Root Please help me root my HTC Desire 601 (Virgin Mobile)

Okay.. bump in the road guys. My wifi will not turn on. Wifi connection is a prerequisite for Firewater. I did some searching and it sounds like this Wifi thing is a common issue when you flash your ROM.

A guy in this thread says that WiFix Manager should resolve the issue:
WIFI won't turn on !! | HTC Desire | XDA Forum

I was going to load the .apk for WiFix onto my SDcard and install it, but the WiFix website says I need to be rooted first:
WiFi Fix for Android 4.x

Please advise :)
Hey Jon. I thought firewater said you just need a working data connection.

You should be good with 3g or 4g assuming you have a mobile data connection.

try this link:
https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B8-7I2_Vt73ldUNPd2c4X0xoQXc&export=download

im downloading that also.

that is a twrp backup from this post

do you have twrp 2.7.1.1 installed?

if so,make a backup so that twrp creates a folder on your sd card. then place your sd into your pc via a usb adapter. youll need to extract the .zip file, and move the folder inside that is named "zara_cl442" into the backup folder made by twrp.

now wipe data/factory reset and restore the backup.

download this insecure kk boot image:
https://ssl.gstatic.com/docs/doclist/images/icon_10_generic_xl128.png

copy it to your fastboot directory, and fastboot flash boot imagename.img

hopefully youll be up and running :)

holler if you have questions :)
i did everything with no luck. do i need to erase everything in the backup folder and replace it with the zara folder? or just place the zara folder in with all of the other backup contents?
Nevermind, i got it working but it goes to the htc screen that says android at the bottom but doesnt go past that? what is that about?

Yeah you are right about that.. but that would require that I swap the phone on my Virgin account back over to the Desire. I'm currently using a different phone while I work on this fix for the Desire.

I'd prefer not to switch it back over unless absolutely necessary. Just let me know.

It might be necessary.... It was a pain even getting your phone booted, remember? We finally got a rom that works (well backup of a rom anyway). If WiFi is broken it might be worth reactivating your desire so you can s-off. Once you get s-off we're golden anyway. As soon as you get s-off you are going to run the jb ruu which will return you to fully stock jellybean. From there we will add root or whatever you want to do!

Okay I'll do it. Umm do you have some time this weekend to do it with me? If you do then I'll go ahead and swap the phone over on my VM account shortly before we begin. I'd like to minimize the amount of time that I'm unreachable by phone if possible.

If you have some time I'll make sure that I'm available for it.

Yes. I followed the guide on the previous page and it worked but for some reason, there is still a missing element because it will reach the htc screen and it says "powered by android" at the bottom but then it gets stuck there. I already flashed everything that needed to be flashed.

BrianW97, if you'd like I can help you with this. Are you looking to flash your phone to a clean factory reset of KitKat?

BrianW97, do you have google chat or Skype? If you want to give me your google chat / Skype email address then I can help you fix this pretty quick :)

Please advise :)

-flash superuser in recovery
-sideload wifix
-run fire water
-collect underpants
-???
-profit!

my apologies for the underpants coment if youre not a southpark fan ;) :p

the important bit of info is that you dont need your wifi to work to be rooted,if that is all that .apk needs :)

are you on kitkat firmware? or still on jb firmware? that is an important factor

also, are you cdma or gsm? (sorry if this was mentioned allready)

hadnt seen brians reply when i was typing mine. this is also a solid bit of advice. once your s off,the jb ruu should fix any current issues.

Okay guys I'm ready for firewater!

I'm rooted and everything, I ended up swapping the phone to be active, so it not only has 3G connection but wifi as well. So I'm down to

PHP:
4. Push, Prepare, and Execute firewater:

adb reboot <

Okay, I tried running Firewater and ran into this error:

PHP:
    preparing, one moment

    The first bottle is open
    chugging..........
ERROR: kernel contains HTC anti-firewater patch!
****** Try again with a different kernel ******

Any idea what to do?

Were you able to successfully flash the insecure boot.img from before? I'm not sure but I'm assuming that's why it's needed. Perhaps the KitKat kernel patched firewater so the insecure kernel is needed?

If it comes to needing linux, you can always make a live Ubuntu disc to boot on your pc. Let's wait for scottys advice, because I'm just not completely sure.

How did you flash the boot.img earlier and were there any errors?

I successfully flashed the insecure boot.img that you/scotty told me to previously. On the chance that it was somehow overwritten or modified, can I just re-flash that insecure boot.img and then try firewater again?

awaiting on the answer to the above, the insecure kernel is very important.

flowing backwards from the point that you linked,i did find a link to another insecure kernel, not sure if its any different than the one weve downloaded allready or not. you can find it in this post

in this post,it says to try rumrunner if firewater fails.

for what its worth,i have more or less quit using windows for any sort of "delicate" phone operations. it relies on finicky drivers, and is extremely vulnerable to other programs hijacking the phone comunications. its also not capable of reacting nearly as fast to the phone as linux. i used a bootable cd for a long time, and have recently installed ubuntu 12.04 permantly on an old laptop.

if you dont have any luck with the second insecure kernel,or with rumrunner, dont get too discouraged until youve given linux a try :)

edit: just saw your ninja post :)

sure, thats worth a try. then try the stuff above :)

Oh I guess I could just use a Linux bootdisk if needed.

But first I would like to try Rumrunner. Sorry for all the hand-holding but I couldn't find a clear guide on what exactly I'm supposed to do. Is Rumrunner an app?

Thanks I know I'm a pain.. Really screwed my phone up. If I keep saying THANKS as much as I'm thinking it the word will lose it's meaning! :p

edit: totally forgot to mention I tried re-flashing the unsecure ROM and the same error persists.

sorry we were vauge on that, its pretty common knowledge to us :o

rumrunner is an s off tool, just like firewater, except its a little easier to run, since you do not need to enter adb commands, you just enter one command to run the tool and then sit back and watch :D

http://rumrunner.us/

no need to apologize, youre doing very well and learning lots of things. help is why we are here... if it bothered us we wouldnt be guides and mods!

holler if you have questions :)

I tried rumrunner and took a screenshot of the command line. It looks like it failed, and I rebooted into bootloader and confirmed it's still S-ON.

I suppose it's time to try Ubuntu?
