Root Previously Rooted EVO 4G

Newron

Lurker
I'm pretty ignorant about all this stuff, so please forgive me if I'm redundant.

I have an EVO 4G that I had rooted for me (David with Android Monsters in Austin, TX... currently he's unavailable). Here's the current info on my phone:
Model # PG06100
MEID A10000017D322EB
Phone #: 0000001308
IMSI 310000000001308

Android Version: 2.3.3
HTC Sence Version: 2.1
Software #: Dominus Sigma 4.2
Kernal Version: 2.635.10-g4e39384
htc-kernal@and18-2 #1
Baseband version: 2.15.00.05.02
Build #: Ginger-AleV4 ro.build.changelist=V4
Browser version: WebKit \ 533.1
PRI version: 2.15_003
PRL version: 606.81

Here's my problem... I needed to switch phone numbers between this and another phone on my plan. But Sprint couldn't successfully transfer the number to my rooted EVO. That's a problem for me because this is my business phone, and I really need it.

Also, I tried to save some internal memory by moving some apps to SD card with Titanium Backup and consequently lost my calendar. Now I can't sync with Google calendar online - which I really want to do for my business.

So, I'd like to start over, but I'm afraid of losing the ability to root again (read something about that somewhere).

I made a backup of all my stuff, but how does one backup only SMS, contacts, etc without replacing everything? My Backup doesn't seem to segregate anything.

So, can I erase my current ROM and start over? Do I have to re-root or something?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

ok so to get you to switch over i would make a nandroid backup of your rom and then try a stock rom:
Download 651 Rooted Odexed Signed zip

make sure that you wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data. then flash the rom.

and as far as you backups, for one your contacts should be synced with google that way all you will have to do is sync it with google after you sign back in. and you sms can be pushed to the card, most sms apps can do that as well. and i would also recommend that you use titanium backup to backup your apps and data.

no need to unroot or re-root. just flash the stock rom and you should be good to go. but i would read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. to get more familiar with the rooted world. there is a ton of info to help you out.

any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Can't tell you how that helps to set me at ease. I'll follow each step. Thanks again!

read the after rooting section. there is no need to run revolutionary. sorry i hope i made that clear. the life after root is what you want to read.

and again any questions please feel free to ask it.

Thanks to both of you. I've been spending a lot of time reading through the information here, and its beginning to sink in. Feeling more confident.

Have a great weekend!

well we will be here over the weekend if you have any questions. once you understand it all, it becomes quite easy. i know the info can be overwhelming, but that is why you have us here on AF for:D

I spent most of the night working on it. There is a ton of information here! But it does become understandable with a little OTJ training. I'm a hands on learner.

It took me a while to learn how to boot into revolutionary. On my phone I had to select restart and then the options appeared to boot into it.

I also had to switch recoveries to use edify, which I learned how to do in the guide. VERY EXCELLENT information.

After about 5 hours I was familiar enough to work my way around pretty well. But I'm probably a slow learner.

All of this information is great.

At some point, I also want to partition and move apps to SD with the info in the guide to save my internal memory.

I probably need to switch kernals, as my battery is running real hot again.

MEGA THANKS to everyone here for setting me on the right path and giving everyone the tools to learn this on our own.

no worries. like i said this forum is awesome(one of a kind)!

i would recommend that if you partition your card that you get a higher class card as well.

also when does your battery get hot? just randomly or when you are using your phone?

My battery was getting hot while I was using it, but it seems to be fine now. It is lasting longer too. I remember reading now that I should let it settle in for a couple of days.

I am stuck now on how to boot into recovery to make a nandroid backup. The restart screen on this sense rom doesn't offer those boot options like before.

Pressing the - volume button with the power button doesn't do it, and neither does pressing the + volume button with power.

make sure that fastboot is unchecked. go to settings and depending on the rom go to power (or applications, if there is no power option)/uncheck fastboot. now you should be able to power off then press and hold power+vol down.

also when you hold the power button a window should pop up select restart and you should get a list of restart to bootloader, recovery, hot restart, or power off (i think). most roms have these options, but if not then the power+vol down should work.

Go to settings/apps or settings/power depending wich rom you are on and uncheck fastboot. or you can just pull the battery and put it back in and hold power and volume down.
