Post ways to get awesome battery life.

Is everyone smoking the herb in this thread? An app WILL NOT SAVE your battery power. Your battery power primarily falls upon the user. An app will not solve anyone battery problems.
 
Constant radio toggling is an absolute KILLA for battery life.

Toggling the "radios" will not decrease battery life in any shape, way, or form. CDMA networks require more battery power because the phone constantly looks for the best tower signal. Hence a CDMA phone has superior call quality compared to a phone on a GSM network. That's the difference.

Not correct :) 3G & 4G radio power draw needs are different, so similar step change problems like 2G to 3G. The high speed data needs the extra powwa! :eek: :)

Why don't you correct yourself. If you take the phone into a subway to where the signal is blocked you will see a draw on the battery. If I "toggle" the switch on my EVO a zillion freaking times, I will not see a decrease in my battery percentage. That's like cutting the headlights on/off in my car and saying its going to be a major draw on a 24 volt batter. No its not.

I have had my EVO for almost a year and I know what I'm talking about. Verizon customers just got 4G and don't know what you are talking about.

Since when does a cell phone needs to normalize a signal? A CDMA network constantly searches for the best signal. Its not normalizing anything, its getting the best signal for you.

Signal is not a binary process (in this case), but the discussion has probably wore out its thread life :)

You do make a lot more sense than folks that believe in miracle bump charges adding hours to battery life :)
 
Has Anyone purchased the extended battery 2750 ? I received mine two days ago and charged it up and I have been having incredible battery life. YES it is a bit bulky but didn't take long to get used to. I slide it in and out of my pocket without problems and with the help of a sharp knife and needle nose pliers I actually modified my carrying case to work with the device when I want to put it on my belt. The stock battery was giving me about 8 hrs and I consider myself to be a power user with over 300 emails a day, lots of texts and of course some social networking browsing. With the same settings I have been using my extended battery now for 2 days without a charge and it is the first time ever that I have been able to do this with any phone I have owned either the droidX, Blackberry Storm, Storm 2 etc...

I am actually very happy with the extended battery and for the $50 I paid for it on ebay I would suggest it to anyone that asks. Im sure it is just personal preference.
Too bad HTC had their head up there ass and didnt talk to the people at HTC who designed the car dock.

Ok, this is a very old thread, and unfortunately, not one that ever got updated to the right info.

Here's the square deal - once the phone is at 100% charge, it runs off of the battery until it gets down to about 92 or 93% then starts charging again. While that's going on, the light is green, as if fully charged, and when you take it off the charger, it says 100% - but it's not.

By the time it updates the status, you've used it enough to wake up all of the services and use an app or something, so it appears to drop quickly to 90 to 92% right away.

That's luck of the draw for when you take it off the charger - if you take it off the instant it hits 100%, you won't notice that drop.

There's no such thing as trickle-charging here - none whatsoever. Trickle-charging this type of battery would cause it to catch fire. The charging circuit does not take it to 100% and trickle charge to maintain parity (aka equilibrium) - it shuts off and on and off and on while the battery goes 100% ->92% -> 100% -> 92%...

Neither is the apparent longer life due to the lower-power charging.

It's due to the fact that the phone eventually figures out it's not doing much overnight, putting processes to sleep and slowing that power dissipation to about 92%.

And what you're seeing is luck of the draw because some morning, you're going to wake up and it's going to seem to be at 90% and if you didn't read this, you'd be confused again.

So - that just means that for thing to work top-notch, you want that charging circuit to be calibrated with the battery (people try to condition batteries but that's not it - this is) - here's how:

with your phone on, charge while observing.
when it hits green, immediately remove from charger and power off.
plug back into charger. if not immediately green - your charging circuit is not calibrated. in such a case, charge until green, immediately remove from charger when green and power on.
plug back into charger. if not immediately green - repeat this process until regardless if off or on, if indicating full charge in one state, it immediately registers full charge in the other state.

Now - you want good advice on good battery practices, and I recommend this - Battery Tweaks For HTC EVO 4G

USB puts out 5V, the wall charger is no different. It puts out 1 A (1000 mA). USB ports put out 500 mA (std) or less - keyboard and front-USB ports on many PCs put out less - that's all ok, but the lower, the longer to charge. I use a 500 mA USB PC port all the time - only because it's convenient to my lifestyle. I use the wall charger when I can.

I wrote the battery tweaks thread that Tryn2getaclu provided in the link. That stuff was written before we received Froyo on the HTC EVO 4G. Some of the directions to get to certain settings may have changed due to the Froyo update.
 
Also, when you download apps in the market, you will be given the option to allow your apps to send/receive data on their own, otherwise automatically update. I suggest performing manual updates if you are concerned about losing battery power for no reason. And if you have 5 apps that have updates posted in the market, then those 5 apps will update all at the same time. If you are downloading the updates, then you are going to use up battery power.

