Root problems in the installing ROM process

yeah nad now its saying is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file lol

The command wont let me do anything to to with what i just downloaded it saying there is nothing there

in the folder adb application is 1st

Which command, "dir"? That's a basic Windows command. Look in the C:\sdk\tools folder using Explorer and check that adb.exe and AdbWin*.dll are there.

adbwinapi.dll 94kb
and
adb.exe is the 566kb file right which is the application

it does not says adb.exe anywhere

That's probably because you have known extensions hidden (the default). Nothing to worry about....

I wonder... try closing the command prompt, then right-click on it in Accessories and select "Run as Administrator", then change folder to C:\sdk\tools. Does that work?

no nothing still saying about that internal external thing

shall i get the sledge hammer out

Maybe a screenie will help. This is what you should see when you run a dir command in the C:\sdk\tools folder.

ok i will try that again if it dont work the whiskey is coming out ..

ok tried again and guess what .......... internal external etc etc lol

HeroRootPack.zip YOU MUST extract it to C:/HeroRoot
Step 1 – Flashing the Recovery

  1. On your phone, enable USB debugging in Settings > Applications > Development
  2. Open a command prompt (Search for cmd or Start > Run then type cmd.exe)
  3. Type cd / then hit enter and type cd HeroRoot and hit enter
  4. Now type runindos.bat and hit enter
  5. Note: (If you use linux or Mac, replace adb in the zip with the correct version, and then download this shell script: runinlinuxadb.sh and execute it as normal. Rest will be same as in windows.)
  6. The script is now doing it’s stuff. You should see some text in the command prompt.
  7. Your phone will reboot a couple of times and eventually reboot into recovery mode.
Step 2 – Flashing a Custom ROM

  1. In recovery, use the trackball to scroll down to Backup/Restore and select it.
  2. Then, select Nand Backup and press home to start it. (TIP: If you need to restore at some point, Use Nand Restore)
  3. When that’s done, you need to download a ROM! There are loads on XDA Developers. I recommend VillainRom 12.
  4. In recovery, select USB-MS toggle and transfer the ROM you downloaded to the root of your SD Card. (ie Not in any folders)
  5. When that’s done, press home in recovery to disable USB storage.
  6. Then, go to Wipe in recovery and select Wipe data/factory reset
  7. After that, it’s time to flash your ROM! In recovery select Flash zip from sdcard and select the ROM you downloaded.
  8. When that’s done, select Reboot system now and bow down to your phone as it reveals it’s rooted goodness

(First boot will take a while)
  9. When it’s booted, You’re done! Enjoy Root!

shall i try that lol

I have to admit I'm stumped right now. I can't think of any logical reason why you can open a command prompt (cmd.exe) but not run an internal command like dir.

I'm going to have to call it anyway and go to bed as I've got to be up sharp in the morning. If anything comes to me in a dream I'll update you when I wake up. Atm I'm completely baffled....

lol thanks for ya help . i have come to the point that im just gonna try everything i find lol

cheers m8

i think its time to give up . i will wait for my call from htc and see wether they think my recovery is not how its supposed to be .. which i think that its knackered otherwise i would be able to see nandroid back up davlik etcetc and not just update.zip and wipe and reboot and not be able to click on any of em if they say its knackered 3 will be getting a call a replacement and i will make them check that everything is working

Those options aren't available with the stock recovery image, though. They only appear when you have a custom recovery image flashed to the handset.

See this post from nedamdam - it might be worth a shot? I think you'll also need ROM Manager to load a custom recovery (as well as a ROM if desired) but from reading this thread it appears to work on the GSM Hero. Best check again though, as I'm just back in from the vets and will have to rush off to work pretty soon.

afternoon slug and xyro ok i just downloaded that universal androot sent to sd card opened linda manger installed to phone and clicked superuser access for android 1.5/1.6.

i clicked yes and here is what it said after 30secs

woot! your device is rooted
gernerating exploit [ok]
generating su [ok]
generating superuser apk [ok]
generating rootscript [ok]

i have not continued with the rest of the thread yet as i remember seeing somewhere that getting rid of the stocks will bugger up the phone . i did how ever download and install rom manager and clicked the flash clockworkmod recovery and selected gsm hero and it came up with an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!

so thought i would stop and get some of your gr8 advice

thanks adz aka adam

another thing i was reading that forum and it says somewhere that it does not unlock the bootloader , just wondering this , if my bootloader is locked is that a reason why when update tool says waiting for bootloader it cuts off should my bootloader be unlocked ? probably stupid question lol

also i installed titanium backup and it says sorry i could not aquire root privileges. this application will NOT work . please verify your ROM is rooted and includes busybox, it had option to download busybox so i did and tried again , it said the same thing

im still unable to click on anything in recovery menu it still say E; cant open cache recovery command.... has that got anything to do with clockworkmod saying about commands in some way ?

is there anything like omnius for the htc

Evening!

Sounds as if the root didn't work. Try running AndRoot again and see if it works. The stuff about the locked bootloader only applies to the Nexus One afaik.

If you still have the ROM.ZIP from the RUU update I found this thread on xda-dev that may help. Note the rename of the file.

uninstalled androot and then installed again same error msg . i still have the rom zip i will look at link at report back

so does that mean i should go htc site and do a fresh install of the 3 stock ROM.

dont worry about this msg i didnt read proper i will change to hero

Hey guys :)

I think an unlocked bootloader is one that will flash files not signed by HTC.

Flashboot mode sounds interesting. I hadn't heard of that one until now.

Slug means the rom.zip I sent you :)

EDIT: Ah, I had seen flashboot before. You can get to it via fastboot.

When I run flashboot it seems to scan my SD card for .img files. So that sounds like it could work slug.

Unable to click anything in fast boot ] says open file then failed messages

oh surprise surprise htc didnt call me back wither so they could throw in their 2 pence worth

What happens if you take that rom.zip you downloaded, stick it on the root of the sdcard and rename it to 'HEROIMG.zip' and then boot into flashboot mode?

You can enter flashboot by either:
-Holding volume down and power to boot
-Holding back and power to boot and then pressing volume down.

EDIT: I was surprised you got as much help as you did from HTC to be honest; you did tell them you were tyring to root it :P
