Possible to get droid-x from CL/ebay to use as "itouch"?

hey guys,
is it possible to pick up a droid-x off of CL or ebay and use as a "ipod touch". meaning can I use a droid-x to access the marketplace through the wifi and install games and apps to play?

I beleive you can access the market. But, the wifi will connect to the internet. You can download games from there no problem. But i do think you can still access the market. I mean, if a rooted nook color can, why not right?

Thanks for the reply That's what I was thinking, I actually have the rooted nook color and I have access to the market via wifi, it's connected through your google acct. and I wanted to see if it was the same w/ the droid x.

Can other folks confirm?
 
i can confirm.
i have reset my phone so many times and afterwards i have to "activate" my phone. i usually skip this and go straight to my wifi to redownload all my apps from the market and then activate.
 
Unless you want to pay list price at a corporate VZW store.

I think the DX is available through VZW's certified pre-owned program. The CPO program allows VZW customers to purchase pre-owned phones any time they want to, without re-upping or extending their current contracts.

I don't trust 99% of the phone sellers on ebay anyways, and I have never been burnt by going with VZW's CPO program phones. Their phones also come with all the usual goodies like expansion cards, wall chargers that work without frying your new purchase, and full warranties, so if it is DOA or acts screwy, VZW will replace it at no charge. Also no shipping charges. Try doing that with ebay sellers with less than 200 sells.

No, I do not work for VZW. Just a satisfied customer. Call customer service and ask about the certified pre-owned program.

Simply pointing out another venue for the OP (and anyone else for that matter) that is a whole lot less riskier than Craigslist or eBay.
 
yeah it will work no problem. used my X for a couple days this way when i first got it....got it off CL by the way. i wouldn't use ebay just because who knows if it even works. CL you can at least see if it turns on.
 
There is a classified section here you could keep an eye on. Also,
if you dont plan on activating it, look for one with a bad "esn". It will ne much cheaper, but you can never activate it with vzw.
 
Considering the battery life on the X I personally wouldn't think it would function very well as such a device...I would think an actual iPod Touch would be a better route...

i would say an unactivated DX would be right on par with a touch.
i used my DX in airplane mode and watched a full length movie and it went from 80% battery to 70% battery. it was a 2 hour movie. i would say that is pretty good. by the time i landed i was at 60% but after the movie i did some reading and some game playing. not bad at all IMO as a media player
 
I'd bet that an X has even better battery life than the itouch, considering I own both and consistently killed the touch quicker
 
If I wanted to find a DX for use as a glorified MP3 player I think I'd look for one on CL/FleaBay with a bad ESN. The price should be somewhat cheaper since it can't be used as a phone...
 
I would honestly either go the cheaper route with something like an iPod touch as stated above, or something like an Archos 43 "tablet" PMP which you can score new for around $230. Market can be hacked on there easily enough. I find the point of having a phone that's not a phone (and paying for it accordingly) kinda pointless. Another option would be to get a Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept and use it without service or turn on the unlimited data service if/when you need it at $25/month.

Now, if you can get a Droid X with a bad ESN for a good price then by all means go for it. Also, I find that my DX with the official Moto extended battery does VERY well on battery life with 3G turned off and only using wi-fi. In fact, that's how I am planning on using if it if/when I go to Europe later this year.
 
I'd factor this into your decision: buying a cell phone with a locked ESN on craigslist is usually a stolen phone. Ebay is a likely chance, but almost a guarantee on craigslist.
