Root problems in the installing ROM process

ok firewall and av fully turned off uninstalled drivers and sync and reinstalled with firewall n av fully off on vista and as soon as i get to waiting for bootloader in update tool it cuts me off sync and bootloader comes up again with

hero cut ship s-on etcetc as i put a few posts ago and i cant press nothing

so i asked my neighbour if i could use his xp machine and guess what .... exactly the same thing lol

I'm gonna try to extract the rom.zip from the official RUU, which, fingers crossed, you can flash from that white screen.

lol i have just tried another thing too, i found an article about syncing problems with win7 and what i had to do was download a older version of sync and manually install drivers . i know it was win 7 problem but i thought what the heck nothing else has worked i'll give this a go even tho im on vista .... did not work lol so took drivers and sync off com and reinstalled normal ones lol

Right, so I figured out how to find the rom.zip.

Run the RUU file you downloaded, let it start up and click next on the first screen.

Then (assuming you're on vista/7) navigate to:

'C:\Users\Your windows username\AppData\Local\Temp\'

Then type rom.zip in the search box and the file you want should pop up.

Stick that onto the root of your sdcard, rename it update.zip and you should be able to flash it from that menu.

You can boot into the recovery menu by switching it off, then hold home + power to switch it back on.

EDIT: Oh you might not be able to see the appdata folder by default, you need to turn on the option to view hidden files.

EDIT2: I'm not sure which menu gives you the option to flash an update.zip. It's either the recovery menu (boot using home + power) or the fastboot screen (boot using back + power).

there is no rom.zip there lol

that rom that i downloaded other day the 1.76 one, can i not put it in compressed zip folder rename it to update.zip put it on root and try do it that way then home+power then update that way

its recovery menu that shows update.zip

Nah you see the ruu.exe contains a lot of extra files, not just the rom.zip. The only way to get it out, that I can find, is to run the program.

Did you leave the RUU.exe running whilst you tried to find the file? It gets deleted as soon as you close it.

Want me to upload it to megaupload for you? (May take a while).

i clicked run on it then when it started i got the please read view me and click next so i clicked next then i went to appdata local temp clicked in search box and it didnt come up so i looked through manually and couldnt find it , with the ruu still running

if you wouldnt mind and you think it will help that would be gr8 thanks

Ok. I've never uploaded to megaupload before (and I get a really slow upload speed of Vigrin Media :P), so I don't know how long this is going to take.

mega upload is good i use that and mediafire all the time ....

i been trying for atl;east 3 days im sure i can wait lol

thanks xyro much appreciated

I don't get it.... I'm trying to upload it but it ends after a few seconds and says it's completed.

Might try mediafire in stead.

50% apparently :)

The mediafire window says 0% still, but a little box at the bottom of the browser says 50%

thankls alot m8 whats the quote bit about .

you're a legend

ok so once downloaded put it on sd not in a folder rename update.zip unplug phone turn off hold home +power and then select update ....

i should use the wipe option 1st right

Well, I think it will wipe your phone anyway. This is essentially a normal firmware install, but with the PC taken out of the equation, and those updates always wipe the phone. It's probably not a bad idea to wipe anyway.

Make sure you have everything you want to keep backed up :)

yeah thanks . i waiting for the download to finish my connection tonight is like waiting for a bus .... takes twice as long as its supposed to .

i only got a few apps on phone as not had it a week yet so i will just go on market and get them again ... sod the back up lol this has taken long enough without doing summin else

thanks for uploading to mediafire

will let ya know the outcome within half hr lol

lol right im on recovery and lol

it says android recovery utility

use trackball to highlight
click to select

reboot system now [home+back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [alt+s]
wipe data/factory reset [alt+w]

and right at the bottom it says E:cant open /cache/recovery/command

i tried clicking on apply sd update.zip nothing happens , also tried clicking on wipe nothing happens lol

also there is a big white triangle with a yellow ! next to a phone in the middle of the screen

I had a google and this seems to be a common error. A few things that got recommended in the stuff I read were to check the download wasn't corrupt and try doing a factory reset + SD card wipe before you booted to recovery.

I'd check for corruption before you go wiping the phone. Download md5sums-1.2.zip, extract the .exe and then drag and drop the rom.zip onto the md5sums.exe. If it's not identical to this one it's been corrupted during the download:

2323fcf789def60d2bdb2cd3c127c426

The triangle and ! are normal.

We can do this! :P

it identical lol so what now lol

i bet im the only person who's had this amount of trouble lol

its making me chuckle

I'm following this heroic (!) effort and willing you on.

If it's any consolation, I've just boot-looped my handset restoring a previous ROM from nandroid whilst troubleshooting the "ghost headset" issue, and then had to restore my current setup from the adb shell 'cos the recovery app barfed. Looks like I've got a corrupt file in it somewhere as the restored system has apps installed that definitely weren't when I made the backup! On the bright side. I've fixed the headset problem. Dunno how though....

slug you should travel down to berkshire and do my phone for me lol ,

i got plenty of stella in the fridge and a few bottles of glenfiddich i'll invite ppl round and have a party when its done lol

Sounds like you're having a fun day then Slug :p

I really don't know what to suggest. See, I've never done the update.zip method before or had to fight with HTC sync.... Fortunately my pc cooperated with me that day. So I don't have first hand experience of those things.

We need someone else's input here, someone who's done either of those two things.

I suppose it's possible the goldcard didn't work? I don't know specifically what that error message means.

shall i do a hard reset and then with nothing on phone apart from update zip on card try recovery update.zip method
