want some advice. im getting a new car early next year.

debating if i should get a brand new audi a5 in black

audi_a5_black_news_image.jpg

or a used 2008 bmw 335i convertable in black

what you guys think? they are both priced similar.

Do you want a convertible or is that particular 335i within your budget-range? The convertible is, I believe, around 400 lbs. more than the coupe. Performance may not be as big of an issue to you, because the convertible will still do 0-60 in less than 5.6 sec., but if you're expecting similar numbers as the coupe, well, it'll be about half a second slower. I'm sure you know, with cars, that's a good bit.

All Audis look the same to me, but in this case, the A5 is the way to go. I just don't like very many convertibles, either. An M6 or an exotic supercar would be the only ways to get me in one.

In the similar price range, a new 370Z may not be a bad choice either. You can get a roadster in that too.

I'd also throw in the Z4 35i as well, just because I'm a Bimmer fan.

a brand new 335xi ( non convertable) runs for about 55k. a brand new a5 with the packages i like rungs for around 44k. comparing those 2, i rather get an a5.

however, that particular 335i convertable is a 2009 with 17k miles and has a price tag of 45k ( new msrp for it was 61k) so i thought it could be a good candidate too.

370z is an awesom car, but im currently driving a g35, so i dont really want a nissan/infiniti again. i want something different, so im going german.

z4 is nice. but i need at least 4 seats, roadsters wont cut it :(

And the 335 is CPO, right?

Convertibles are a bit girly for me, but you're the one with the cash for the car so that's up to you to decide. Performance-wise, the Bimmer has it beat. Is the A5 gonna be wrong-wheel-drive? I think it comes as Quattro too, but that will be extra.

I don't like hatches and know little about them, but are those in the mix too?

yea the bmw is cpo. all a5's are all wheel drive, except for the a5 convertable, which has front wheel drive.

no hatches for me!

i actually decided. im gettign the 2011 a5 on black/black. theres 1 last 1 in a dealership and they are holding it for me. gonna call up the financial services and see what kind of rate they can give me :)

In this case, I guess I could second your decision. No matter how nice the convertible, unless it's an exotic, I can't justify it. The A5 is very nice anyway.

Audi just needs to make a killer engine. Outside of the RS6 (which isn't even in the States), there really isn't much in the way of a well-engineered engine. Eh, the R8 uses Lambo engines, right?

Audis are gorgeous and have quality interiors, build, and sound dampening. They are a good performance car. Two things I don't like from my experience in driving them.

a) horrible handling
b) lagged acceleration on turbo models

BMWs aren't as good looking and the new models almost look cheaply made from the outside BUT

a) awesome handling
b) instant acceleration.

audi may have fixed this though as the model I'm comparing to is an 2005 Audi A4 2.0 turbo to a BMW 325i. I haven't driven recent Audis.

I'm not car guru or stating fact - just my experience/opinion. I also like the old school BMW style better except for the new 1 series and 7 series models which look really badass. It's the new 3 series and 5 series that I don't like.

Sorry but a corvette Grand Sport, Z06, or a ZR1 will eat that snake and come back for seconds.

I don't think so. What is your metric for performance? Are we talking the ring, quarter mile, standing mile, etc?

I'm not talking with terrible GM-centric Motor Trend drivers either.

audi's aim is not to be fast, but to have a balance. beign inside a audi is very comfortable and relaxing, and feels extremely luxurious. performance is not their top priority.

as i stated above, audi is slow compared to other cars out there, but makes up for it in the interior and design. the looks is a killer, and the interior is just stunning. bmw's performance and handling is unmatched with other cars in a similar price range. however, the interior is extremely bland and cheap looking.

i chose the audi not for speed, but for the looks and the interior.

Well I'm glad we agree :)

The Audi will be a great pick since you are going for luxury. Truly a beautiful car.

This is an '03 540i/6 with the Brembo big brake kit (installed after these were taken) and a 125 HP shot of nitrous (actually adds 140 Lb-Ft!). I make base C6, E90 M3, and STi/Evo owners cry, especially on racetracks. I'm into the car for less than 30k, BTW.

This will soon be traded in for the CTS-V. They let me beat one up at California Speedway a month ago, and I was hooked. Yes, I will spray the car. I spray everything.

The Toys:

1969 Camaro - sorry, no pics handy at work, this was a base V8 until my dad and I got to it. My special 414 SBC, LM8 Corvette brakes all the way around, Hotchkiss, Currie, and a fiberglass full front clip with lift-off hood.

2885 lbs, 52/48 f/r weight distribution, 520HP 560 Lb-Ft, then the progressive 150 shot of Nitrous kicks in.

(example, but my body is in the same gelcoat color)

And to end all arguments about whose car might be faster than mine, I'm two months into building an Ultima GTR, again featuring my 414 SBC, this one with around 775 HP motor, with a 250 HP multi-stage nitrous kit. Yes, it will be just over 2000 lbs, just over 1000 HP. Hopefully, we'll be done in time to 'parade lap' it at Laguna Seca this summer before the ALMS race.
