Root Please help with root/rom, have s-off (was- Accidentally updated after root!?)

Thank you again for all the help so far!!
I'm having trouble...since I'm obviously still clueless:
I'm need to save the openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-jewel.img file to platfor-tools dir but I don't know where to file that folder. Also, how do I do this step:
Run the following command via the command line: fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img
My hboot says Fastboot USB currently
Can I try and just use the Play download method?

Ah - sorry for the confusion.

Just as you saved that RUU to your Dirty Racun folder so you could run -

fastboot flash zip RUU.zip

This is the same deal, because Dirty Racun gave you the fastboot tool already.

So, save the openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-jewel.img file to your Dirty Racun folder and say there -

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-jewel.img

I used to recommend the Goo Manager way for this, and still do for updates on TWRP, but it seems that over time, I've seen that work about half the time for new TWRP installs - so that's why I recommended the fastboot way.

Ok to try Goo Manager from the Play Store - worst thing that will happen is it won't work and you'll have to follow the instructions above.

For a permanent, convenient adb and fastboot, ok to use this zip, it's good for Mac and Windows -

our forums' mini-sdk

Unzip to c:\sdk-tools, or under an sdk-tools folder inside your Documents on Windows or Mac, and you'll always have it. Then when you're done with all this, blow away your Dirty Racun folder, you won't be needing it any more.

Makes sense? :)

Ummm I think I get it hahaha. I got TWRP to work...I think, I can't tell.
Sorry again, I'm not familiar with ROMs. I just want the simplest way to root the phone for right now. If I use the Zedomax Mac root when I get back home you think it will work this time? I can't get his Windows version to work right now.

Yeah maybe I'll try my Mac when I get home. Zedomax's Win7 32bit root isn't working. I get permission denied errors
I get "error retrieving unlock code" when attempting the Regaw method.
Also, my hboot looks to say s-on still....

Whoa whoa whoa -

You'd said that Dirty Racun worked and you're still s-on??

You need to contact them before proceeding and get their help -

Unlimited.IO

Also - please don't tinker and try things at this point - regaw's is the last thing you want to run once you've done Dirty Racun (in other words, don't run regaw's).

If you select Recovery from your bootloader, does it boot into Team Win Recovery? Big blue splash screen, you can't miss it.

Get all your info ready so it's handy when you talk to Team Unlimited.IO - let us know when done there.

It does go to Teem Win Recovery.
Now my hboot does say Tampered..
Yeah maybe it's time for me to give up. I guess this ain't my thing. I don't need this radio to work in my car all that bad. I'll just control it through the phone...
This is too much for me

I didn't mean to scare you off, I just wanted you safe, ok.

If you have TWRP installed you can still do most anything.

It's ok that your hboot says tampered. That's perfectly normal now.

if you have twrp and it says tampered.....does it say unlocked? if so then you are part way rooted. if you have the superuser app in your app drawer then you are fully rooted....just s-on and unlocked.

and if that is the case then congrats!!!!!!!!:D

I just flashed Mean Bean. Looks like I may be good! Rootchecker says I'm good. Now to ultimately see if I can control the phone through my car's radio which is why I needed this help in the first place! Even so, with the simple root I had earlier I bet that Mean Bean is worth the trouble. If I'm all good I'll try some different ROMs and get some practice in.

Okay here's the scoop, gentlemen: The phone works great and MeanMod is awesome! Can't wait to take full advantage of the power saver on long pub crawls in the city! But most importantly, my main objective is that my radio in my car now functions as an interactive shell which is so awesome! Thank you again guys! This is easily the nicest group of people on this forum! Way better than all the car forums I'm a member of! I wanna send you guys holiday cards next year haha!

Yeah, I'm still gonna try and s-off again. A little later this afternoon. I wanna figure out Nandroid now so this doesn't happen again haha

Nandroid backups are a must in my book. Just boot into recovery and click backup then start. That will take a snapshot of your phone (about 1.5gb in size) as it is and save everything except internal/external storage. Welcome to the wonderful world of root! And to the forums of course.

Thanks! I made the backup to internal storage but if I want to do a full wipe (factory?) to flash a new rom like Viper4g then will TWRP still be there with my backup?

Exactly. A nandroid backup made with TWRP is like a time machine - you restore that backup, your phone is exactly as it was when you made the backup - including the call log, texts, apps, setting - the whole bit.

BTW - this is unique (I think) to Viper4G - its installer includes its own wipe utility and you do want to use that.

Normally, yes, you wipe from TWRP. If you wipe from TWRP and then from within Viper4G, it will take forever and you'll think it's broken or hanging (when it's not).

So - for Viper4G, don't wipe from TWRP, wipe from inside its installer.

And for the best Viper4G experience, please do -

I figure you're doing ok or I'd have heard back. :)

I recommend flashing the following two things -

#Fapple - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947686 - be sure to grab the version for Viper

lagfix4 for #Fapple - will speed things up nicely :) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35084694&postcount=9071

Wipe cache and Dalvik after you've finished flashing.

Note - in TWRP, you can stack those up and flash in one session - be sure to do them in that order though. ;)

PS - also, not a bad idea to update PRL and Profile when done with all of that.

So, flash Viper4G, #Fapple, and lagfix4 all in the same TWRP session - don't reboot between flashes.

Other roms may have their own specific flashing requirements - if no one answers here, check in the various rom threads for those.
