POP3 Email Setup - Charter

My Microsoft Outlook settings are same as yours and not working. My boss got his Corporate Sync account to start working again after four failed attempts. Tried battery pulls and whatever. Finally started working after the fifth attempt...why??? Probably the same reason your Charter mail settings work for you but not for me, just luck... good and bad.

I did try SBFing back to 2.3.340 and what a mistake that was. Thought I owned a slim brick until I found the SBF of the current 4.5.596. Sure do miss my root...If there is a way to roll back the recent OTA, I would like to see it.

That's absolutely the most crazy thing. I thoughtin one if your earlier posts you had a mobile.charter.net setup? I was thinking that had something to do with it.

I will find you the OTA manual as I'm sure it has unlock be out there somewhere.

I did and both PC and Droid email worked like it should... sending and receiving from same account without one device blocking the other.

On another note... I see others have sbf'd back to Froyo and I'll be giving it another go this evening. Picked up a few pointers that should guarantee success this round.

Well...I'm back. SBF'd back to Froyo 2.3.340 and couldn't get Charter email to cooperate while the account is on the DX. Have moved on to rooted GB 4.5.596 and still no go with Charter mail while the account is on the DX. Maybe it never did work for me...my memory ain't what it used to be. It's just amazing to how it's working for some but not for others. I give up and will only include my Charter email account on the Droid when traveling away from home. Or have Charter email forwarded to Gmail as a second option.

I have been going almost a year with the frustration of not being able to send from my charter account on my Droid X. With the new Gingerbread update I thought I heard it'd work. No luck. Remmbered I belonged to androidforums and did a search. This is a GOD SENT.......Thank You times a million

You are so welcome! I wish I could figure out jdc's issue. I'm frustrated for you. I really need to find out why this thread wont email me on responses. Ugh.

Please let me know what you find out. Very curious and very hopeful it works for you!

Uninstalled Office 2007 mail on the desk PC and went back to Outlook Express 6. Get caught in a login loop with Express 6 as soon as I add the Charter account to the Droid X... Express works fine as quickly as I remove the Charter account from DX. Receiving the Charter mail forwarded through gmail seems to be working although maybe with some delay. Am setup to send email using Charter through gmail but haven't tried that yet.
One poster says to setup Charter account as IMAP because POP3 does only allow one access point by default... just the nature of the beast. Will give the IMAP remedy a try some time.

I'm wondering if your problem isn't in your Gmail settings? I can send you my Gmail settings if you want. I use Outlook 2007 and used Outlook 2003 and both settings worked fine for me, but as I'm finding, we are all different. :)

It would be most helpful and appreciated to view your gmail settings. Messed around with it a little last evening and it looks as if gmail setup as IMAP may be the answer. Guess I'm not ready to give up yet...

Attaching my setup for Gmail. The blacked out segments are just my user name at my provider dot com/net. I am only including the relevant portion of my settings and hopefully this will help you in your endeavor.

Best wishes and let me know!

What seems to be working for me at the moment is "Coastal_Carolina's" method. Create username@charter.net account in IMAP and then delete the POP account. I'm using 'Outlook Express' on desktop, 'Windows Live' on laptop, with Droid using Charter mobile IMAP settings via email account auto setup (mobile.charter.net -in port: 993, out port: 587)

Need to get more familiar with folder options to streamline the view but that's for later.

I'm just glad something is working for ya. Also happy that there are other solutions in this thread that will help while another might not. Best wishes!

Hey all, haven't hit up the forums in a while and noticed that there was some new activity on this thread for my subscriptions.

I too was getting the "account in use or locked by another process" messages in Windows Live Mail and worked with Charter some to try to remedy this. I essentially got nowhere with them, even after offering my help since I work in Enteprise I.T.

You want to make sure that whatever device you check your email at the least is not set to check for new messages/email very often. I noticed that my phone and Windows Live Mail were competing against each other and causing Charter's incredibly awesome IMAP support/server to lock out.

In the end what I ended up doing is logging into my GMAIL and set my gmail account to check my Charter's email using POP3. This is under your Gmail settings on the "Account and Import" tab. This will pull your charter email off of their server and onto your gmail server/account automatically.

Again remember that IMAP leaves email on the server - i.e. cloud email/Gmail, and POP3 pulls the email off of the server onto the device you are checking it with, so it would reside locally on whatever storage you were using - not in the cloud anymore.

Gmail only polls your account every 15 to 30 minutes so its not perfect, but I gave up on using Charter's email as completely cloud based. Obviously more and more people are checking email from phones, smartphones, PCs, tablets, etc - so Charter needs to get with the program and fix their email server gripes.

I think when they originally setup their email servers and whatever protocols and security methods they are using, they did not anticipate multiple devices polling the same email account at/or near the same time.

Awesome information, this worked for my LG Optimus V with Virgin Mobile as the provider. Thank you for posting! I had followed the instructions from Charter and it just kept giving me the "can not connect to the server" message.

I'm having more problems with Charter email today. Seems like it happens to a lot of people.

Same here. I used the info in post #1 several months ago to set up my Merge and it has worked fine until yesterday. Not sure what's up with Charter. Right now I get SOME emails but cannot send any at all from my phone.

I know this is going to sound massively obvious, but 2 things:

1. Go in to settings - manage applications - gmail - clear data
2. Do a battery pull. Not just a restart, but physically removing and reinserting the battery.

My girlfriend had the same problems with her mail (and going one further, wasn't getting mail at all). This process solved the issue immediately. Maybe this is the solution for you, maybe not, but I do recommend you trying it.

Same for me. Charter worked fine until this weekend and stopped connecting with Droid X2. The settings for ERIS users posted earlier in this thread worked perfectly.

I too followed post #1 to set my phone up originally. I stopped both receiving and sending emails over the weekend. I tried a variety of things. I ended up deleting my account and resetting it up. Incoming worked fine. I had to change the outgoing setting to smtp.charterinternet.net to make those work. Working fine now though.

Hope it helps someone.

SWEET! Thanks for the heads up!

Hello. Do you know if your original post is still the settings to use for Charter? I ask because I had issues last week and Charter gave me:
Incoming:
Protocol: IMAP
IMAP Server: mobile.charter.net
Security: SSL
Server port: 993

Outgoing:
SMTP Server: mobile.charter.net
Security: SSL
Server port: 587

It seems to work OK but in the past I've had to have Best Buy set it up as Charter has given me incorrect info, but now when I delete messages on the phone (Evo Shift) they delete from my computer (Outlook 2007) and I don't want them to. It just started doing this last week. But also, it is taking literally hours for messages to show up in Outlook. I have checked the box in Outlook to leave a copy on the server?? Any suggestions?
Thanx.

Leslie

Followed Kramerica's instructions and have been using Charter e-mail on DroidX. Stopped working a few days ago. Anyone know what changed?!?