The fix was a Download of green power and setting it to only check for a signal once an hour. I also manually managed whether it was searching for a wifi or mobile network signal through settings. This gave me 70% battery after 10 hours with about an hour of actual use when things were not on stand by. With 4g, a data sync after just turning on the phone takes seconds. So i'm not worried that the network is off with the phone in my pocket.

Why don't you just turn off your radios when you are at work. My building at work is like that and I just keep my radios to off. When I'm near an area so I can get a 3G signal I will turn on my 3G radio. CDMA phones burn more battery power searching for the best signal. Minimize that by turning off 3G if you are not using.

You can leave GPS and Wifi on all day long if you want. GPS will only use up battery power if you are using an app that needs to locate you. If you are just walking around and you do not have the network notification box checked. The phone won't constantly search for new sources of wifi. Newbs
 
Is there some reason, eg., decreased battery life, that those with access to a charger do not use one? It seems lots of people are inside or in their vehicle where the phone can either stay on the charger and/or be charged randomly throughout the day. Its almost like a "test" to see how long one can run between charges. Not a slight to anyone, just curious.

lol, great point. When I get home from work and jump on the net I just plug my evo into the wall like I'm on my laptop in order to surf. If people are going to work and running out of battery juice, how much work are you actually doing? If I could get my hands on a Thunderbolt I'm pretty sure I could get the phone to drain in idle at 1% an hour without rooting the phone.
 
Nope just dont feel like thinking about should I need my charge today? Before I leave the house its just annoying small yes but why not last the whole day and I would be a little more stress free'
 
This is an original Evo trick - I have zero clue if it applies to the Thunderbolt.

If anything in these instructions don't map 100%, stop, don't proceed:

Download the free Network app from the Market. (Network by Philipp Mangelow)

Start it, and scroll down until you see "CDMA auto (PRL)" - change it to "GSM auto (PRL)" - exit Network;

re-start Network then change back to "CDMA auto (PRL)"

and finally, go to Menu-> Settings-> System updates-> Update PRL and then Update Profile

The deal with the original Snapdragon was it could control either radio type. The Network setting would show that it was already set to CDMA, but that wasn't really true - it was defaulting to that because that register was sorta in an undefined state.

This was keeping a lot of our phones from going into standby properly and so forth, and was quite the battery saver for many.

I repeat - without x-ray vision or a Bolt - neither of which I have - I've no idea if this will work for you.

If not, let me know, I'll remove this post.

The Network app isn't brain-dead - it only shows options that apply to a given phone model, so if you don't see options for CDMA and GSM as described, exit out and report back that this is all invalid.
 
Battery life really overshadows this great device. Here is what i do and suggest it be tried. First I believe data is the key and the culprit to battery drainage. I install the mobile widget and turn it on and off when needed and I easily get over 10-12hrs more so than that as well after work around 9 or 10pm I put the device in airplane mode to maintain the same percentage I ended with. Which results with the battery lasting over 24hrs. I browse the web, check, read, and respond to emails and texts, listen to music using the poweramp app, although I've noticed the stock music app works very well with my beats by dre pros, I also play the addictive angry birds. My figuring is that as long as I am not using data I shut off the data with the mobile widget by htc, which would stop any background processes from doing anything until I enable the mobile widget again. From there the weather, emails, and whatever else uses and or runs in the background using data will update itself until I disable the mobile widget. I also use wifi at home even though I do receive 4g in my area. I also keep the screen brightness to auto and display for 1min. It works for me and hopefully htc and or verizon will soon send some updates to this device. We all know this device was released too soon and yet too late to be fully optimal to perform as advertised. Really why should after shelling out 2- $250, we have to buy expensive extended batteries and charging docks. Just send the update to fix the issues already. Right Thunderbolt fam?

Well said! You have mastered the battery equation. I wish more people viewed things like you. Especially since most of the apps that send/receive data in the background people do not even utilize.
 
Alright, I was having the MOST annoying problems with battery in the past week. I FINALLY fixed it after testing again today. No matter what I did I was getting 5-6 hours with little to no use. It was really starting to annoy me. I tried updating blockbuster and disabling the movie auto update crap and while getting better battery length, it still was about HALF of what I got with my incredible. I got so fed up with it that I rooted my phone for the sole purpose of deleting the Blockbuster app along with a good 80% of the verizon bloatware and the "apps" that do nothing besides show a video on how to download a free trial (e.g. rockband).

I kid you not. I went from 5-6 hours max to 14 hours and still having 36% life at the end of the day. This also included me playing angry birds for ~ an hour and texting/web throughout the day.

Just like everyone else though, this isn't a guarunteed solution to everyone, just thought I would share how crappy that stupid blockbuster app is. It kind of annoys me that verizon spent so many delays on this phone for battery life, however they left a huge culprit on the phone and didn't allow for a way to uninstall without root.
