Actually, I do carve pits, just not the Chinese olive pits. I carve monkeys from peach pits.View attachment 106187
That's gotta be the coolest thing I've seen in quite some time,& this is coming from someone who watches more than their fair share of You-Tube cat videos........................ :D
Any chance you sell these?

It can be quite time consuming to write hanzi (Chinese characters) well. I'm terrible at it myself. The students in school spend a hell of a lot of time writing it.

It's probably the only thing holding the Chinese back from taking over the planet.

Is it true in the UK schools, they don't even teach cursive writing these days?

No, it's back in fashion. As is grammar - do you know what a 'split digraph' is? 5 year olds need to know, apparently

I'm 73 and from the scribbling I see in recent decades, I have to say that cursive writing being taught in the USA schools is an art that was lost 40 to 50 years ago.

I write cursive, always have and take a lot of pride in being able to write so that anyone can read my writing. My signature is usually an inch high, I don't give a damn about the tiny spaces they leave on medical forms or other slips of paper: "it says sign your signature here", and I damn well write my signature here full size, piss on their little 8 point pidgeon spacing.

I would put it up here, but then anyone could sign my checks :(

I still call it "magic e", I don't want the Chinese primary students glazing over too much. :)

And they've all seen Cbeebies Alphablocks as well. :thumbsupdroid:

It should be arriving later today, I am getting an antenna for my TV. Cable bill went up again so yeah, we'll see what I can watch without their help. Jerks. I meant to do it when I got my new TV but totally forgot. Hate it when that happens!
We cut the cord a long time ago, now we stream and watch local tv with the antenna. Much better

We did that for over a year 2013-2014 (course I had a TV antennae the size of a volvo left over from the 70's already hung from my chimney) we got about 23 channels including HD broadcasts locally and even a couple broadcast from Mexico. Yea you don't need a fancy schmancy special antennae to get digital signals, just a converter to take the signal from the antennae to your TV (coverts the dual wires to coax). I think you'll be surprised by not only what you can get but the quality of the HD signal and picture quality. In our case the antennae gave us better signal on the big 4 channels (ABC, CBS, NBC & FOX) than we got on Time Warner. Enjoy your freedom from the cable overlords. ;)

I only get the starter TV from TWC for local stuff. I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, MLB and NHL and use them with my Roku (more options there too) so am never at a loss for things to watch. When I had my old TV I didn't bother with an antenna/converter box because I knew I would eventually get a new TV and then promptly forgot to get the antenna as planned. That was in January so it's not been that long. Besides, it's good to test it out now during full foliage, I live pretty close to the transmitters but sort of in a dip. Can't wait to hook it up and see how it works...then kiss TWC goodbye (well, for TV anyway).

Well. It didn't work but it was a cheap one, maybe if I hung it from the ceiling it might have. Just wasn't pulling the stations I need (ABC, NBC & CBS) in clearly, no matter where I put it. Grrrr. Good news is that Amazon is refunding me and I don't have to send it back so that's nice!

Here's a useful site that can help you determine your over-the-air reception options and antenna requirements for your specific location-
http://www.antennaweb.org/
It's possible you'll need a better antenna than the one you tried, getting good reception of the digital TV signals can be tricky. I'm in the metro NYC area and I still need an amplified antenna to reliably receive all of the local networks.

Thanks! I did check there, I got a 30 mile antenna and am only about 13 miles away from the transmitters. But I'm in a teeny valley, I think that's going to be my problem. Not going all out and sticking it to my window or getting a roof one, if a small one can't do it I'll stick with cable. I'll try a few more and see if I can get one to work.
