Help Potentially dangerous heat problem.

I've just downloaded 3 games from gameloft website. Once downloaded you then need to download three files equating to about 300 meg.
I set these off downloading via wifi connection and went to make a brew..

The phone rang, so I asked my 6 year old to answer and bring me my phone..she picked it up and screamed, dropped my phone.. I ran to her to see her holding her hand to her left ear.she told me that the phone had burnt her ear.

I picked the phone up and noticed the top left (as you look at it, by the front facing camera) was unbelievably hot..so hot I couldn't touch it.

long story short, I stopped the downloads and the phone cooled down. This has to be a design Issue and a dangerous one at that too.

Not impressed..I've had no issues with the phone before with heat, so clearly its a wifi issue

Sorry to hear about your 6 year old. to be fair i dont think its a wifi issue, i have my wifi on all day and its never hot. but when i play games it does to very warm, its never been to hot to touch for me. but the screen does get warm aswell which i think is very bad. yh i believe its a design fault adn where u descriebed is where i think the dual processors are so they are heating up really bad :(

Never heard of that before, anywhere! I'd send samsung an email explaining the burn and certainly get a replacement. That's really odd. Must be a faulty component on you individual device.

It wasn't playing games it was just downloading them, so it's may be a processor issue as you rightly point out.

I really don't fancy going through all the set up procedures again, this is already my second s2 handset..

Are there any ways to completely back up your handset settings etc?

I've heard something about Titanium backup. Think it'll backup everything if you want it to.

mybackup will do the job with the device rooted or not :)
 
Mine never gets hot even with gaming. It used to get really warm, but after updating the firmware it now stays cool. Getting that hot is not normal-sounds defective
 
Mine gets really hot when playing some games and sometimes when it's downloading stuff. I mean hot, not burning.

No need to be rude.

As for others not experiencing the problem, this could be a hardware defect specific to the OP's phone. I would recommend taking it back to the store and try getting an exchange.

Thanks for the defence.some people really need to grow up.

A quick update..took the advise of a persons recommendation to overall mybackup..then took the phone back to store to change. Got the new phone and then restored using mybackup.. All seems well..

Is this normal that my S2 gets hot just when it's charging?
I'm not using it, it's off, just plugged in, and it's getting hotter and hotter. It's been charging for a couple of hours now. I had it last night, so I didn't download anything yet... Anything I need to do? I'm new to Android, so I have no idea about updates, back up and all that.

Your device will get "warm" when it charges the battery. When new it will need more charging and more warm. This normal.

Until the updates are available for everyone. I would only download software one at a time giving the phone time to cool. The CPU will get warm but if hot then Samsung will have to fix it with new software.

Just use some common sense and keep track of how warm your phone it getting while setting it up.
 
Yesterday evening my S2 got so hot that, if I hadn't picked it up and realised what was happening, I'm fairly sure that it could have burst into flames. It was on the edge of my desk and just underneath a curtain, which would have caught fire very easily and the entire house would then have gone up in flames and our lives with it.

I have contacted Samsung in the U.K. who were very courteous and thanked me for bringing this to their attention, so we shall see if anything develops.

This is what happened: I downloaded some short videos from YouTube and plugged in my S2 to my PC using the USB cable. I dragged two videos (one at a time) from my PC onto the SD card.

They opened perfectly when I played them and all was good. I then got lazy and highlighted five videos and dragged them across en bloc. They appeared to copy across OK but when I opened Gallery I found five empty rectangles with no image displayed.

I tapped one of the rectangles and the video screen opened but was blank and it froze the S2. I tried one more with the same result.

I then had to do something else so I plugged in the S2's charging cable and did my jobs. A little later I happened to pick up the S2 and it was alarmingly hot, and I mean hot! I immediately removed the battery but it was cool, so the problem was obviously with the CPU or some other part of the operating system. I can only assume that the CPU was blowing its mind trying to open the dodgy video files as the main source of heat was at the top of the unit.

It is now perfectly OK and doesn't appear to have suffered any ill effects but what might have happened if I hadn't been there to check it?

I accept that this was triggered by an unusual set of circumstances that most people may never experience, but it is still very worrying.

I'm no techie but I'd welcome any comments from those of you who are.

Just got mine yesterday via Orange UK. Almost instantly after playing a 10 minute round of Angry birds the damn thing feels like a hot iron in my hands. Now with the kind of technology inside of these things now I can expect a little heat around 40+ degrees Celsius but jesus H Christ this thing is on fire! Almost like OPs. I have complained or should I say at least brought it to the attention of Orange who seemed surprised and hadn't heard of the problem until I suggested a mere Google search. The net is flooded with threads about this.

I'm getting sent a replacement tomorrow but I fear this will be ongoing until Samsung have a real answer. A real shame because it's a real nice bit of kit. shame it thinks it's a furnace.
 
I have never had any heating issues at all with my phone. Occasionally, if it is on charge and I am playing angry birds, it will get warm, but never too hot.

Gives me hope that there is just a dodgy batch going around. I'll report tomorrow when my new phone arrives.
 
My experiences ,

New GS2 received from Orange UK yesterday, Fiddled with it in the evening (the phone you dirty gets) and left to discharge and recharged fully over night. Got to work in the morning and decided to get stuck in to setting the phone up , adding contacts , downloading a few apps etc.
the phone kept warm throughout untill I found the task manager and exited all apps running in the background. Now I decided to run a couple games so naturally I booted up angry birds and followed by some random vector HD pac man clone. The phone very quickly got so hot around the top half that I had to put it down to cool . It didnt burn but was extremely uncomfortable. I held it to my ear and it was a completely unacceptable temperature. I rang Orange UK right away and the guy from tech was surprised as he hadn't heard of the issue before . I pointed him to a quick Google search and he apologized and agreed it was totally unacceptable and arranged a replacement to arrive tomorrow morning.
As I've stated in other posts Im hoping it was just a case of a bad batch as not everyone is complaining of this issue but on the flip side a hell of a lot of people are. One post I had read mentions a post on a Norwegian forum claiming Samsung recognize the issue and are working on it right away. Will report tomorrow when the new handset arrives.
 
I am also facing the same issue. When i download some thing it doesn't get hot but if i play game like cricket or angry bird it gets hot tremendously. i have spoke to the tech team of Samsung-India . they informed me that the dual core processoris placed on the above of the battery . so it was quite naturally for them. hoe ever i'm too scared as now days i'm afraid to play games.

If some update in software or firmware make this problem cool then please suggest me.I'm not aware of rooting of the ph.it was still in factory setting .
