Help Power button sticking

YankeeDudeL

Android Expert
I guess flashing a hundred diff ROMs has finally started to take it's toll on my Droid. Now my power button is sticking. Can anyone think of a way I can fix this myself? Or am I going to have to go to Verizon? I def don't want a new Droid, I'm quite content with what I have. That is, until the Bionic drops.

You can download NoLock from the market, it allows you to unlock your phone without pressing the power button. I downloaded this app as soon as I got my Droid because I didn't want to wear the power button out.

I've unstuck buttons on various devices using a lot of rubbing alcohol swabbed and forced into the area. Alcohol wipes and/or soaked into cotton swabs or even just cotton balls.

It evaporates and sometimes takes a lot of residue out.. what it can't do of course is repair worn hardware contacts and the rocker itself, but if residue is the problem it'll do the trick.

Worth a try. ;)

I think I'll give both of these a try. Thanks for your input. Anyone else with ideas, keep em coming. I'm sure a lot of us older Droid owners and flashaholics will start seeing issues..

My phone just did this about 3 weeks ago. I don't have verizon insurance so I called motorola and my phone was still covered under warranty till mid February (even though I bought it in November of 09). I had another verizon phone that I used while I sent it to them and they repaired it for me for free. Make a backup of your phone because they wipe it back to stock, I had to reroot and shoot my image back. Funny thing is my wife's phone is doing the same think now so I have to send her phone off now too. Wouldn't be surprised if this starts happening to a lot of phones, seems like a design flaw. I was told if my phone was out of warranty it would of cost me $75 to repair which is not bad all things considered.

Good suggestion - who knows what people have on their fingers when they press the button down?

This happened to me with 1 week remaining on my Verizon warranty. They FedExed me a reconditioned Droid in 1 day with a box to mail in my old Droid. All is good now.

Mine has lost its spring ability but the button still works...For some reason when I stretch my finger over the top to power the screen on I mash it way too hard...thats probably why its worn out.

@yankee, my droid does the same thing, what ive done is installed quick boot and set up a widget so I can just boot to recovery from the homescreen. I havent really had much luck other than that, ive just gotten used to it and almost like it more than my droid with an unstuck power key.

Add me to the list of stuck power buttons. It still works but it's sunk in and I have to press it pretty hard to get it to work.

It's funny, being a fellow flashoholic, I haven't had the issue. However, my fiances Droid (bought the same day as myself back in Nov 09), has the sticky power button. The only good part is I can tell which phone is mine without having to turn it on

Another one here....no spring to the button for the last few weeks. It works but has to be pressed hard. Mine was purchsed the day they were introduced.

My button started to stick about a week ago. I tried the alcohol method, but it didn't help much. Brought it in, and because I have insurance, my warranty was extended to two years and I got a refurb that works swimmingly right then and there.

Glad to hear mine isn't the only one without a spring back feature anymore. It happened all of a sudden. I might contact Motorola and see if that return policy is still in effect. I got mine the day it came out. Not looking forward to re-rooting, though.

Same here... Happened about 2 weeks ago. It seems to work and then stops. Sometime I hit the power button and get the "airplan/power off" question.

It feels like it is software problem and not button, but might be wrong. My Droid is getting really slow these days just trying to dial or go back to home screen. Should try to warranty.

@Carrot - this is definitely a hardware problem.

Warranty will not do anything to fix your issues. You should try uninstalling some apps.
