Root Please help me root my HTC Desire 601 (Virgin Mobile)

To make things worse... I'm noticing that after trying rumrunner, the phone will loads into the OS and after 1-2 mins it restarts. It seems to be doing this endlessly. :(
 
when rumrunner is successful it looks like this:

not sure what to think about your restart prollem. if youre still having issue,do a factory reset and try restoring the backup and installing the insucure boot image again.

once the phone is stable again,id say its time for linux.

The phone was on jb when i accidentally wiped the rom, but im trying to install this kitkat rom from this forum. And it is virgin mobile so cdma.

Okay I factory reset, restored my clean backup.. the phone is stable again. I flashed the unsecure boot.img.

So.. should I get to work on making a Linux or Ubuntu CD? and is one (Linux/Ubuntu) better than the other?

Yes do that now. I don't think it matters. Ubuntu is just more user friendly. Gives you a more familiar gui

Were you able to ota KitKat? Or are you just on the jellybean ruu? Just curious where you're at. :)
 
jdub,ubuntu is prolly one the most popular distros,and therefore very well supported. ive always used it,and would definately recomend it. you need at least version 12.04

brianw97,if you havent OTAed yet,id pretty strongly recomend to try and get s off first,if that plan is ever on your horizon. as jbub is finding out,getting it on kitkat is a bit more tricky ;)

not much more to add at this point :)
 
Thanks, I found a guide on how to install Ubuntu onto a USB drive. I should have no problem getting it installed. Once I'm there I'll let you know and you can advise on my next steps :)

And BrianW97, you do NOT wanna be in my position! Take these guys' advice and don't try ANYTHING until you have a good backup and get full access... it's such a pain... but on the bright side, thanks to the nice people here I'm learning a lot about how this all works :)
 
Okay guys, I installed Ubunto on an external hard drive last night so I should be ready to go forward. :thumb:

Please note that I've never used Ubunto before. I assume I will be using a command line similar to DOS?

Yes, very similar to that. We have a mini SDK here on the forums that u can use for adb and fastboot.

I'm at work, but I will try and watch if you have questions :)

Thanks Scotty. I just tried searching the forums for the SDK... not sure how to find it.

I'm at work too so I won't be able to try anything until about 9 hours from now. But if you could help me find this mini SDK that you speak of, then I'll be more prepared for later!
 
So when I get home later.. should I try running Firewater from Ubuntu?

And if that doesn't work, try Rumrunner?

And just for clarification: Do the same commands for Linux also work for Ubuntu? (referring to command line commands)

for the most part. while on ubuntu,you will need to put sudo /. in front of each command

for examble:
sudo /.adb reboot

sudo /.fastboot reboot

youll need to place firewater into the same directory as adb/fastboot just as you did with windows. when you open terminal,youll need to chage to that directory with cd ~/folder

for example:
cd ~/android-sdk-linux

an easy way to find the terminal app is to open the dash home and type "terminal" into the search bar

Thanks. So I've been wracking my brain on this for over an hour now... slow progress.

I'm currently having trouble getting fastboot to see the phone. ADB can see it (adb devices) but fastboot devices does not see it.

Also, I did some searching and it sounds like the phone has a different USB identifier when in fastboot compared to when the OS is running. I need to add it to be identified by Ubuntu when in Fastboot mode I think.

Been stuck on this for a while and I just don't know enough about Ubuntu to make this happen. Any thoughts?

well,the beautiful part of linux is that the phone does not need any drivers or other things installed. it should just work. when you are running the commands,just to make sure were on the same page,you are entering:

sudo /.fastboot devices

and have successfully changed to your mini sdk directory?

did you run the installer script to install the mini sdk?

When I try that, it fails and says command not found. I also did some googling and people were saying it needs to be run as sudo ./fastboot devices (reverse the / and .). Even so, I've not had any success.

However:
If I try running adb devices (and I'm in the OS) then the command will run and it recognizes the device.
If I try running fastboot devices (and I'm in fastboot mode) then the command will run, but it's not seeing the device. It just says waiting for device...

Mind you, the bold text is EXACTLY as I'm running it. Not using sudo.

I also found a guide and disabled my sudo password so it doesn't prompt me for my password every time I run a sudo command. But so far I've been unsuccessful at running anything using sudo.


I think I need to get Ubuntu to recognize the device while it's in fastboot mode. These guys are talking about how to do it:
14.04 - Ubuntu is not detecting my android device - Ask Ubuntu

I've been reading it (and other guides to do the same thing) and I'm still confused. Haha.. Ubuntu is very foreign to me still.
 
oops,yeah that was a typo on the /. vs ./ :o nothing to see here,move along :p

are you using 14.04? did you permantly install it?

if youre booting it from a disc or flash drive,may want to go back a few versions and just boot 12.04. it will work fine for s off purposes,and sounds like give you alot less issue.

my laptop is old,and i cant get it to boot anything newer than 12.04,so i dont have any experience to offer with anything newer than that :(

I did permanently install it to an external USB hard drive (not a USB stick, it's an actual hard drive).

Not sure what version now that you mention it. Probably the newer one. I'll double check after work and if it's not 12.04 then I will find 12.04 and use that.

I don't care to use Ubuntu for anything other than to get S-OFF. So I'll do whatever it takes and then I'll hopefully be done with it. I'll check and post again later today.
