versa in order to get things goin...once this is accomplished there will plenty of different flavore throughout the community not that there isnt already but once the RIL is goin then asop will b available..

Like worm says, its locked just not encrypted. All bootloaders are "locked" technically. Pure dev devices just have easy ways to unlock them . To your points:
1. Maybe I'm just used to all you guys in the X forums, as I haven't found this place to be as "friendly" . But it is very much active with a lot of great stuff coming out. I'm sure I'll warm up to these guys eventually.
2. Battery is going to take some getting used to. It's nowhere near as good as the X , but there are already some really cheap replacement batteries from htcexpress that make having and charging a spare battery very easy.

Now both of those seem to be negatives, but believe me the positives of the phone MORE than compensate for them. If you haven't had a chance to taste 4G speeds your in for a treat. It's fiber optic fast. 20-25 mbps download speeds. Sense UI is such a welcome change from blur or third party launchers. The version on the thunderbolt allows you to download custom skins that theme the status bar, dock, and lock screen. With root you can even remap the buttons to customize further. There is not a single thing I miss about my X.

not much more to add... im pretty partial to HTC phones now. i had a droid, and i was always a little more nervous modding it. with the moto phones you have to use RSD light and .sbf files in order to correct really bad situations,or return to stock. HTC is alot simpler... you can install things in hboot, wich is alot easier. with a security-off bootloader you can flash anything from a recovery image,to a boot image(unrEVOked...set you phone free :D) to a "back to stock" RUU.

my poor eris and incredible have both been heavily modded, and my eris especially has been unrooted and re-rooted several times to satisfy curiousities. and theyre both still kickin :D

for tweekers and geeks like us that like to mod and tinker,i think the TB is gonna be one of,if not THE best option from verizon for this year.

give HTC a shot... you wont regret it. espeically when AOSP roms are available to you wont have to deal with sense  :D

hey outlaw, another from the DX group here lol. hopefully Ill be picking up a thunderbolt soon.
I dont have much to add since I dont have the device (I have played with the one my brother has a lot though) but I can tell you about the battery, my brother was getting pretty poor battery life at first, now that he is rooted and running a rom he said the battery life was "MUUUUUUUCH better"
hope that helps

since your talking about rooting the TB you shuld be fine... removing the garbage and installing a UV kernel is yielding me 8-12 hours to 50% battery depending on how I use my phone... the phone uses very minimal battery when its idle in your pocket after root... stock I as getting 6-8 hours to 15% mostly idle... so sad that htc doesn't hire some of these developers to build their stock kernels to make stock more useable

I can't compare Moto to HTC because this is my first Android phone, but I can tell you this board for the Bolt is great when needing help and info, plus XDA forums has a huge Bolt forum as well. So getting any answers and info is always available. Over on XDA, all the devs for the roms & kernels seem to answer all questions asked pretty quickly.

Ah great info, thanks to all.

Now then to clear up any misunderstandings on my part, I'm not actually looking to get the Thunderbolt, I'm just looking hard at HTC as an OEM. It's not that I wouldn't like the Thunderbolt, I've played around with a friend of mines for a while and I can assure you that I would definately enjoy this device.

The reason I'm not getting a Thunderbolt is because I'm planning on making a switch to T-Mobile... yes I do realize that AT&T is in the process of buying them out, but I'm in a very unique circumstance at the moment... let me explain.

I'm going to be heading to Canada in the next few months for good. Originally my plan was to keep my Verizon device (whether that was going to be my DX or another device I picked up before I left I wasn't all that sure about) and just go down to my local Verizon Wireless store, tell them I was going to Canada temporarily for work, and get on the international plan so I wouldn't get charged for roaming. I was going to let them make the move when ever it hit them that I wasn't coming back, terminate my contract, and then get on with a Canadian carrier. But that plan changed a few days ago when I went down to enquire about how much that would cost. They told me it would be another $10 bucks on top of my current minutes package, and I'd have to get international data which moves me up from $29.99 a month to $69.99. But I'm not on $29.99 a month, I'm on the $9.99 promotion... so all told this would cost me another $70 bucks to keep Verizon when I move to Canada. No thanks.

So I've decided to get a GSM device so that when I go up there I can switch over to a carrier up there (I've already checked this out and know I can do it). The advantage I have by doing this is that I can pick out a kick ass phone down here to take with me up there, because there isn't nearly as good a selection of Android devices up on Canadian carriers as there is down here and all over Europe. So I get to take a kick-ass device up with me, and then just switch over. So I had to chose from AT&T and T-Mobile. Device wise I was eyeballing the LG Thrill (3D device) going to AT&T. But I've been on AT&T before, and I'll never go back. So that pretty much left me with T-Mobile, which isn't a bad thing IMO at all. I just wouldn't be doing it because of the AT&T take-over if it weren't for my unique circumstances. But seeing as I won't be down here long enough to get caught up in AT&T's net, I am not afraid to head over to T-Mo now and enjoy their cheap services and open Android devices... DOUBLE WIN!!!

So the two devices catching my eye right now are the LG G2x and the HTC Pyramid. Like I said I've always been a fan of HTC, which makes the Pyramid look REALLY good to me. I only have one small 'what-if' running through my head right now... what I'm thinking is that while I'm completely hooked on the 4.3 inch screen I've been living with for the last 9 months with my DX, I'm sort of thinking a 4.0 inch screen might be the best of both worlds. I can't go back down to a 3.7 inch screen, I already know that forsure. I was just down at my local Verizon store playing with an iPhone and while that little screen sure was a stunner, it just felt sooooo small in my hands after living with the DX I just knew I could never do it again. So I'm thinking that the 4.0 screen might feel a little smaller, but I may be able to live with it. But then what dawned on me is that the bennefit of the slightly smaller screen would be that it wouldn't take as much juice to run it as my DX screen does. So perhaps it evens out?

I dunno, I haven't gotten my hands on a 4.0 inch screen to see if it feels ridiculously small in my hands or not? But if I try it out and I just don't see myself on anything smaller than what I have, then the Pyramid comes out in just a few more weeks by the rumor mills estimation, and I know I can move into it feeling comfortable. I just wanted to clear up those bootloader issues since I want no such chains binding me in my next device.

So thanks so much for your insight into HTC fellas. I appreciate it.

:D

wow,thats quite a story  :D

just keep in mind that the now named htc "sensation" is not the thunderbolt, and we have no idea what may be in store for developers there. i did some quick searching and have found no references to it being rooted just yet.

just because the TB had a couple of very determined and talented developers that were able to figure it out fairly quickly doesnt neccesarily mean that the same will happen. as was said, the TB has been HTCs most locked down device to date, and that trend may continue,it may even get worse. we all hope not, since in the past htc has been somewhat regarded as being fairly developer friendly.

the TB is an awsome device, the sensation looks to be an even more awsome device. from my experience with htc id say as long as developers get access to the bootloader fairly early theres no way you could go wrong using it for your adventure :)

The sensation looks so awesome I thought of getting the cheapest plan on TMO just to get it! LOL Dual core, Gingerbread, qhd display, sense 3.0 ! Everything that could get upgraded from the Thunderbolt, did. I'm really jealous of that phone.

i agree,lol... if i were in a position to switch carriers,id consider it. but 3 of my 4 lines have contracts now so a change is not in the cards. plus verizons service works better than anything in some of the more remote places we go 4 wheelin.

true, verizon has me by the balls with contracts and with coverage as well. I will definitely make my way into a TMO store and try one out though.
